@@MaxAbramson3nah... Jag cd had no extra chips, all it did was give it more space/memory for games! No extra power or anything. @@orderofmagnitude-TPATP Correct. And that's why holding up the Jag for a few months to add the CD-ROM would've given them time to fix hardware issues and get better software tools out.

Considering when it released, it wasn't really that under-powered, and I'm not sure I'd say that was the main problem. I think the timing of the release was one of the problems, and I think they just didn't have enough money to invest in sufficient marketing and game development. If you're going to criticize the hardware, I think the controller design and build quality is one of the first things you should be starting with. I think the CD add on also suffered from some reliability issues, which was common for first gen CD console drives, including the Playstation.
It wasn’t underpowered, it was overly complicated. No one wanted to spend the time to program for its Tom and Jerry 32bit chips. Instead they just ported games to run using its Motorola 6800.
Coleco Vision was a little known b@d@ss console back in 1982 when it came out. For some reason not a lot of people knew about the Coleco Vision back then. I remember everytime one of my friends or my sister's friends came to our house and every one of them would always be completely blown away by how beautiful the graphics were on the CV because they were all brought up in households that had Atari consoles. If the CV company would have just stuck to what they did best(which was gaming consoles) instead of making the fatal decision of thinking the home PC was going to take over the 1980's home video game console wars. They decided to scrap any plans for a successor to the Coleco Vision and sunk all their money into a PC called "The Adam" which was a home PC with the CV successor built into the PC. Which was kinda cool but the average middle class family in the 1980's wasn't prepared to put up over $1,000-$1,500 for a home PC. Especially because 90% of the population then had no clue how to even turn on a home PC.
@@justin-bt7uh the Colecovision Adam came in two flavors. The first being a add-on, where you plugged the Colecovision into it and a stand alone. Both were loud AF due to the printer which housed the power supply. I had a friend in HS who had all the bells and whistles for a stand alone. A modem and a floppy drive. Plus CP/M OS Yet the Colecovision BASIC was terrible. You couldn't copy Apple II, IBM, or Commodore code out of the back of computer magazines. Even though the Z80 processor of the Colecovision products was basically a clone of the IBM 8080 CPU, with an extended instruction set. Colecovision BASIC sucked. I was 13 and had a part time job in a medical software company. I got to screw around with an Apple LISA. But the owners of the company took one look at the Adam and dismissed it as a kids toy. Without the floppy and modem with CP/M os that's exactly what it was. A toy. The graphics were insane. Even better on the Adam. Including Zaxxon and the Dragons Lair port. Sadly once I got a NES I never touched that Colecovision again.
Nice controller for tempest wish I never got rid of mine as I had the cd player add on and the cat box, just a shame there was little 3rd party software
AVP and Tempest 2000 were literally the best games of that entire console generation unfortunately. It's sad that more developers didn't stick with this hardware because the jaguar should've been amazing.
Yeah ,the intellivision did have special overlays for each game. I gave it away many years ago to a guy who isn't even my friend anymore. I still regret that.
My brother got one for $20 at a KB Toys back in 1999 it worked for a bit then stopped working unsure what happened with it, but wound up giving it to someone we went to school with! Unsure if he ever got it working or not! Came with a weird game called Cybermorph
The jaguar, much like the Dreamcast and 3do lacked 3rd party support. With the right games, God only knows the potential of these cool, underrated systems.
It had potential, the couple of shining stars of games were very impactful. Otherwise it was not underrated just underpowered and not as capable as it should have been.
Did the jaguar have a lot of old fps games on it? I saw doom, which id already heard there was a port of it there. If it had others like hexen i might have to pick one up. Im a sucker for those old shooters. My favorite system for them is the n64. The 3 prong controller was meant for those games. I have every shooter on the console. But i also wanna get a console that only used a dpad which had all of these games, and ran them decently. The snes versions of games like doom are not good. I know about one other jaguar shooter but i forget the name. It had ancient egypt like levels in it.
Definitely isn't the most underrated console from the 90s lol. 3DO easily had a better library. Even the FM Towns Marty did. Saturn if we wanna go slightly more mainstream but still overlooked.
I just realised what I must sound like when I speak highly of the Wii U. Yeah, in retrospect it was a great piece of hardware with a unique library, but imagine owning one at the time! Software draughts and the games they did have were unimpressive, a 64-bit system that struggled to compete with 16-bit systems, an awful controller, and competition that had every advantage. It's an interesting bit of kit, but let's be honest, it sucked, and I was there to see it suck.
Under developed and perhaps under appreciated. Underrated? Not so much. AVP was perhaps the closest game it had that was a must have. I had mine until the PlayStation dropped. Nearly every launch game was leaps and bounds above the Jaguar. Maybe if it had a bit more time in the oven and proper game development, it could have gave the Saturn something of a run for at least a slightly longer time than the Jag lasted.
Too expensive, too hard to program for, a horrible controller, not a lot of games, even fewer good games, it came too late to compete with the 4th Generation and too under powered to compete with the 5th generation (except the 3DO), and the non-functional CD add-on was about as useful as the 360s HD DVD add-on.
