My Teacup Chihuahua does this a lot.. More so if he goes near the bed of my Pit bull.. or if he is super excited.. I just got off the phone with my vet and she told me it is very common in the breed of little dogs.

I have a Frenchie (Rocky) and this happened last night while we were watching Bear Grills. At first I thought he just didn't like Bear Grills and this was his way of telling me... and then I got alarmed, ran down the stairs to open the front door, unlock the gate, move the bikes, get the car out, realised I still had my boxers on and also forgot my dog upstairs while I jumped in the car actually wanting to go to the animal hospital. Just glad it's not something serious. Today he is running around acting crazy as always.đâ€ïž
Thank you. I thought my dog had valley fever. The vet did blood work and an X-ray and couldnât figure out what was wrong with her. I just happened upon an article when I googled why my dog keeps sneezing. She now has sneezing on top of reverse sneezing.
Yep, our cavapoo boy Buster does this almost daily.., mostly when he gets excited to see me when I get home from work..but he get's over it in a bout 30-50 seconds..
My Labrador puppy 54 days old started doing this kind of act and it really freaked me out. I felt like he was gasping for breath. After watching your video rest assured I understood that what he was doing is reverse sneezing .. thankyou doctor for your wonderful video well explained. ...

My older male Maltese dog (he was a stray so I don't know how old he is), and he started this frequently lately. Today he's had 2 episodes of it, it always happens when I bring him back inside from running around outside. It lasts for about a minute 30 seconds. I recorded a video of it because I thought I was about to need to rush him to the vet. Thank you, if he continues to do this I'll get him checked out.
Thanks for this information. We haves a 5 yr old Miniature Labradoodle that has done this since he was a puppy and have never been able to diagnose it. We have discovered that if we gently pat him on his back that it helps to stop the spasms. Everything you described is what sets it off, such as eating, excitement and sometimes pulling on his leash. We have worried that someday he would have a stroke or something. This makes me feel a lot better about this.
Thank you .. took my Jack Russell to the vet today cuz she has kennel cough and got some med and now itâs 2:30am in the morning she just had a reverse sneeze episode scared the living out of me cuz I thought she was dying. Your video helped
I have a French Bulldog her name is Niecy, as I got her from my Niece that had a litter. When we had her spayed our vet suggested that she could clip the flaps in her nose to make it easier for Niecy to breathe. Sheâs 2 years old now and the first time she reversed sneezed it scared me as I thought she was having some kind of seizure! I comforted her and she came out of it! The older sheâs gotten the less frequent the reverse sneezing has gotten! I found that when she gets into her reverse sneezing jag,if I push down on her nose with my finger she comes out of it quicker!
I DIDNât hear any âPREVENT THISâ info, did I miss something- did you forget part of the script? I appreciate your contribution to the www. Thank you. CheersâŁïž
Thanks for the feedback Evelan. Yes, you must have missed it. đ Prevention is related to the cause. So if you have a brachycephalic breed with BOAS, surgery will assist. If you have a dog with allergies, you may need to consider changing triggering conditions or medication. Hope that makes sense? Thanks so much for listening. đ
Great informative video! I took my dog to the vet who couldnât find anything wrong but gave me an rx for coughing. I gave him one pill and stopped as it didnât help at all. Iâve looked at videos of other dogs reverse sneezing but it wasnât like my little dogâs sneezing. But he has a short snout and it sounds/looks exactly like Mordecai (sp?) in your video. Thank you very much for your extremely helpful video!
We're so glad you found this useful! If your dog is a brachycephalic breed you might want to investigate if he has other signs of airway issues. All the best.
I just watched a video after an episode today because I've always used the tricks of pressing down her tongue, massaging her throat with two fingers but it wasn't working but I watched a video of a guy today and he closes the mouth and covers just one nostril and it worked so well
Love the information thank you! I thought my pug was dying!! From a marketing point of view, 9 mins is a bit long. Average attention span is like 15 seconds. Iâd speed it up a notch and cut the time in half to maintain and keep a larger demographic đ„°đđđŒđŸđŸ

Hi, my ten-year-old Chiweenie on occasionally once-in-a-blue-moon would reverse sneeze, but for the past couple of months it's been more frequently. I was going to give him allergy shots the vet recommended I can do but this has helped me to help him and I greatly appreciate the advice. Thank you!
My rat terrier had this happen in the middle of the night after barking at a severe lightning/thunder storm. I thought âThis is it. Sheâs going to choke to death.â She initially tried to throw up but didnât. She slept the rest of the night with it happening one more time multiple snorts. Then in the morning but hasnât had it happen in hours now. Sheâs playing, barking, seems normal otherwise. Iâll try the finger in the mouth if it happens again. Thank you for this video! Just sent it to my GF. She has a Frenchie, and this happened last night. However, we are still gonna go see a vet as it happened four times in one night :(
After researching I come across this video and I think my Maltese Shih Tzu, may just suffer from this. Itâs been happening on and off for a long time.the first few times Iâll admit... sent me into panic mode and he appeared distressed and scared, then after going through this a few times I discovered that during an episode if I was calm, sat with him and rubbed/massaged under his neck and spoke calmly he coped much better. These were not happening enough or that regular that if we were at the vet I would think about mentioning it. I honestly had just put it down to his old age ( now 84 in human years) he had an episode about 15 mins ago and this time I grabbed my camera and filmed him in action. I have an appointment tomorrow with our vet for his arthritis injection and Iâll be sure to mention this also just to be safe but I do feel much more at ease after seeing this video. So thank you :)
I have a mix Mini Schnauzer and Maltese, and it sounds like a loud reverse gasping for air. It was pretty terrifying the first time it happened.. We hardly hear it, don't know if its more frequent because sometimes we're not home for a long while. I think He throws up a little in his mouth and then swallows it back.. I feel so bad when i see it happening.
I have a Pekingese/Chihuahua mix, she's almost 7 years old, and I can tell her reverse sneezing still makes her so nervous! She doesn't have a totally flat face like a purebred Pekingese, but she still has a very short snout.
Yes it can be very distressing for the dog. Next time she has a dental exam/clean, ask your vet to check her for signs of BOAS. She may benefit from surgery.
Thank you. My Yorkie started about three weeks ago. I had Corona Virus and thought she had it too. Now I knew to rub her nose. Now I can put my finger in her mouth if the nose blocking doesnât work. ..Plus I now know
I have a Cavalier King Charles. She seems to reverse sneeze when she gets over excited. She wears a harness when going for walks but even then sheâll reverse sneeze if she over reacts and pulls on her lead upon seeing another dog. Itâs quite alarming at times. Today she became agitated on our walk. It took her several minutes to calm down and breathe normal.
Hi Ruth, thanks for your comment. Yes this can be quite common. As you say her anxiousness is likely causing her to breath in an abnormal way that is causing this issue. The more you can practice calm walks, the less reverse sneezing will occur. All the best.
Thank you. Yes it's reverse sneezing but she coughs and hacks. That actually has been first. Wet nose. Drinks well. Gums pink. Resting a lot. Cool. Seems to have this most often once up and moving. Can you assist. And she eats well.
Thank you so much. That was really helpful. My vet told me to look this hope when I told her what my frenchie was doing. We've found it hopeful to blow in our frenchie girls nose. And that helps her stop & breathe when she reserve sneezes.
Glad you found it helpful. Yes blowing in the nose or even their ear can help. Sometimes they snap though....and if your face is close you might inadvertently get in their way đł
My Frenchie Bear reverse sneezes a lot. Lately he has been âcoughingâ up mucus/phlegm and sometimes food after a reverse sneeze.. And it can happen multiple times in a day. I know this could be allergies as the seasons are changing. Would Benedryl help to settle it down?
Hi Connie Thanks for your question. Benadryl could possibly work, however studies show that anti-histamines are only effective in about 20% of dogs. If it doesn't work, you may need to investigate other medications for allergies.
Thank you so much for this video †our Frenchie (5 y/o) started reverse sneezing last week. How often is still normal for them? We took him to the vet who gave him an injection and he stopped reverse sneezing for 3 days now it started again⊠I suppose it is allergies but it would be nice to know how often is normal for Frenchies đ thank you!!!
My French did this first time when he was 10 weeks old. Totally freaked me out. He is now 6 years old, he has done it his whole life. I just pet him to keep him calm. It stop at around 30 seconds.
Hi Stephanie Thanks for your question and your kind words. Yes it could be genetic. Just like we have features like our parents, our dogs do too. So if a dog has a long soft palate then it is possible that their offspring will have a long one too. Take care!
Is this common with staffordshire terriers as well? My dog does this often, wish I saw this video 10 years ago. I look forward to trying this with her.Ty
My dog has been doing this for years, he is a terrier cross, my vet thinks he has a soft palate. He does this every time he gets over excited, it sounds awful but she said that itâs highly unlikely it will get any worse. He occasionally coughs but itâs mostly a honking sound.
My Chihuahua had a bad episode last night. It came on suddenly and she had trouble breathing most of the night. I'm taking her to the vet today because I can tell she has fluids draining along with this even if nothing is coming out. She's not herself too.
My shih tzu (7 months old ) has been reverse sneezing from 5 days He makes that scary noise . At first I was terrified I asked my vet . He told my dog was sneezing . So just came to checkout what reverse sneezing is . Thanks a lot !
Hi! Thank you so much for this. I was super worried. My dog is a stray and she was sleeping and then started to reverse sneeze. I realized it happened after I put on lavendar essencial oil. Could you explain if maybe my dog was allergic and that was the reason?
Our Cavi does this when ever we have visitors, and we have to block her nose to stop it. It used to last a few seconds but now is more like up to 30 sec and will repeat this again up to 3 times. It did not start till she was over one and she is now 4. We believe it possibly has become a habit as has increased since lock down - as we are not getting more visitors.
Hi Marie It's more likely related to the length of her soft palate and it can get worse if they put on a little weight (just like us...I snore more when I'm a bit porky! đł). At least you know the cause!
My little 6 lb Morkie started reverse sneezing about 6 months ago. It's was far and few between but as of the last 3 months ths the episodes have increased and it happens much more frequently. I have taken him to a vet who, prescribed a cough medicine type thing for him and that helped for the time he was on the medication but approximately a week after he started again. It happens at any time and is becoming increasingly more frequent. Happens when he is sleeping at night, laying around, after eating or drinking and at any other time for no apparent reason. What could I do to help him and what could be the cause
My dog started reverse sneezing a few days ago. Other dogs in my neighborhood also recently started reverse sneezing. So i assume this is environmental allergies. Ive seen her do this more at night, sometimes she has around 6-7 episodes. I took her to the vet and recommended some drugs. 4th day today and i see slight improvement but she still having around 3 episodes a day. Is that something to worry about? She will be 1 year in March. Thank you for the tips.
It does sound a lot like allergies. In this instance there is very little that can be done aside from anti-allergy medications...which i assume is what your vet has provided.
So a backwards sneez is kinda like an asthma attack? This is just a question I want to know what it's like when my dog has asthma so that I know if mine does but thank you for this
This video was really helpful. I have two Foxies, 2 yr old siblings I have had since 8 weeks. The little girl has done this occasionally since very young so I have got used to hearing her, however her brother has only just started doing it so would you suggest getting him looked at? Thanks
Hi Steph, if the signs in your boy are unusual and continue it would be worth a check. Realise that your vet will need to anaesthetise - they need to check for foreign bodies and flush the nose etc.
Iâve been told this before about why vets say what causes reverse sneezing. My dog is a t-cup short nosed chihuahua. The only time he ever reverse sneezes are from emotions. When I go away to the store or anywhere, when I get back he gets excited then he immediately goes into reverse sneezes. When a stranger comes to the door he is quiet but as soon as they leave he starts reverse sneezing. When we are outside and another dog and he sniff each other in a friendly way, as soon as we move on he will reverse sneeze. My little guy doesnât reverse sneeze because of any irritant. I had a toy yorkie that was exactly the same way. So I am not an advocate of the traditional explanation of reverse sneezing.
My shih tzu started doing this just a few minutes ago and I started freaking out and instinctively started rubbing his throat and opening his mouth because I thought he was having trouble puking and it sort of made him calm down but man I was totally freaking out inside!!!!! Probably not gonna get much sleep for a while now.
It is SO simple...you put your mouth over their nose & hold the mouth closed allowing you to gently VERY gently push your breath into their nostrils & then GENTLY draw your breath out. Release & do normal petting of the back & neck area for reassurance. Boom! Unless it's a physical anatomy based issue.... In most cases you will find sand or other small particles/irritants from them in YOUR mouth when done. It may take 2 or 3 times over several days. Do this during an episode. It is just like allergies in humans. Remove the irritants & voila! Gentle is the key. THIS IS NOT LIKE EMERGENCY BREATHING. Just a slight movement of air. If this doesn't help your pet may have a more serious issue like an irritated or damaged trachea. PLEASE!!! DO NOT USE COLLARS for control. PLEASE USE HARNESSES!! MAKE SURE THE HARNESS FITS & DOESN'T RIDE UP ONTO THE THROAT! If your pet pulls hard 1x or consistently over time you can kill them by breaking what people call the "wind pipe".

Thank you ! My pug is only 6 months old and just started doing this it was so scary the first time but only lasts like a whole minute which feels like eternity and then sheâs back to normal
Yes it can be scary!
Pugs seem to have this more often. It would e a good idea for you to talk to your vet about soft palate surgery.
Here is some info
www.yourvetonline.com/dog-cant-breathe-brachycephalic-obstructive-airway-syndrome/
Thank you soooo much. I just stumbled across this and itâs a blessing. I too have pug puppy and brought him to the vet. The vet most definitely did not know about reverse sneezes and I left still uncertain what was going on with my little Sonny.
When my pug Loki did this the first time, we were scared. Not knowing what to do. I tried doing research in the moment but could not find anything effective until your video. Thank you for explaining this to us.
Thanks for your feedback! We're gland you found the video helpful!
Iâve always just massaged my Pekingese throat or briefly rubbed his nose to cause a normal sneeze. Thanks for the finger in the mouth trick to encourage a swallow.
Yes there are a few methods...sometimes you need to try a few! Basically whatever makes them swallow generally works!
Oh my god thank you so much I thought my dog was having a heart attack itâs scary so much now I know what the cause of it and how to present it thank you so much for helping me
Our pleasure. Thank you for the kind words.
My Teacup Chihuahua does this a lot.. More so if he goes near the bed of my Pit bull.. or if he is super excited.. I just got off the phone with my vet and she told me it is very common in the breed of little dogs.
Yes it can be.
Thank you so much for the video.my dog has been reverse sneezing .i went to the vet and he gave a course of antibiotic thinking my pet has lung infection.I will talk with the vet again.
Sometimes our animals have multiple issues. I'm glad you are talking to a vet.
Hahaha great work glad we could help!
Yes it can be very common and frequent.
My Labrador puppy 54 days old started doing this kind of act and it really freaked me out. I felt like he was gasping for breath. After watching your video rest assured I understood that what he was doing is reverse sneezing .. thankyou doctor for your wonderful video well explained. ...
Thank you, this was useful advice. That dog is really cute too, it looks like a wombat
Haha thanks Christopher. I'll be sure to tell Mordecai that you think he looks like a wombat đđđ
Thank you! I rescued a frenchie and she started doing it when the weather got warm (UK) especially at night time and it woke me up and absolutely scared the heebie jeebies out of me!! I will try the mouth massage!
P.s Mordecai seems an absolute sweetheart!
Hi Caitlin
Good on you for rescuing! Frenchies are awesome dogs with big personalities! Mordecai is a crack up đ
If you haven't already, it's a good idea to get your girl assessed for boas. If you need a recommendation for a vet let me know here where you are located, or email customercare @yourvetonline.com and I can suggest a few places.
Have fun with your girl....Mordecai features in a few of the videos and often makes an appearance in our live tutorials on Tuesdays (10Am aest....oh lordie I see it's 1am your time đł - might be replay only đ).
Take care đ
Thank you for this video!!! My doggie had such a bad episode today and I started freaking out. Appreciate the information đ
So glad you found it useful.
Hi RP LOL
Yes it's usually related to a change in moisture in the air when you see it as you describe.
All the best!
@@YourVetOnline ah okay thank you for reassuring me that it is nothing life threatening!!
Thankyou for this! Explained why my Frenchie was making these strange noises. A relief to know its not serious.
Glad you found it useful.
Yes, some dogs are very prone to it. I'm glad our video helped!
Thank you .. took my Jack Russell to the vet today cuz she has kennel cough and got some med and now itâs 2:30am in the morning she just had a reverse sneeze episode scared the living out of me cuz I thought she was dying. Your video helped
Womderful. Never knew such a thing. HAPPY TO KNow. Because my boxer girl does this.
Thanks so much for listening. đ
Thanks doc! Very helpful. I have a small shiphoo and she does this quite often. Good to understand the reasons behind it
Glad to be of help.
Thanks for the tips on what to do. When my dog does it, I take him outside for fresh air and it clears up.
I just watched a video after an episode today because I've always used the tricks of pressing down her tongue, massaging her throat with two fingers but it wasn't working but I watched a video of a guy today and he closes the mouth and covers just one nostril and it worked so well
Yes this is one of the techniques we show in the video.
Thank you very much! It freaked me out when it happened to my Shih Tzu. I think its the weather change.
Yes allergies can cause this!
This just happened to my shitzhu for the first time today after her afternoon walk and I got so scared. đ
Hey Scot
Yep...that first time you hear it can be very scary đł
Glad we were able to settle the nerves and possibly prevent the mad dash to an ER clinic where all the vets feel bad at saying it's all OK đ
Thanks for the fabulous feedback. Yes...I'm a slow talker đ€Šââïž and yes, sometimes I fail to keep to a coherent script đ€Šââïž
Thankfully it's not my day job đđđ
Tell me, have you got any other topics you'd like me to cover? Another problem is my lack of inspiration!
Thank you!
My chiweenie does it 2-3 times per day during pollen seasons but we had a lot of success with Zyrtec.
Yes allergies can definitely cause this. Mordecai (dog in video) always gets worse in spring!
Incredibly useful, thanks so much!
Thank you so much for this video as weâre 2,000 miles away from home traveling and our vet. đđ»
Brilliant video. Very helpful as my 9month frenchie started doing this last night was just like your video of your dog
So glad you found this helpful!
Oh thanks for the alternative to plugging the nose! Much more gentle. Mordecai is soooo darling!! Cool channel, glad to subscribe!
Thanks so much Karla! I'm glad you are enjoying it. Please let me know if you have any topics you'd like me to cover (sometimes I have such brain facts when it comes to thinking up ideas đ).
Mordecai is awesome (I'm Chief aunty....he is owned by my neighbour!).
Thanks. It just happened to my dog. He was sleeping in my room and I was woken up by this loud noise. Was scary.
Hi Chris
Yes it can be common in many dogs. Hope your boy is doing well! Happy NY.
Now I can put my finger in her mouth if the nose blocking doesnât work. ..Plus I now know
My lab does this quite often, it freaks me out so much but it makes me feel better to know itâs not uncommon
I commented that my little t-cup chihuahua is the same way. I donât buy that there is only one explanation for reverse sneezing.
Wow! I will try this with my Frenchie!! Thanks so much
Mordecai is adorable
My Frenchie Bear reverse sneezes a lot. Lately he has been âcoughingâ up mucus/phlegm and sometimes food after a reverse sneeze.. And it can happen multiple times in a day. I know this could be allergies as the seasons are changing. Would Benedryl help to settle it down?
Hi Connie
Thanks for your question. Benadryl could possibly work, however studies show that anti-histamines are only effective in about 20% of dogs. If it doesn't work, you may need to investigate other medications for allergies.
Great will try on mini schnauzer 8yrs has sessions of RS then ok for a while
Thank you so much for this video †our Frenchie (5 y/o) started reverse sneezing last week. How often is still normal for them? We took him to the vet who gave him an injection and he stopped reverse sneezing for 3 days now it started again⊠I suppose it is allergies but it would be nice to know how often is normal for Frenchies đ thank you!!!
Thank you Dr. sooo much! Such a big help. I didn't know what my dog was doing.đđđ€ŁđđŸđđŸđđđđđđđ
May May
Glad to be of help!
My French did this first time when he was 10 weeks old. Totally freaked me out. He is now 6 years old, he has done it his whole life. I just pet him to keep him calm. It stop at around 30 seconds.
I have 2 chihuahuas which are father and son and it seems as if they reverse sneeze more then the other chi chi's we have. Can it be a genetic condition? Is it common in chihuahuas? Pancake is 1 year and 8 months and Nugget is 8 months. Your video has put my mind at ease, but I just want to be sure. Thank you for your videos and your time.đđ¶đ©đŸ
Hi Stephanie
Thanks for your question and your kind words.
Thank you doc..worries is gone now..my shipo baby start to sneeze to much and after he do reverse sneeze so i get panic and scared đđ„
Yes can be scary!
My dog has been doing this for years, he is a terrier cross, my vet thinks he has a soft palate. He does this every time he gets over excited, it sounds awful but she said that itâs highly unlikely it will get any worse. He occasionally coughs but itâs mostly a honking sound.
It happens to my little Maltese when she gets over excited, it's awful and so scary
My Chihuahua had a bad episode last night. It came on suddenly and she had trouble breathing most of the night. I'm taking her to the vet today because I can tell she has fluids draining
along with this even if nothing is coming out. She's not herself too.
Oh Sally this doesn't sound good.
Please let us know how you get on at the vet and if you have any questions don't hesitate to ask.
All the best.
@@YourVetOnline Thank you so much. It ended up being allergies. I gave her benadryl and she's good as new.
My shih tzu (7 months old ) has been reverse sneezing from 5 days
He makes that scary noise . At first I was terrified
I asked my vet . He told my dog was sneezing . So just came to checkout what reverse sneezing is . Thanks a lot !
So glad you found this helpful! Please check out our other videos and let us know of any topics you'd like us to cover!
Thanks â€â€â€â€
My pleasure
Fantastic! What a relief!
I feel the same way i have allergies
Your baby is soooooo cute â€ïž
He is very cute!
Hi! Thank you so much for this. I was super worried. My dog is a stray and she was sleeping and then started to reverse sneeze. I realized it happened after I put on lavendar essencial oil. Could you explain if maybe my dog was allergic and that was the reason?
Yes be very careful with any essence oils, scented candles. They can cause problems like this and some are toxic.
Hi Marie
It's more likely related to the length of her soft palate and it can get worse if they put on a little weight (just like us...I snore more when I'm a bit porky!
I forgot to mention that at the end it seems like she throws up but nothing comes out. Maybe water and a bit of saliva o mucus.
It does sound a lot like allergies. In this instance there is very little that can be done aside from anti-allergy medications...which i assume is what your vet has provided.
ThankYou Sooooo Much!đ
No thank you!
thank you. my 2nd oldest dog and my 2nd youngest dog does that and i got a bit worried bc the 2nd youngest is doing it a lot
How often reserve sneezing should I be worried? Is 3-5 times a day (24 hours) too much? Short sneeze that lasts 10-15 seconds.
Hi thanks my dog had this after some children were screaming and running at us was this still a backward sneeze or panic attack? Love your videosđ
So my.dog started doing it in May, or April iam.taking her to the vet today she does it out her sleep
Yes, as we explained in the video excitement can cause reverse sneezing.
It can be confronting! Try not to stress. Just get him to swallow. Sometimes blowing in their ear works too!
It normal and it will happen again it ok .
Thank you..
My !little peke did this a lot and turned out teeth /gums . She's free of it now after infected teeth removed under 'anesthetic.
Great content ! This helped me and my frenchie a tonđ€
