NIGHTLOCK Hacked in seconds! (and how to make it un-hackable)

  • In this video we demonstrate that the NIGHTLOCK original door brace has a weakness that can easily be remedied. The device can withstand force applied from someone trying to force the door open, but if attacked from the side with almost no effort the device can be rendered ineffective. We show a simple solution to this problem by just drilling a hole and using a nail to hold the barricade to the support brace. With this modification the device cannot be hacked from the side as easily. I did not set out to find any flaws in this device, but after buying it I thought I would run a few tests before drilling into my tile floor and I noticed this flaw. Hopefully NightLock adds a mechanism such as the one I describe here to their devices so you won't need to spend the time and modify yours.

    1. They’d have to know it’s a nightlock blocking the door to use this hack.
    2. If they used this hack, it’s likely that someone you previously let in your home opened your door because they did their homework on your home.
    3. If you use a nightlock on all your doors, inserting a screw in them ensures screw yourself over if you lock yourself out. Some people exit their home via garage door and their garage opener fails for X reason.
    3. Every man made lock can be conquered no matter what you do.

It seems the three most popular things are reinforced door jambs, a bar that acts as a wedge between the door knob and the ground, and this nightlock style type of barricade. If the door is kicked and all the resistance is at the bottom it would probably be obvious that it is the nightlock style barricade to someone who knows what they're doing. I agree the screw solution that I mentioned wouldn't be good if you think you're going to need to enter through that door as a backup if you get locked out of your house. Well you can always cut the bottom of the door off with a sawzall :) Where there is a will there is a way.

      @@goodlifehacker NOPE!
A door jamb lock would be breached. It was already tested and showed how easy it was to break thru.

We have to remember that devices like these time none of them are full. if you combined this with other types of security implementations, it may help to further strengthen your security. But as you mentioned, not a single man-made item will ever be full proof.

They should revise it and do something similar to this where you can prevent it from being slid off

@@goodlifehacker I have to agree with you on this one. This thing has been out for way too long for them to have not solved a problem this easily noticeable from a logical standpoint before it even left the factory.

Someone would have to know the night lock is there and most won’t … they will start kicking mabey break the deadbolt or door jam … and by that time make ALOT of noise … if they defeat the nightlock … I’m already waiting for them to come in with a gun trained at the door…

Good tip to make a good product better. And many burglaries are "inside jobs" so it is totally possible the crook knows about the Nightlock.

To prevent that hack, simply drill a hole through the security locking plate down into the base plate and insert a nail the plate will not slide out. If really ambitious make a spring loaded locking pin.

I'm sure you can do better than that! It's a tiny hole. It may be dark. You're just not envisioning many scenarios. At least you identified the main problem though. How about some sort of spring loaded pin? Something easy to pull up to unlock and slide to the side. But really this device is poorly thought out. Way too much hassle to use 365 times a year or more if you are in and out. Also it should support the door higher up. If your door bends it can easily be levered open. The best lock every made was the NY Police lock as it supported the middle of the door at about a 45 degree angle. Smart when you use physics properly.

I have ESP :) I think if someone is having trouble kicking a door there are three main possibilities of preventative measures that people might be using these days. A door bar that wedges under the handle and rests diagonally on the floor, reinforced steel door jambs, or a nightlock type of device. This one would be a bit obvious since the bottom of the door would be where all the resistance is. The video is just to show that there is a quick and easy way to make this device more secure.

How about a remote controlled device so it can be used when you leave? You just better have another way in in case it malfunctions.

Hi yes for the purposes of the video I just taped the base down without giving too much thought to the positioning, but you are correct that closer to the edge where the door opens would probably be better. This vulnerability would still exist though.

then someone breaking the door window can lean down with a stick and move it out of the way. The nail modification is very difficult to remove from anyone putting their arm thru the door window, using a stick.

Hi and thank you for commenting. I think you might be referring to the LockDown 1 model? I just had a look and I bet that red aluminum wedge can be cut through quickly with a thin bimetal blade. I don't have one to try it on. Also I wouldn't want to make a giant hole in my floor which that model requires.
