- First of all, I need to give a huge thank you to postcarder Laura Levy for inviting me over to her home and letting me borrow these extremely rare VHS tapes. It was nice meeting you in real life! Laura was friends with the Gin Blossoms in the early days.
I believe that this is the only video on youtube with founding guitarist and main songwriter of all of those early hits (Hey Jealousy, Found Out About You, etc), Doug Hopkins. If you are unaware of Doug's story, I recommend that you read the "Jesus of Suburbia" article published by the Detroit Metro times- I will link it in FB comments. In short, Doug wrote the hits but had some trouble in the studio (Alcoholism) when it came time to record the major label debut. Instead of the label helping Doug through these issues with their big money, the label pressures the band to kick him out... and they did, which is part of the reason why they have never released anything that even touches the caliber of the early stuff since.
You can read the detail in the metro times article about the circumstances leading up to his tragic death from suicide on December 5th, 1993.

Gracias my friend!
Doug Hopkins has amazing stage presence; very fiery playing style live.
Is Doug playing the white guitar, next to lead singer? @catones2868
@@starchildlarock yes
The guy was clearly the standout.
Wow. Doug is force of nature. We got robbed of his gifts. Long live his music 🎶
I came back to watch this again to remind myself how great rock n roll is. ❤
This footage is such an important piece of history for the fans, thank you so much to the people who recorded and converted this!
To this day I think that the line “the lost horizons I can see are filled with bars and factories and in them all we fight to stay awake” is top five best opening lines of a song. Ever.
I always appreciated his songs and felt he was the reason for their success. How hard it must have been to deal with alcoholism and depression, and then lose your best friends to the record industry and have to sit at home and listen their success without you.
And that you were the one who wrote the music and lyrics to their Best and Most Popular Songs. And that You Were The Person Who STARTED THE BAND AND NAMED THE BAND.
I'll never forgive them for what they did to Doug.
@@GrandpaMunstersMultitrackLab they didn't do it to Doug. Doug did it to Doug.
@@shakarocks Not in my book. It's one thing if he had to go because he had a drinking problem. Understand that. It's a completely different thing when they don't tell him to his face, put him on a plane, and tell him later (by phone or letter or whatever). AND, then they kick him in the balls with a measly $1,200 check and make MILLIONS off the songs HE WROTE. Total bullshit. No wonder he committed suicide.
@@GrandpaMunstersMultitrackLab so you don't blame the addict and instead gaslight those who have to deal with said addict? Riiiiiiight. Hopkins showed up unable to perform at the sessions if he showed up at all. This means that the record company/band had to hemhorage money while he wasted everyone's time. I have no idea why they offered a payout but it could be that he wasted tens of thousands of dollars of studio time because he couldn't stay sober.
Raw and energetic. Where they started as Bar band. Doug Hopkins was a talented lost sole. RIP.
I always wanted to see footage of Doug. What a treasure this is. Thanks very much for putting this together.
I was their that night I was a fan way back still am a fan would love more of this stuff classic.
I always loved their mainstream stuff… but when I found their original album Dusted and videos like this, I couldn’t believe how much better it sounded with that faster punkish style tempo and rougher vocals … and then I learned about Doug
Frenetic energy, restless soul -- Can't work in a controlled environment. If Doug had found peace in his heart, his spirit might have soared. It's hard to witness someone spiral downward, harder to know they'll take you with them for lack of direction. Hope and the decision to reach for it: out of sight, overtaken by sadness. Beware of darkness; fake it until you can make it. Cherish life. All the best to Doug and Robin. Such a legacy. The pain of the living and the dead.
it seems that professional support, a LLC for the songs and a fair lawyer would have been the cover Doug. He needed some prep to take on the blind sided mutiny and foreboding sea of sharks. Thanks to someone special at A&M to needle division into 20 yr old mates knowing they were to naive to corporate conniving.
Such a great post. Thats exactly what I feel watching this- the energy in a small club with a great band is simply like nothing else on earth.
I was there and also used to see them at Long Wongs around this time. All of the hits were played differently then, the way that Doug wrote them, before the labels came. Fuck I’m old.
Amazing, thank you for doing this. It's something that none of us thought we'd ever get to see.
Doug plays like his hair is on fire.
I was there!!! The Sun Club was an old house that had been turned into a bar. It was on 8th Street.
That period (fall of 1989) was them at their peak, they look like they're having fun, and they rocked. This is fucking awesome!! Good job with the transfer.
First time I've seen video with Doug in it.He was a talented musician. Hope he found peace.
whay happened to him?
@@abbeyjane7689 he killed himself
So cool to see, they rocked this show. I can’t help but wonder the Gin Blossoms would have been if they got Doug help. His stage presence was intense, his guitar playing was passionate and his songwriting would have brought them to another level.
Aw, man there’s nothing they could have done. Only the addict can get help. 💔 They all tried, and they were all kids.
I often think about the great songs that never got written because of addiction.
I’ve been sober 7 years and I can feel Doug’s lyrics in my soul. Thank you Doug for helping me make sense of this thing. I’m a better person for having heard your music.
Thank you for uploading this obscure piece of history. There are not many videos of Doug on the web. This is definitely a gem.
faster tempo on Found out about you is so good
nice song to drive at wide open highway on a lonely night
I pray his soul has found peace. Great to see him rocking his songs.
Thank you so much for this!!! I can guarantee that I was at this show! I miss the Sun Club(even if the ladies’ bathroom always flooded) and the Blossoms so much….such an amazing piece of history. Im sure I know the person recording it too lol….Just realized the House Quake sticker was still there on the Sun Club sign! And Tammy was an amazing bartender! Still have the sticker from her band, Spiny Norman lol
RIP Otis DelMonte ❤
Ohhhh, and since Im drunk lol….I remember when Robin debuted Allison Road at Long Wongs…he said it was his first song that he’d written. I loved it. Was super impressed. I can’t believe Sun Club and Long Wongs are gone….Mill Ave looks like shit now since Long Wongs is gone….
I loved HouseQuake!
Doug could play the phone book his solos in this are great
Doug's birthday was just the other day! wish i could have seen him perform
Wow this is amazing to see footage this good of Doug playing. Thank you very much.
Every time the camera pans in Doug’s direction, it fades out…seems really right. Here’s to him playing the shit out the Hey Jealousy . RIP River Otis
Am I crazy, or did a couple Gin Blossom shows that were posted around the time of this one get taken down? Not finding…apologies if it’s my mistake(most likely)
Wow. Early Blossoms rocked. This is an amazing document.
indeed it is amazing. these kids should have this video in the lib of congress. Laura, thanks for your persistence in getting this up to takes us back in time. love!.
I seriously hope Rockin Robin and Jess find a way to preserve this for GB nation. DVD, VHS, Kaleidoscope. Please. I’ll personally walk a copy over to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and rock the vote. Gin Blossoms Quality Product!
Brilliant Doug Hopkins spirit lives!! Rock on Zona.

Holy shit
Holy shit. Lost Horizons is a work of pure genius. That opening line…
This is just mesmerizing. Am I correct: Doug is the tall guy in the black leather coat? And if so, he absolutely shreds.I wonder if they had any idea at all that in 4 years they'd be playing all the late night shows, and soaring up the national charts, playing on sound systems that showcase their musicianship and Robin's voice. After Doug died, about the only people who could write with the intensity and the beauty of him were possibly Billy Joe Armstrong and the Gallaghers. Nothing else for the past 30 years.
Yes. Doug is the one playing next to Robin
That's some rock and roll!
It's amazing to see Jesse sing in front! I love his voice! And Rob is the best voice ever!❤
They look like they’re having a blast, looks so fun.
30 yeas ago today, Doug Hopkins took himself out of the World. ❤❤❤❤❤
Grim anniversary. Thanks for thr reminder
Wow, so glad this footage of Doug is available for all to see. What an incredible guitar player and songwriter, the solos captured in this show are amazing.
Hopkins amazing
This is great stuff!!! Great to see Doug!! Dynamic -- what a falling off was there . . . .
Aww no way thx for this uploads holy shitzo
Absolutely incredible. Thank you so much for uploading this!!! I think it's the only time I've ever seen video of Jesse on vocals from these days
Switching Robin to lead vocalist was the best decision they ever made
Yep
100 %
Thanks so much for sharing this with us. Doug was such an amazing musician such a tragic loss RIP
Interesting to hear Lost Horizons before they added the second bridge ("Maybe I could use you...").
So glad I found this. As a younger listener it’s amazing to see Doug. This era of the Arizona scene is engrained in my DNA. I hope to visit just a few states away someday and hear local stories about the fellas. Thanks to these comments I put together Doug is
River Otis. Always thought it was just a song from Dead Hot Workshop. They kick major ass as well.
Those were the days!
This is so cool. Earliest recording I've ever seen.
This is incredible! Can’t believe how many great songs they already had. Beautiful. I love this band so much. Thank you for sharing this with us.
You did that man dirty with the thumbnail
Monday acoustic night w/ the Ginn Blossoms singer and Brent (Dead Hot Workshop) were the best! Two solid songwriters with distinct voices. Tempe at its finest via the Sun Club circa 1988! Play some Slayer you... :)
Thank you for having/posting this!!!
Thank you for posting. Great stuff!
Doug is the centre. He is the leader here. The rest are just gauche kids lucky to be in his presence. The bass player though, he gets it.
Bill Leen on Bass, he and Doug were in the 10o'clock Scholars together. RIP Bill and Doug.
Bill is very much alive.
Bill is one of the greatest bass players of all time. NME is a masterclass in how to write the perfect bass line
Holy GOD this is unbelievable!
I can’t fucjing believe this I hope more tapes are uploaded
I can’t believe I found this. It’s getting me through a tough week that’s for sure. Pure gold!
Oh. My. God. So good.

I never realized how much "Found Out About You" sounds like Blue Oyster Cult.
Wongs 90-91-Great times lol Timothy(English lad!)

They closed with Hey Jealousy. I liked Jesse lead vocals on Cajun song. Great set by the boys.
Yo... 1989? I almost don't believe that date. If that's true, these guys were waaaay ahead of their time. From the music, to the dress, to the demeanor. Flannel was for dorks in the 80s. This has nothing in common with the 80s... AT ALL. Alice in Chains Facelift wasn't even out yet, let alone, Nirvana Nevermind. If you're old enough to remember what things were like back then, you'll realize this is nothing short of incredible. Doug Hopkins was the GOAT. Gin Blossoms were never the same without him.
The video came from a friend of the band who filmed it herself... so I believe the date. :-) enjoy
@@sacramentomusicarchive That's pretty awesome. And I did enjoy it. I went to ASU. Losing Doug Hopkins was one of the worst tragedies in music.
And now they are the most mellow live act
Incredible
Thank you Laura!
Truelly amazing ! Thank you,
So many good times.
Simplesmente sensacional um abraço do Brasil ao gin blossons
Obrigado. Saudações do Arizona.
Show incrível ,obrigada pela postagem , do Brasil passando aqui !
Amazing post. Doug was incredible talented
They just turned a portion of 8th Street into Allison Road!!!
And what a shame. As if a Robin song were the best remembrance of the GB legacy. As if anyone with a clue ever thought that.
Time capsule.
I would die for one of the shirts they were selling!
Thank you for this. December 5 is just around the corner which makes this upload far more significant.
Not to take anything away from this incredibly rare video upload, it is a pity, however, that the audio quality is poor. Im not sure how the audio is on the vhs tape but judging by the video, it should be okay. The video enhancement is very good but i think the audio quality degraded during the video enhancement. Im not an expert on video editing but i think the audio should have been taken out and processed/edited separately from the video and combined again after each has gone through the editing process.
This is my tape, the audio wasn’t great. I’m not in touch with the person who gave it to me so I don’t know where the original footage is.
I wonder if that was Doug asking about the tape
Did you by chance digitize the Sidewinders set as well? They were the band that Gin Blossoms were opening for at this show, and were fantastic in their own right.
Sorry, it is not on the tape.
Didn't they have to change their band name to The Sand Rubies due to legal issues after a couple of years?
かっこよすぎる
Does anyone know if there was ever a live version of Hey Jealousy where Robin sang "drink" instead of "think" like Doug had originally written?
Did you ever see them perform it that way? My understanding was always that Robin changed it before they ever performed it
Did you ever see them perform it that way? My understanding was always that Robin changed it before they ever performed it
Best band ever. Imho.
Wow can you imagine if everyone would have rallied to help out this guy Doug? Maybe it wouldn’t have made a difference but maybe it would’ve saved his life
This video is very much a study on how you put ART out into the public and let the people decide if it's good and if it evokes emotion and feeling. That's how it worked back then, the consumer decided. Thats how movies were, you dropped it int the theater and if it was a good film people told their friends and it got bogger and bigger. Now everything is just a marketing scheme. It's good because they tell you it is good not because it actually is good.
The best example and case study is "The Shawshank Redemption" . A word of mouth juggernaught because it was an amazing film, not because those who had a financial interest told us it was. It's hilarious watching the machine try to mpump shitty music and films just for the opening couple weeks until the word gets around it sucks. They gotta get that $ early before word gets around. The disney model essentially.
(also, there is one other video of Doug Hopkins on CZcams: czcams.com/video/2YL9YfmlhyU/video.html )
More than just one if you look hard

thank you the link
awesome. sad to think they voted I suppose secretly to kick the artist and founder of the band out. gordon geeko must have been in the crowd.
@@TheJackGonzo there's a lot of factors that went into it really. probably was the toughest choice they ever had to make.
Yep. Anyone who’s ever been in a band with a tortured drunk genius knows this.
What is that first song?
I can’t sleep
"I Can Sleep" off their first album "Dusted"
Can someone pls post a tracklist this is amazing
This is fantastic. They were a much harder rocking band early on, with Doug Hopkins, as this video shows. As far as the record company being "evil" for booting Hopkins out, try to remember that by the time of the first album's recording sessions, Hopkins' drinking made him non-functional (even according to the Metro Times account cited in the video description). Record companies aren't counselors or nannies. They hire bands to do a job. For all his brilliance, Hopkins was a liability. If he had been kept in the band and given extensive rehabilition treatment, yes, he may have recovered and the band may have been far greater, and recorded more good albums. Or... he could just as easily have flamed out and destroyed them. Record companies can't take chances like that.
I think you miss the point entirely:
Hopkins wrote the music and lyrics to Found Out About You and Hey Jealousy, their 2 best and most popular songs.
He also wrote Lost Horizons and Pieces of the Night, 2 other excellent songs.
In addition: He named them Gin Blossoms, which is a skin condition caused by drinking too much gin.
Also: He started the band with bassist Bill Leen. Many of the other members, including Robin Wilson, the lead singer, joined later.
Imagine if you started a band, named the band, wrote their best and most popular songs, then:
THE BAND KICKED YOU OUT.
It would be like if The E Street Band kicked out Bruce Springsteen.
Unfortunately, the biggest problem with letting someone else SING YOUR SONGS is that you can become expendable.
Doug ALWAYS felt that Robin’s voice suited his songs best, and he was right.
But, it’s too bad they weren’t strong enough to stand up and say: NO, without Doug, there is no Gin Blossoms.
But, I can’t judge them.
From what I’ve read, he was extremely tough to work with.
I just wish there could have been a better outcome.
I think they loved him, but didn’t know how to help him.
Perhaps, there was no way to help him.
@@wildmercuryfilmsThat’s always been my reading on it
I don’t imagine they really wanted to kick someone who was clearly one of the greatest songwriters of his generation out of the band
I think Doug would also have gone down as one of the greatest guitar players of his generation as well, had he stuck around longer. And they all knew that as well
But he was not functional as a professional musician. And they were quite young and reacting to industry pressure. And it’s something that they have all had to live with
No one is really in the right in the situation. Sometimes life can be tragic, and that’s just what this was
Hopkins didn’t like the record deal the band signed-the freedom he had to relinquish to producers.
The label used his unabashed alcoholism to force him out and forfeit his royalties, and then proceeded to profit immensely on his songs about being drunk drunk drunk.
I appreciate the video.
But man!!!
It sounds hideous.
☮
Too bad there wasn't a better audio source that could be synced to it.
This is high quality compared to the earlier live video, which is basically unlistenable.
