Today on HTV, Pr. Borghardt talks about making the sign of the holy cross. He shares the gift in making the sign of the cross in the morning and evening as the catechism teaches, in the divine service and whenever you remember your baptism.
If you have questions or topics that you'd like discussed on HTV email them to radio@higherthings.org or send a text to 936-647-3235.

I was taught to make the sign of the cross in Sunday School and catechism classes as well as in parochial school. All the children in the parish crossed themselves during the Liturgy and then all the adults followed their example. This was back in the 1960's.

Thanks for this video. I often make the sign of the cross during prayer, but never in front of my parents. I did once at the dinner table and my parents immediately accused me of idolatry and saying that I had "fallen for Catholicism". When I did it in front of my friends during prayer one time, they accused me of being a closet Catholic. I just wish they would understand why it's a good thing.

I notice that, in your post, you did not explain why crossing yourself is a "good thing."

Making the sign of the cross from right to left is how the Greeks and Russians do it.

Right to left, or left to right...it doesn't really matter. The important thing is to make it, remembering your baptism. :)

"God is love." 1. John 4:16
That is the inner secret of the Trinity.
God became man [hand moving down] to gather us into his love [hand moving sideward], which is the Holy Spirit.
    "God is love."
Love is not only what God is like, it is who he is.
Love only exists in communion, in relationship. Therefore, God by his very essence must be something like a relationship of love. The love between Father and Son. And since God is beyond our human intellect and reason, love can be what Christian theology calls the Third Person of the Trinity. The Holy Spirit. One in being/essence, three in person.
In our human experience, perfect love seems to manifest itself when we give to others willing the good of the other. It is truly unconditional. Unconditionally giving.
And here is God becoming man, living the perfect - sinless - life, taking all punishment upon himself and dying the most dreadful death one can possibly imagine sothat we might be saved. What more could one give - how could one give more unconditionally?
Love is who he is. In Thomas Aquinas' words, God is 'ipsum esse per se subsistens'. Being itself subsisting. The sheer act of being. Love.
That is what we see in the first books of the bible to our salvation in Jesus Christ.
From the God who gives by creating, from the burning bush which was not consumed by its flames of self-giving love, to Pentecost.
Then, "what looked like flames or tongues of fire appeared and settled on their heads" - the Holy Spirit.
    God is love. :)
I can highly recommend Bishop Barron's many videos on the Trinity and "The Love of the Trinity" by Fr. Brice Higginbotham here on CZcams.

    1. Martin Luther advocated using the sign of the cross when battling demons. I do not recall Jesus giving the disciples that advice. They seemed to do well enough casting demons out just using the name in which all power in heaven and earth is invested
    2. I thought you Lutherans had abandoned Catholic tradition and tested everything against the principle of Sola Scriptura . Apparently not.

      1. The sign of the cross was because Jesus was crucified on a cross. When he was with his disciples casting out demons there was no cross yet because he was not crucified. Your comment is anachronistic.
      2. There is something in Protestantism called adiaphora you should read up on that.

William, you need to re-read John 3:8, this time in context, and stop imposing alien meanings on the words in order to make them fit with what you think is reasonable. According to John 3, we are born again by "water and the Spirit." It's perfectly clear. And then, as Paul says in Titus 3:5, "...he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit."
Of course nobody "needs" to make the sign of the cross. As Pastor Borghardt explained quite clearly, we do it to remember that in baptism Christ has placed his stamp of ownership on us, and that we daily need to drown our sinful nature so that the New Self can arise. We do it to remind ourselves that we are his- not because we have chosen Him, but because He has laid claim to us.

On the contrary, in the only place in the Bible where the term is used, it's PRECISELY the way Jesus says it's done- "by water and the Spirit!" It's your rationalism that says otherwise, not the Bible.

Unfortunately you are doing the sign of the cross in the wrong direction, irs supposed to be right then left, but the Catholics changed that and you follow the Catholic without questioning everything just like the filioque.
