I think this is an analogy of how we treat death. A lot of the comments are focusing on the smell, or on how are the people not freaking out. The giant could be any one of us, and this is probably how strangers would treat your own dead body.

The Drowned Giant was originally a short story by JG Ballard, the same person who wrote "High Rise" (made into a 2015 film with Tom Hiddleston), and "The Drowned World".
It is about human reaction to death and isn't really supposed to reflect the real world at all because it's about human psychology and our reaction to death.

This is absolutely devastating and heartbreaking. This giant's body was completely disrespected all the way. People climbing and jumping on the body, the graffiti and slurs drawn on him, his body being completely dismembered and amputated and then his bones and body parts displayed everywhere around the town. It's honestly really disgusting and shameful. If I was the main guy I would've stepped in and tried to save the body. No way in hell will I let a creature's body be disrespected like that. We wouldn't let beached whales be treated that way. I wouldn't let the same thing for a mythological creature.
Also it took me minutes into the video to realize that this is entirely animation. Obviously I knew the Giant is animated but the other humans looked so life like that it fooled me. The animations is really good.

If this happened in real life, there is no way that there would be just one scientist that is assigned to this and to just 'keep tabs on it'. The entire beach would be sectioned off and quarantined and there would be an entire camp of scientists and technicians working on studying the giant and collecting tissue samples 24/7. Eventually the body would get chopped up and the parts taken away to a more established facility where they'd likely preserve them for further study.

To understand the movie you can't take it too literally, the giant is actually a washed up whale. Of course we wouldn't treat an actual giant like this but when it's just a whale, sure.
I think that the reason a whale is portrayed as a human, is because we see through Steven's point of view, to him this magnificent beast is worth as much, if not more than the humans. So he just thinks of it as a human, like him, instead of a washed up whale.

The graffiti represents how people treated him as a commodity, it's like social media hate-posts. personally, this speaks to us on a deeper level, like Adam mentioned one day we will pass away, perhaps if we made some good connections in some people's memories and in their stories our existence may live on. The pics, the media that we chose, the songs that we liked, the things that we did in our own past times, that also is experienced by the most closest to us, some friends, parents and maybe siblings and if possible some relatives, maybe on the most deepest levels, only 10 people know us throughout our lives. whether it's our parents, spouse, children and friends and no one else beyond. with our passing, remains our memories and the stories of ours, and that too will wither away, with time as our own children, their children and subsequently our traces vanish off of the earth in the long run, maybe somehow a pic of ours smiling chilling with the boys at the beach is found at the beach 100 years later buried but now found. and the one that finds it will wonder about that pic, the people in the pic that lived, before it becomes some part of some museum that preserves it for the next generation to visit and look at the lives lived by. So, what is the point of living such a life where u r only living. perhaps the motive of life is to still doing all these things, with and to all these people, and perhaps to do it so well, that it reaches most people, that it helps most of them, and maybe lives on, to create and expedite something, a legacy that lives and improves for the people. that is itself a very symbol of what we have been, us as humans. Our humanity.

It saddens me how instead of being respectful of someone that passed away people graffiti, amputate, and play on it. That's just sick and demonic honestly. Other then that I dont think something as huge as this in real life would have been a trend that just faded away so quickly. There would be so many things people would be trying to discover and things we would be realizing. It would probably start a panic attack as well for many people as well. I remember hearing of how someone hacked into a radio section and pretended there would be an alien invasion, you had many people killing themselves and their family members.
