    My favorite part of the Fortnite crossplay fiasco was that it was enabled "accidentally" by Epic. It was just suddenly live one day amidst all the debate about whether or not it was financially responsible or feasible to do without a ton of work. They demonstrated to everyone it was literally as simple as flipping a switch. Legendary "accident" right there

      The problem is mainly in terms of logistic of in-game currency here. Generally if crossplay is thought of early enough in a game conception, it is as simple as switching a few fuse and flipping the switch.
      Else you get warframe, who had to deal with a few years of developpement to untangle the code.

    The walled garden is "safer" than open competition, and investors love safety (and immediate returns).

    • @Gorgonops_SSF
      @Gorgonops_SSF Před měsícem +8

      Microsoft is also playing to investors, and open competition means you can put your product in front of more people irrespective of whether they're giving you dollars for hardware. See. PC/Xbox platform unification and selling once exclusives on PSN. You can construct a scenario of investor pleasing one way or the other. Eg. it's just pandering philosophies for the investor class so they don't get skittish and whatever aspect can backfire to these dynamics. Microsoft may dilute its Xbox brand to the point it's a PC accessory, but Sony could also torpedo its market dominance by walling itself off to emerging trend leaders, making its platform more and more insular, self-referential, and inflexible and thus susceptible to changing interests (and evolving global markets).
      How the deck of history is stacked will determine which outcome gets dealt (including any possibility not listed here). But no matter what happens, you'll have suits trying to narrate over what happens as good for shareholders.

    • @svenbtb
      @svenbtb Před měsícem +3

      That was my thought too. Sony's investors see that PlayStation consoles have been outselling Xbox consoles and they want to keep it that way. What they seem to be mistaken with though, is (they seem to be) thinking that they are competing with PC players, hence the PSN requirements to make sure they have some kind of control. They're probably thinking "after all, EA does it, Ubisoft does it, why not us?" Choosing to DELIST the game, though, that's still baffling. You'd think they'd want a viral game to sell as much as possible instead of limiting it so severely.

      @@svenbtbWell, yeah, everyone else is doing it, so why the hell wouldn't they? Their only mistake was turning off the requirement for the first few months. Sadly, delisting it means that people who refunded it can't get it back.

And on top of that, it adds up to literal hundreds of millions of people in those countries who basically can’t use a PlayStation… it’s like a technological meritocracy - it’s bizarre!
    Now Sony are claiming that they’ve backtracked - but haven’t in reality - to avoid the negative reviews. That’s all. It’s a smokescreen.

    • @MrGamelover23

      I think it's because the investors somehow care more if psn user number go up rather than game sale number go up. Also, they really never should have sold it in those countries it wasn't available in to begin with. They always intended it to be a requirement. Selena in those countries was just evil. But is Sony the only one with this problem? Or do all the other companies like Microsoft and EA and Ubisoft also lack availability in over 170 countries?

      Every year I don't have Xbox Live or PlayStation Plus or Nintendo Online... Well it used to be simple, $60 + $60 + $20 = $140 I'm not spending every year. • @OfficialDJSoru
      @OfficialDJSoru Před měsícem

      @@zachweyrauch2988 Essentially, as MJC said, yeah, PC has a higher upfront cost, but that's cause none of the companies that sell you the parts/whole computer can sell at a loss cause they got no way of making the money back off of you with subscriptions or sales cuts on the games you buy (unlike console manufacturers)
      On the other hand, If you're not a desperate, hype train fanatic, here's where you're gonna get back the money you spent. You can bet any new game you see released will start having 50% discounts a year after their release, if not higher discounts, or the game will be in a bundle for 20% or less than it's full price. Just wishlist games like crazy and prioritize those with steep discounts that vibe with you at the moment you're interested in spending cash in a game. Before you know it, by the time you need a graphics card update to keep up with the most demanding games you're probably with a library 10x larger than the one from the console and the money you saved by buying at those discounts can go for future upgrades.
      The key is buying smart and "picking your battles" (only upgrading when you really need it and only the components that matter at the time)

    • @fuzzydude64
      @fuzzydude64 Před měsícem +12

      Not op but for me, I've saved so much money with a PC from switching during the beginning of the current console gen.
      I didn't spend $500+ for a PS5 (the + being pandemic prices). Didn't spend that plus $60-70 per game for the 2 or 3 games on it I wanted to play only for it to collect dust afterwards.
      Frequent game sales and discounts on platforms like Steam (with a great, robust return policy too, if I got a bad game). Plus I can do tons of other stuff with it; CZcams, streaming, emulating games you can't buy anymore, shopping, etc. I own a ton of consoles but the last I bought was the Switch in 2018.
      PC still may not be for everyone, as it does generally have a higher entry cost, but that gap gets smaller every year. It's a long run thing.

      Sony continues to stick with largely the same strategy that worked for them back with the PSX: put out a game with greater processing power, broader graphics options, and more storage than your competition and the devs will come running. Meanwhile, Nintendo has demonstrated a capacity to adapt and overcome not by trying to out-tech Sony and Microsoft (where MS, by the by, has mainly been competing with Sony by being the Pepsi to their Coke, i.e. doing the same thing but less well) but by securing a particular domain of gaming IPs and stable dev relations that make them immutable. Sony and Microsoft might be the hares who can run the whole race backwards and forwards blindfolded, but Nintendo is the tortoise that will reliably finish the race, which you can't guarantee for the other two.
      And now that we seem to have hit a ceiling on processing power and graphics fidelity that even developers are having trouble breaking past, Sony's domain is starting to show some cracks in the margins. I don't quite know how it's all going to go, but I think you're right that Sony's position is not as secure as they think it is, and their console division end up going the way of Sega if they don't find a way to control the landscape.

I thought a big appeal to a big company like that would be to vaccum clean the consumers wallets. But with Sony i just dont know. • @RunePonyRamblings
      @RunePonyRamblings Před měsícem +14

      Sony is stuck in an awkward middle-ground between Nintendo and Microsoft. Unlike Nintendo, their development costs are too high to maintain profit/growth with just their own platform's audience. But unlike Microsoft, that platform _is_ still incredibly successful, too successful to risk devaluing by going multiplat (even just PC).
      So Sony _has_ to release games on PC to expand their audience, but at the same time they have be very selective about what they release so they can still entice people to buy/stay on PlayStation. So far their strategy has been to port their games about 2-3 years after the console release (and FWIW, it's not "crumbs", they've ported most of their big games). I imagine they'll continue following this strategy, along with more cross-platform multiplayer releases.
      I'm most curious to see what Sony's relationship with third-party exclusives is going to be. FF7 Rebirth would seem to indicate that it's no longer sustainable at the AAA level, so I predict we'll see fewer 3P exclusives from major publishers, and more deals with flashier AA games like Stellar Blade.

      Sony is going to continue the way they are doing it now, just because it works. Releasing old exclusives in steam is just a way of profiting from a segment of players that dont value their exclusives enough to get into their ecosystem (that is why they release it so many years in advance, if they did simultaneous releases, or even a year later release, why would a pc gamer get a ps5 instead of waiting) while creating a new revenue stream.

    • @RunePonyRamblings
      @RunePonyRamblings Před měsícem

      @@brandonbigsby2557 Not exactly. Microsoft's problem is that they thought they could buy their way into success, but they don't know how to manage the studios they buy, so those studios struggle to put out system-selling exclusives, so Microsoft just buys _more_ studios, and now they're having an Embracer moment and have to pay the piper, apparently by more-or-less becoming Activision themselves.
      Sony's problem is that they've become the biggest fish in a shrinking pond. They've maxed-out their marketshare and their development costs are getting out of control. But anything they could do to expand their market risks undermining the very business model that brought them to the top in the first place.

Better, given the goal, to kick the people who can't sign up for PSN to make room for people who can.

    I'm surprised you didn't mention (maybe it was recorded sooner?) the fact that Squeenix just announced it's going to cross-platform, when it used to be a PS-exclusive shop.

    Just made me think of the joke I heard about Target: Their whole business model is charging a bit extra for the people that are willing to pay it so they don't have to go to Walmart. We're not marking up prices out of greed, its a feature. We're keeping out the riff-raff.

    Man these videos are so damn good. Seriously, it's really hard to tell which channel is my favorite on Second Wind.
    Also, this whole Sony situation is what you get when you push aside the developers, the writers, the artists, and everyone else who actually builds the games and put the bean counters in charge. Late-stage capitalism ruins everything, and now it's here for your video games and other forms of entertainment media.

    A point that's occurred to me also is that, with PC, Sony also loses a major source of revenue that they guarantee with Helldivers 2 on PS5: Playstation Plus.
    Live service games for them provide two-fold revenue: once for the game itself and another for every person paying for PS Plus to play the game. They know that there's no way to get PS Plus into the PC market. PC players are too used to guaranteed internet. So from their perspective, until they can squeeze more money out of players by implementing a PS Plus alternative for PC, they should probably hold off on fully committing to PC releases.
    Maybe I'm way off base, but I think it's something to chew on.

    I have a PS5. I bought it for the single player exclusives. I don’t have PS+, or whatever they’re calling their “play with real people” package these days. I think that Sony is aware that there’s a lot of people like me out there, and so far have been fairly cautious in pushing games as a service. And when they do, they very much want everything in house. It’s a very conservative mindset, and I think that it works for anyone who is happy puttering around in their walled garden.

    I think you might be looking at an evolutionary aspect. The pressure for change only occurs when there is a contrasting negative pressure to drive it. Sadly evolution (the social form included) is rarely proactive.
    I also wonder if the escalating xenophobia ramping up in Japan (same as many other countries) encouraged the soloist style or if that parallel is merely coincidence.

    Killing PlayStation London felt like a final admission that from now on they are only going to make versions of the same game over and over. No shade on Last of US, God of War or Horizon (all of which i played) but PS used to do the fun stuff in-between the blockbusters. All the weird smaller games that made it interesting. I know the whole market is going that way, Xbox too after the latest pivot, but it feels like they've all abandoned the middle ground. Indies are great for so many things but the AA space was vibrant and colorful and could take risks. I miss that place.
    I shouldn't have to stick this disclaimer on every post but i own (or usually do) all the different consoles and PC. I have no dog in a trad boring console fight.

    I think the "Sony Pony" thing comes from way back when My Little Pony was big. It's basically putting people who like Sony in the same category as the guys who liked that show. I think.

    Had PS1, 2, 3, and 4, however with the initial stock limitation and price gouging, and imo a lack of first party titles, never felt compelled to get the PS5 just yet. Was going to comment on the PS3/PSN smaller titles but seems at least three were games I fondly remember courtesy of Japan Studios, The Last Guy, Trash Panic and Echochrome
