What is alpha arbutin
Alpha Arbutin is Extracted from plants such as bearberries, blueberries, and cranberries, and its a safe skin brightening ingredient which helps to fade scars and pigmentation left behind by two things, breakouts and sun damage.
Alpha Arbutin vs Hydroquinone
Alpha arbutin is frequently marketed as a safer alternative to hydroquinone, which you all know has been banned in most countries and has been getting a lot of controversy. It has similar results in brightening skin but without the dangerous bleaching process that hydroquinone has. But because alpha arbutin is still a derivative of hydroquinone, It works by slowly releasing hydroquinone over time, inhibiting tyrosinase, which is the key enzyme responsible for the production of melanin, or pigment, in the skin. To put it simple, less tyrosinase, means less pigment, which means less discoloration and dark spots. And on top of that: Alpha arbutin is also known to have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
Is alpha arbutin safe
But you might be starting to think, well if it releases hydroquinone: doesnt it still have all the same side effects? Thats an excellent question. The short answer is no. Because Alpha arbutin releases the hydroquinone slowly, the skin isn't exposed to too much of it all at once. Which is awesome right, because, This reduces the chances of those side effects. But if you are pregnant or planning to be pregnant, since it does release hydroquinone, I would skip it as it would not be deemed safe in pregnancy.
When to use alpha arbutin
If youre not pregnant, and you are struggling to fade away those dark spots, acne scars, and melasma, and used to be on hydroquinone and cant find it anywhere because of the ban, alpha arbutin may be a great alternative. Especially if you have a darker skin tone, which is more prone to hyperpigmentation and youve tried every other product out there and found no luck. Alpha arbutin may in fact work for you. But what if i have lets say, sensitive skin
How to use alpha arbutin
Lets talk about how to incorporate it into your skincare routine. The first question Ill probably get is, does it interact well with my other products. And to answer that: Alpha arbutin plays really well with your other products. So you can easily work it into your existing routine. Now: you want to Follow the directions of the particular product you pick, but, generally speaking, you'll want to apply it twice daily on clean, dry skin for maximum results before your moisturizer. And To boost its benefits before giving up on it, lets say youve tried it for a month or two and havent seen any good news, apply it alongside your vitamin C, azelaic acid, kojic acid or niacinamide.

I so enjoyed this video!! For some reason, my skin will not tolerate azelaic acid. It makes my skin dry and causes small bumps/irritation. So I ordered The Ordinary's Alpha Arbutin, the one you recommended. I have been using twice a day for over a month, and I am already seeing amazing results! I really enjoy your videos, there’s so much good informations. I ordered an Alpha-Arbutin bottle from The Ordinary company and it was already brownish when opening the box.The customer service told me that is an ingredient in the formulation that doesn’t tolerate heat but the stability and the effectiveness are not compromised and to use it without any risks.I have a doubt about that. Can you give me your opinion because I don’t dare to use it on my skin. Maybe it’s not that bad but sending altered products to customer and tell them that is ok to use it like this…..

Thank you for your question! They can either be used together or can be used either in the morning & evening. If you are applying on alternative days already, stick to that for now as you mentioned you have acne prone skin and you dont want to disrupt the cycle you started.

Hi thanks for your question. It may be used together at night, however allow the AA to absorb first. Adapalene should be used last. One thing to keep in mind is the possibility of irritation with both. It may be difficult to gauge whether or not it is isolated to just the ‘differin purge’ or the intolerance to multiple actives. To mitigate the concern, AA can be used in the morning. Let me know what your thoughts are.

could I get your advice on what to do when you've over exfoliated with glycolic acid? I used the ordinary's 7% glycolic acid carelessly to brighten my elbows but then it ended up making them darker with pigmentation, it seems that poc or those with tanner skin are more sensitive to hyperpigmentation from over exfoliation
Over exfoliation can be detrimental for darker skin tones as the possibility of unwanted hyperpigmentation is quite higher. It is further caused by irritation and inflammation from overdoing it. First thing I would do is get back to a gentle skincare routine, put a pause on your actives, and focus on barrier repair ingredients.

Which is better in treating hyperpigmentation, DISCOLORATION, uneven Skin tone, alpha arbutin or mandelic acid?
Alpha arbutin is a skin brightener that helps decrease hyperpigmentation. Mandelic acid is a very gentle alpha hydroxy acid (works like glycolic acid and lactic acid) that exfoliates dead skin cells.
Both AA and MA help decrease hyperpigmentation but they target it differently.
