The Adventures of Black Beauty is a British children's television drama series produced by London Weekend Television and shown by ITV in the United Kingdom between 1972 and 1974.
It was distributed internationally by London Weekend International. Black Beauty is a pure black, thoroughbred horse in late 19th Century rural England who is adopted into the household of James Gordon, a local doctor and widower, and befriended by his daughter's Vicky( season 1) Jenny ( season 2), son Kevin, and their friends Albert, Robbie(season 1) and Ned (season 2).
Each week the children get involved in an adventure that brings them into contact with all sorts of colourful characters and villians. You can always be assured, however, that Beauty is on hand to help save the day. The series was not an adaptation of the book by Anna Sewell, but a "continuation" featuring new characters created by Ted Willis, most prominently Dr James Gordon, played by William Lucas, and his children Vicky, played by Judi Bowker (who became Jenny, played by Stacy Dorning, in the second series) and Kevin, played by Roderick Shaw.
The theme tune, "Galloping Home", written by Denis King and performed by the London String Chorale, was released as a single and peaked at number 31 in the UK charts in the week of 2 February 1974.
I'm 53. Tears and goosebumps accompany the listening of this. 🙂
Me too lol. The piece of music is called Galloping Home..
and memories of when both my parents were alive
@@littlemissmuppet40
Me too & I was just about keeping it together’til I read your comment.
Great memories ❤️
yep also in the 53yr club, cant say ive ever liked horses [ especially when on a road and not in a field lol ] but i can connect with this somehow........🐎🐎🐎🐎
😭
One of the best TV Themes ever. Still sends shivers down my spine.
Best program on tv on a weekend
Yes, me too 🥰
As a horse crazy little kid this was as close as I could get to horses. This show was the highlight of the week. I was already horse crazy so this was absolutely fantastic! I can't listen to the theme without a lot of emotions. A nice time in your life before all the crap and hardships hit you!
ME, TOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Me too
I remember it well. So simple, beautiful and innocent, any of us who grew up in England in the 1970s were blessed.
And Ireland
I loved this as a kid. I didn't expect to cry so much hearing it now. Happy tears. Thank you for the memories
I cried also we watched this as a family and it brought back so many fond memories.
Absolutely Fantastic Music! Denis King, who wrote it, worked it out 'in the dark'. When his band played it, he got shivers, realising it was GREAT. Even 40 odd years later, Grandparents can hum the tune.
Back in the good old days long before media fear mongering and constant doom and gloom that we have nowadays.
I’m glad I’m not the only one. 51 here and it still sets me off.
I love it so much, and so many memories come back and it make's me sad and sentimental. 😢 greetings from munich/germany
I WAS A YOUNG KID BACK IN 1972 AND I REMEMBER UNTIL NOW 50 YEARS LATER THE THEME INTRODUCTION. ❤❤👍👍
I don't know what it is but now as a 52 year old man it still makes my eyes run 🖤🖤🖤
When life was more simple, we were happier..
life was just like a dream then....I want to go back 😊
Oh, wow, grew up watching this! That neigh at the end and then the French horns….the music is so amazing!
Sunday teatime viewing with all the family. Such happy days. Now there is only me left. Life sucks.
Same here good memories
That's sad xx
❤❤❤
I feel the same way, I now have to watch films and series alone because no one in my family is interested in it anymore 😔😪😢
A masterpiece of theme-music; just two tones and you know that a beautiful black stallion starts galopping down the hills; unforgetable just after nearly 50 years!!!
Brings back memories as a child, never forgot the intro and music.
When everything in life was so simple 😌 miss those days.
This was my last show on a Sunday night when I lived in Liverpool before going to bed for school next morning! I want to go back in time and stay there forever!
5 years old when I watched this with my parents.... mum is still alive (90 yrs old)
Sunday late afternoon was when this was on. Takes me back to happier carefree times.
yes!! sunday afternoons!
Ohhh what a memory. This theme tune is my all time favourite as a child. Growing up with horses this was our theme tune. It brings tears to my eyes and will always be THE best piece of music for ‘galloping home’. I’ve actually got this piece of music on my funeral plan as the music I ‘trot on’ and leave this earth to !!!!! 🙏😊 🐴
Ohh how I agree with you. ❤
Ditto, one of my favourite theme tunes from the 70's
And, My Friend Flicka❤
That was a MAGNIFICENT ANIMAL, so majestic seeing the horse running through the stream .
The horse's name was Fury. He was also Guy of Gisburne's horse in Robin of Sherwood, and on the original Lloyds' bank ads.
Black Beauty together with Follyfoot..... Classic Quality Television.
Stunning piece of music that really captures the majesty of that beautiful animal.
yes I do so much agree with you ! the man with the drums ( pauken ) must have been so proud to make this opening !!
No other theme tune can take me back to my childhood like this one, it is perfect.
@@robholton8153 I agree! i was 10 back in 1978 and very interested in horse riding! beautiful memories
@@robholton8153 I was 20, but love it just the same. I read where some crappy comedian used the music; I don't know which makes me more angry, that, or something called Equity that were greedy.
Oh my god I loved this as a child I’m now 50 and still love it x
One of my favourite series, when I was a child ❤
always cry when I hear this one - so beautiful
Douglas Mline same such an uplifting theme tune.
Me too!
And the same now...
Me too. X
Me too!
you're not alone! I had many years to hear this beautiful intro and tonight from the first note I started crying like an "old lady"!!!! OMG! What a magnificent tune that was and we didn't realized back then!
The best TV-theme ever! Gives me goosebumps every time I listen to it.
Used to watch both Black Beauty and Follyfoot in the early 70's.
Thank you Great Britain for all the terrific tv series you provided us with back in the days....
Best theme-tune, joint with Terrahawks!
Wow I forgot about Follyfoot! Must look it up on CZcams xxx
I have watched this over and over again because I have really fond memories of it in my childhood. That horse was magnificent. I wish I could afford to own one!
I'm amazed when you consider the technology of the time that the camera operator managed to keep everything in focus. The opening shot close-up - everything is moving. How on earth was it all framed and the correct exposure and focus achieved. Musically and technically it's a superb achievement.
One of the most beautiful television themes. Brings back happy memories of watching with both my late sister and Gran from England...my late parents bought their first coloured television in 1973 and enjoyed watching in colour.
Sunday afternoons early 70s followed by bath and tea and prep for school the following morning.
Absolutely relate to that, great days!
Omg same as me 👍👍👍
yeah depressing times until my Amstrad 464 came along a few years later
That was it.!!! Weekly bath after being out all day. Fish fingers and beans for tea. I never got the tap end...cos I was a.girl. two brothers kicking the hell out of each other..and I remember the dreaded spitty flannels
Same in our house and early to bed
one of the most poignant pieces of music truly captures the spirit of a horse how the horse reaches our soul this piece of music along with the theme from champions gets me every time tears flow once these themes are played
Back when tv shows were beautiful and had meaning .....
And the whole family could watch!
And not PC bullshit rammed down our throat every second of the day on every drama and advertising.
Absolutely. I showed my niece, who loves black horses and has a same soft toy she calls Black Angel 😇 💕, two days back about this childhood memory of mine. Being a boy who couldn't afford horses but had the spirit wanting to be free learned many great lessons in that series. We hadn't much but we believed in the good side of human beings. Times where moral was high. 2020 totally changed world.
so agree! lovely memories from my childhood when i became very interested in horse riding for a few years
@@dougieb2159 me too, much to the horror of my parents bank manager !
Best opening & closing them ever! Liked it then, like it even more now.
Memories of being a 6 year old. Used to watch at my grandmother's when we used to visit her for tea on a Sunday. Great days!
How beautifully and powerfully a piece of music can evoke a sense of freedom.
Brings back such a special memory. Sitting with my family the TV engineer had arrived and we were all very excited as we were getting a colour TV installed. I had only seen Black & White growing up in the 60's. Well when the guy tuned in the TV it lit up and there was that glorious music and the scene in full colour..speechless! I will always remember that moment. Wonderful! :)
Sounds fantastic xxxx I lived for this programme and the theme tune is just too stunning for words. Nearly cry every time I hear it. Xxx
Yes I remember my grand parents had rented a colour tv in the early '70's and we only had black and white at home. Twice as exciting to visit them on a Sunday tea time to watch this great programme. The theme always brings back memories of my younger childhood days, junior school and playing football either on the park or my grand parents back garden trying not to break the neighbours windows!
My very first record was Galloping home. Will always be a happy memory of my childhood. I never missed an episode of Black Beauty. X🖤❤️
Goosebumps from this child of the 70/80s.
A blast from the past, I remember this theme like it was yesterday, almost made me cry, a lovely show.
I used to love watching this on a wet Sunday afternoon in front of the wood fire... happy days. Seems so long ago now.
😇
For me, a powerful and emotionally infused tune..Though, it strangely brings my eyes to tears(?), I love-it!
John Me too. After reading the book by Anna Sewell this theme became even more poignant. In a way Anna was the godmother of animal welfare.
Me, too, John. Tears filling my eyes (once again) as I watched it just now, I thought, "Why am I crying?" I'd like to think it's because we are truly "alive"! :) The pure joy and FREEDOM which this music and video portray so powerfully thrilled my heart when I watched it over 30 years ago. It still does.

Note for vlog host here: Don't even give a moment's thought to the "thumbs downers." I watch a lot of videos. Even the finest ones get thumbs down. My theory is: some twisted, miserable, souls take delight in wandering through youtube dissing EVERYone -- and likely, especially the extra touching/lovely ones, like this one.
John I think it applies to many of us, even I get choked up every time I hear it and I use it as a ringtone lol
I don't know why you're welling up with fucking tears, I remember watching it when I was little and it never had that effect on me! If you want a REALLY emotionally-infused theme, just watch the opening titles to 'Jimmy's' about St James' University Hospital in Leeds - it's a wonder how I managed to keep my emotions in check!
Wow, someone needs to take a chill pill. Also thats a totally different thing, its not even about a horse that was clearly misstreated if ya ever read the book or watched the movie you'd know that and in this series they make him a friggin hero! For many people this horse had an inpact and was quite moving.
A GENIUS piece of composition, fantastic doesn't even cut it 👍!!
Awww such a brilliant score and such beautiful innocence back then!😢Awww
Et cette musique, j'en ai des frissons à chaque fois.
What a beautiful piece of music.
I'm Italian and live in Italy but I was born in England and I remember watching this as a small boy and so, so many memories are flooding back because of what is now to me a very moving piece of music.
This has brought back so many happy memories
That music was the best! I can't ever watch a video of a horse galloping without hearing this music in my head. Magic!
I randomly come across this, haven’t thought about this song or show for well over 25 years, and can still remember almost every beat and word…
Goosebumps. Amazing theme. Big up Denis King
Beautiful memories 💝❤️🥰💝
I worked at Anvil Film and Recording Studios when this Black Beauty Series was on TV. I heard this theme tune over and over again coming out of the Studio music room.. never did tire of hearing it. Hearing this tonight has brought back some lovely memories of the early 70's.I was the Receptionist.
I was nine when this was on TV and horse mad (and still am). I'm now 55 but the BB theme tune still reduces me to tears. It's so emotive. What a great experience to be working in the studio when it was being produced.
@@TheJules11 Yes it was the Theme Tune.. and incidental music that was added to the actual film in our Music Studio. This was in 1970(?) - 1974 definitely was when I left and moved to Italy.
Wow! Was the legendary Eric Tomlinson the engineer on BLACK BEAUTY?
I loved the theme tune, when I still hear it brings back great memories.
Just watching these credits reminds me of why this is one of the great British tv shows of the nineteen seventies..And Dennis Kings theme is still a bona fide classic.
A total classic!! I used to tune in early and watch to the very end because the theme song music was so glorious! Possibly the greatest ever!
This tune has been going through my head for YEARS and I just could not remember what it was for! It's increadible to hear this after looking for it for so long and hearing it's EXACTLY as I remembered it. What an emotive theme tume.
what a beautiful way to start your day on a positive note
Wonderful piece of music, makes me want to cry the second it starts♥️🦄
Same here 😭😭 lol
Music and horse footage at it’s FINEST!
Just a beautiful theme tune I am 57 now, and remember it being on the television on a Sunday afternoon. Wonderful memories and also reminds me of both my late parents, who also would watch it. It is very moving to hear it again.
This theme always reminds me of childhood, when I sat eager in front of the TV to witness yet another adventure of this stunning horse and its friends...
Still I shiver when I hear this track, it's amazing!
The most wonderful sound tune , shivers down the spine 💖
This TV Show, this Horse, is the Reason why i fell in love with those beautiful Creatures...
Thanks for a Trip back in to my childhood
I've still got the book. One of my most favourite books and movies as a child. I still cry at black beauty. Absolutely love it
Me too
Used to cry every time this was one beauty was just that!!! Magnificent
Thanks for uploading this. As a kid I loved this show and always remembered this theme tune, one of the best.
Trixie belle same 👍🏼
Agreed!!! Will never forget this music and the majesty of Black Beauty as He galloped wild and free through the countryside Even now as an adult of 51 I hold my head upwards as I listen to the music as if like His Majesty himself I stretch and want to arch my neck with the same pride as that beautiful horse so naturally did... xxxx....✨.....
Who else gets happy as soon as he hears that?! Totally me!!!
I used to ABSOLUTELY LOVE LOVE LOVE watching this programme when I was young....listening to the theme tune and seeing it makes me cry lol I don't know why probably makes me want to go back to the good ole days.....
Those were the days, bit different now isn't it.
It is different now.
Fantastic music 🎶 as well.
Haven't heard it in years.
Too different now.
what a lovely sound track.i love black and its a beauty.
Well me eye drop's are working I'm shedding a few tears classic intro👏
Relate to your feelings, wish I was 12 again when this classic came out!
Had to hear this tune so many years and suddenly .... I fell on this masterpiece to remind me my childhood .... Shivers and tears for that era when people had stronger feelings and more love in heart i think! For me maybe this is the best tv theme ever made! Just magnificent, watching this beautiful stallion galloping at the fields!
Great melody and arrangement. Beautiful soul galloping through the free world!
That's what I'm missing in modern TV Shows. A proper intro and closing theme. It makes a Tv Show unique...recognizable. I mean...what do you remember first from classic TV Shows?
Core memory: unlocked from this music and footage. I don't know why almost half a century later this theme song popped into my head. Thank goodness there's this clip to make me feel what I felt at age 4.
So many memories love it x
Wonderful theme music to this drama
Brings back happy childhood memories
It used to go out on a Sunday tea time
Wonderful.
I used to watch this with my grandmother when I was a wee boy. That gorgeous, epic theme music makes me think of her (she passed away).
About 15 years ago when CZcams was first, making a splash, this theme or TV intro was one of the first things that I looked up or searched for. It was with great joy that I discovered how many people across this planet had put themselves on the same mission, trying to determine if this wonderful French horn theme was real or just some tormenting fantasy from childhood
.
Absolutely legendary
Back in the day when everything was still pure
This brings tears to my eyes memory's of childhood
That is one hell of a well written piece of music!!! Brilliant!!
I first heard of this theme in 1974 and loved it since. One of the better production theme songs that requires a full orchestra and produced beautifully that like the book it to me is a classic.
Memories
Classic theme! Reminds me of sunday afternoons in the 80’s, just before bullseye came on!!!!
never missed an episode and now have all the movies that come out.
I remember as a six year old watching this around 6 O Clock on a Sunday evening, while having my tea with my brothers and sisters. I always looked forward to it and remember it with fondness. They don’t make TV dramas for kids like this anymore. I wonder why that is??????????
Love this. This sequence was the highlight of my Sunday afternoon when I was very little...
Rollicking music, pounding timpani and swingle-esque vocals, provide an iconic soundtrack for a whole generation.
‘Galloping Home’ the theme for the TV series #BlackBeauty, rightly won composer
Denis king an Ivor Novello Award.
My favourite series in my childhood
I remember watching Black Beauty when I was very young in Ireland. I am now 50 and the tune is as good too listen to now as it was when i was a kid. It has to be one of if not the best start and end theme to any series or film on TV. Its just 100% emotion, power and empathy all in one. Amazing!
A sterling piece of music, beautifully photographed.
👏
Every Saturday afternoon on german broadcaster ZDF. Great memories. Denis Kings masterpiece.
As a kid I watched this TV serial at Czechoslovak TV. I loved it, includes the music, there!
@Martin Pytr Was this back in the 70s? Did you get a lot of UK tv?
@@notdaveschannel9843 As far as I remember, it was aired in the 80s, but it could have been aired prior that as well. British TV series have been always very popular, especially detective series, history/adventure series and shows for kids. Similarly, some Czech (Czechoslovak) TV series from the 70s and 80s were quite popular in German speaking countries (Krankenhaus am Rande der Stadt, Luzie der Schrecken der Straße, Die Besucher, Der fliegende Ferdinand, Die Märchenbraut, Pan Tau).
And a few Czech TV series were aired on British TV in the 70s and 80s too, the most memorable one for kids being The Little Mole (Krtek)
Gosh this brings back some memories,I’m so emotional 😪
Sunday teatime at home...
We go colour television in 1970..we thought we were the bees knees.of the cul-de-sac...
Best tv theme tune everrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
best ever! these drums !! start crying right away .... used to ride horses all my childhood. Me and my bestie together on the black Schet... :-) pretending she was Black Beauty hihi
Ich mochte es, es war einer meiner besten serien damals! Es war besser als heute👍👍😘😘
Absolutely classic piece of music, I do wish itv would re screen the series, maybe on itv 2 or 3 on a Sunday morning, they should have an option for allowing the public to request the screening of old shows.
Brings back lovely memories 😍
Epic nostalgia! Feels like finding a long lost friend...
59 and sobbing my eyes out to this music..so many memories, don't make them like this no more 😢
