  • This one is for Boba Defett, as requested - reviewing the German battleship who can't make up her mind what she's going to be when she's grown up, the Gneisenau.

    Really good run through on this ship. I could not put 2 wins together but started playing again after watching the video. Rushing the flank works better in this ship.

    The primary 380 mm guns are powerful at short range. I hit a Colorado's citadel twice at the range of 6 km.

    Fun fact: In real life, Gneisenau had the same guns and turrets as Scharnhorst, being her sister and all. She was classified as a battlecruiser by the germans for her high top speed and low reload time.
    She is my 2nd favorite ship, but i do wish wargaming would show her the same respect they showed her sister Scharnhorst. Those guns give her a great disadvantage in the damage department.

    • @FunandGameswithTerry
      @FunandGameswithTerry  Před 4 lety +3

      She had the same 283mm mains, but the Germans had plans to upgun her to the 380s - they just never got around to it. So it's at least not completely fictional (like a certain tier 7 German heavy cruiser). The Germans called her class "small battleships", the British went with "battlecruiser" - but really the same thing.
      WG has buffed her a couple of times since I made that video, I think better reload on the mains and better turn time. I build my higher-tier German BBs around secondaries, and bow-in, she has the same firepower as the Bismarck :) But for me, it's all in the speed and brawling.

    I felt the same when I got the Gneisenau - it was a real struggle figuring out how to play it after the Bayern. But by the time I grinded my way to the Bismarck, I was pretty much playing it the same way, although I chose a few different buffs. Time to go back and make some changes.

    It was originally designed for the 380mm/15”. However they needed the ship fast, they didn’t have the 380mm guns ready so they put the 280/11” guns on with intent to refit. Sometime after Cerberus she was damaged and sent to Kiel for repair and refit with the 380mm. However the tirpitz was sunk and Hitler threw a fit and ordered the surface fleet scrapped for U-boats. Raeder eventually got Hitler to relent and saved the Scharnhorst however it was too late for the Gneisenau.

    I have tried both the Gneisenau and the Scharnhorst, and I have to admit I prefer the latter. I find the extra barrels and faster reload works better for me - also against cruisers as the 283mm shells are less prone to overpens than the 380mm ones. In t8 battles you just have to focus on destroyers and cruisers, t8 battleships can be a bit painful unless you get up close and can hit their broadside.
    I equipped my Scharnhorst to maximise main battery turret traverse speed and traverse acceleration for maximum manoeuvrability. Incidentally, I use the Tirpitz with the same equipment, while the Bismarck I play more like a traditional battleship with main battery dispersion reduction, fire protection and torpedo damage reduction.

    • @FunandGameswithTerry
      @FunandGameswithTerry  Před 2 lety

      I have both, and yes, Scharnhorst is an incredible ship for random battles. Can take on anything. But for those who don't have the premium, her sister isn't a terrible alternative.

    • @FunandGameswithTerry
      @FunandGameswithTerry  Před 4 lety

      The Gneisenau is ... special. Also note that she's been buffed since that video. I tend to play her like I would an aggressive cruiser, e.g. Yorck or Hipper. Definitely not super useful at long range, but can be a devastating brawler.
      As for torps, they're actually very useful at keeping DDs at bay, just by their existence - a DD knows you have them, so they'll have to be much more careful in their approach. The three-weapon-cycle takes some getting used to.

    • @FunandGameswithTerry
      @FunandGameswithTerry  Před 5 lety +1

      Thanks, much appreciated! From memory, there has been a buff on the reload time for German BBs a while ago, to compensate for the lower number of guns, but I'm not sure if that was before or after the video. Here are the patch notes: facebook.com/notes/world-of-warships-blitz/update-111-patch-notes/1935294763184842/
      In one of the later patches, the tier 9 and 10 German BBs have been buffed again, but AFAIR that's it for the Gneisenau.

    • @FunandGameswithTerry
      @FunandGameswithTerry  Před 5 lety

      Lol no worries, we're all just sofa sailors :) I'd say I'm a light cruiser main - I do enjoy mid-tier DDs, but have some practice to do in upper tiers. I've learned a lot grinding up the USN cruiser line, so I can play those quite successfully as well (had to get used to not having torps). I do enjoy BBs, but most battles these days are BB and DD heavy, and BB play can be a bit static (unless you play the German brawlers). I'm pretty terrible at CVs :)
      I do like playing aggressively, and light cruisers are kind of the perfect balance - almost the same torpedo power, and much better guns to entertain myself while they reload. For a long time, the Nürnberg has been my goto ship, but in higher tiers, I tend to play Minotaur & Mogami a lot. The De Grasse is another excellent ship, unfortunately, they switch to heavy cruisers at tier 7 of the French line, but probably still worth it.
      When it comes to BBs, the Tirpitz is my favourite OP monster, but I've got some IJN BBs as well. Haven't done anything on the USN BB line, and the Bismarck just feels like a nerfed Tirpitz at tier 8, so I haven't followed that up further as well.

    • @someguy3276
      @someguy3276 Před 3 lety

      @Your local doujindealer that's not how those suicide bombers DD works in a match because they might as well appear from behind some island with head facing your broadside get very close to you almost point blank then turn and torpedo you then and if you manage to survive the attack then you need to kill it before it turn to other side and torpedo you again and the worst part your main and secondary guns are useless because DD is not showing broadside and when DD does show the broadside you are too close to it to actually hit it but that tactic won't work on this BB because DD will just get torpedoed at point blank.

    • @someguy3276
      @someguy3276 Před 3 lety

      @Your local doujindealer well good for you I guess I am just unlucky to go down that way in every 5th battle when I didn't have this ship.
      I never said need to be one with the island but the just close enough to hit it with secondaries and you may see a destroyer head facing your broadside coming towards you which is annoying since you can't really sink it if it had even half it'd health but not with this ship since you have torpedoes just launch it before DD does.
