  • Let's take a hike around Indian Lake State Forest located in Marion County, Florida. The area is rich in history and very scenic. You can many trails to roam and relax by the lake as well. Indian Lake State Forest is approximately 4,568 acres of gently rolling sandhills and pastures just north of historic Silver Springs in Marion County. The forest is named after Indian Lake, a deep sinkhole lake that drains into the aquifer. Indian Lake State Forest is just a few miles from the heart of Ocala. Recreational opportunities in the forest include hiking, bird-watching and horseback riding. There is camping as well see the forest links posted to learn more. Some of the history on the area: Before Ocala and Silver Springs were developed, there were Indians that lived in this area. The Indians loved the lake and the area around it. They held their Pow-wows near the lake and their children loved to swim in the warm waters of Indian Lake. The Indians held sacred rites for their dead and buried them in sacred areas throughout the forest. Later American settlers moved into the area and forced out the Indians. The settlers, who like the Indians, loved Indian lake and the surrounding area. Around 1845 the settlers built a small whitewashed church near the lake and around 1851 they established this small cemetery known as Indian Lake Cemetery. This cemetery includes some veterans from the war of 1812 and Civil War as well as some of the first settlers in the area. During the 1800's and early 1900's there was also turpentine operations in the area. So besides enjoying the beautiful nature here it's amazing to discover and learn about the history as well.

Watched this on Tv CZcams channel and rewatching. It’s such a pleasure watching you out on your hikes. Indeed it’s been a dry go of it lately. But others have wildfire smoke and flooding, Mother Nature deals all kinds of weather out for sure.
I was looking on Facebook at a sight called Old Photos.
A picture of a few lady’s eating lunch in a cemetery back before all the rest areas were built, now a lot are being shut down.
Long live History with exploring , learning and sharing. Thank you so much for sharing this. I was born in Highlands County and did not know about this place.

Physically, the Native Americans are gone, replaced by mostly disconnected (from the natural world) modern humans.
However, the Native Americans are still here spiritually. Those who are connected (to the natural world) can feel their presence all throughout this area.
Great video of a place I love to roam when I seek to escape this toxic and poisonous man-made lifestyle that most of us live.

Have you ever been the Prairie Creek Conservation Cemetery? It’s a lovely place with beautiful meadows and shady hammock areas. Several well-marked trails are there.

Relative to eternity, humans really have nothing to boast about over the fireflies of summer. Centuries hence, future Floridians may stop and contemplate the headstones of you, or me, or FTB as we repose under the Florida sand, and wonder about our lives and times. 🤔🧐🤔🌴🌅🌄
