    I started photography as a kid in the 70s. In high school I had a Pentax SLR with a 50mm lens. What camera to bring was easy. Camera, + one lens plus as much film as I had. Now that I am in my early 50's I own way too much stuff. Photography is a hobby but I am obsessed with it. About ten years ago I learned something interesting about myself. If I travel with one body and one wide lens + tripod , I will take fantastic photos that I am proud of. I learned that the less stuff I took, the better off I was. Now I travel with a beat up Leica M body with a single 21mm lens. If I need something digital I use my phone. I have the best time because everything is simple. Most of the time I don't even bring my backpack with me, I leave it at the hotel. I challenge anyone who reads this to just take a simple set up on a trip. You can walk further, and really focus on getting the photo with what you have. If you are worried about screwing up a once in a lifetime location, take this mindset and try it next time you're in a familiar location.

      I just got back from a trip having only brought my trusty old Fuji F30 compact point & shoot from 2007, with a single xD card and battery. Managed to get some great captures with a unique look, especially when using the flash. Used my phone for some wider landscape shots since it works rather well for that. It's all about capturing moments and enjoying the experience for me.

    So I don't know how heavy your camera bag is, but my camera bag filled with my camera, 4 prime lenses, accessories and audio (shotgun and rode wireless pro) did not break 20lbs. Obviously listen to your doctor, but I rarely see youtubers talk about the importance of working out and proper form for walking with a backpack which is an alternative to drastically lowering the load.
    For travel I have a light load because there are other reasons why it is important to do so, which is why I watched your video here in order to decide what lenses to bring. My current plan is to pair the nikon zf with a 40 f2 and 24-120.

    • @FullFrameStudio
      @FullFrameStudio Před 2 měsíci +1

      I've lugged around a 20lbs backpack manyyyy times before I got my nanuk 935 case. I shoot with my lumix s5ii, and primarily the 70-200 f4. They're a heavy combo. With my Wescot fjii and a 14inch MacBook, 20-60mm lens... That's a heavy backpack.

    • @gerardneedham
      @gerardneedham  Před 2 měsíci +1

      Yeah so 20lbs is still way to heavy to have on your back, I did script this and wanted to add it but the video would be too long.
      The physiotherapist told me that the max weight of your camera bag should be under 2 kg, that’s only 4 pounds.
      So I used to be like, I’m tuff and strong I’m from NZ I can carry a 20kg (40lbs) bag no worrys, I deadlift 180kg maaaate.
      But in reality a heavy camera bag is terrible for you, compared to doing deadlifts at the gym

    That’s a lot of kit! I’m only a hobbyist so I travel for pleasure and take a camera along while I’m doing it. I never change lenses while out so only need one camera and one, maybe two lenses. That means a medium zoom (I have the new 16-50mm) and I’m deciding whether to get the 27mm Fuji lens or a 18mm lens, either the Fuji lens or the Voigtlander (I have no problem with manual focus lenses). Put the days lens on, put it into a PD 3L sling along with a spare battery. Job done!

    Unfortunately, it's not common knowledge how debilitating and life altering neck and back injuries could have on them until it does. As someone who has suffered from both, I always advise people to go as light as possible, use wheeled bags if they can, no messenger bags due to the uneven distribution of weight, starting off with a lightweight bag (when empty), and the importance of neck and back exercises, strength, mobility and stamina

    Great insights. Having a lightweight setup is so helpful, especially when traveling where you potentially carry the camera all day long. In my opinion my full frame Nikon Zf has better IQ than my Fujifilm X100VI but the weight is nearly double even with a lightweight lens (40mm), and would hurt my shoulder after being out all day with it in a sling- to your point slings probably aren’t the most ergonomic, but they are so fast to get the camera out to shoot. We’re traveling to Korea in the fall and I’m considering getting the XT5 or the A7cii for interchangeable lenses
