    Btw my headcanon here is that Miss Willoughby and Mrs. Crocombe are twins separated at birth. Daughters of one of the maids, Miss Willoughby was taken in by friends of the family who were childless. They have crossed paths in comical ways many times but never are able to actually see one another, and since the help is not thought of much, no one has ever noticed the resemblance. Only the lady of the house actually knows about that heartbreaking night so many years ago...

      Ah, a well developed imagination, Brew. There may exist, perhaps, the probability that there is a triplet to the two, too...she inhabits a forgotten garret in the gatehouse and in her solitary existence she writes the tomes that have created the world of Mrs. Willoughby and Crocombe, as well as the universe in which you and I imagine we dwell....[shudder]...YOU are that triplet, aren't you, Witch's Brew?

      In some ways, side saddle is MORE secure. Clamping the two heads between your legs is much easier than trying to grip the sides of an "aside" saddle, since you are actually wrapping your upper leg around the post, and lower leg under another. The down side is that if you DO come off, you are in less control of your fall, and more likely to land badly.

    • @priorattire
      @priorattire Pƙed 6 lety +50

      not true - actually, the pommels do the balancing for you. It is more difficult to fall off ( though not impossible...), and your seat is much more secure over the jumps, going down, or when the horse spooks to the side. I ride both, and feel much more secure aside!

    • @priorattire
      @priorattire Pƙed 6 lety +24

      yes - a muscle pain if you havent done it before. you will feel your first lesson in your core muscles and the glutes, but once the muscles are strenghtened, it is fine - just like with any other sports. just like the lower back muscles or inner tights for astride. also, corsets help a lot with lower back anyway....

Be impressed people, be VERY impressed. It’s not that easy to ride side saddle, and the saddles themselves are more expensive then standard saddles.

      I wish I was a seamstress I think the question was more about how to get your right leg over the pommel. I can't figure that out either with all that fabric covering the legs.

    • @Holyfiremolotov
      @Holyfiremolotov Pƙed 6 lety +28

      If you're getting on the horse from the left side (and the pommel is on the left side of the saddle, like in the video. I'm saying left because if you stood behind the horse, it would be on the left), the right leg, which would normally swing over the other side of your horse, rests over the fixed head, which is the bigger pommel at the top. You squeeze this with the underside of the right thigh. Then, the other leg rests under the leaping pommel (the smaller, slightly curved and thinner pommel) and you squeeze it with the upper left thigh. The dress has more fabric in the sides to enable the woman riding the horse to lift that right leg without having to lift all her skirts up. Essentially, they sit on the back portion of theirs skirts and the front portion covers the pommel. When mounting up, they sit behind the pommel and lift the right leg over it once mounted. This is why they have more fabric in their riding skirts, to enable them to lift that right leg without lifting their skirt and showing off their legs because without it, they'd be sitting on all the fabric and not be able to lift the leg over the pommel. Dunno if that helps all! >__

      @melissasaint3283 Pƙed 6 lety +3

      Holyfiremolotov It does! I cant help but wonder, since the two legs are using totally different muscles...if a lady was very fond of riding, would this eventually make her thighs have a totally different muscles that are moat developed? What an odd thought

    • @warriormaiden9829
      @warriormaiden9829 Pƙed 6 lety +7

      nessagirl1911 Holyfiremolotov
      There's two styles of mounting: mount astride, then swing your leg over (demonstrated by the gal in the video titled 'Rescue Pony Shanly is Side Saddle Star') and an assisted mount. For the full skirts, it requires an assisted mount. But if you have a later habit, they have an "apron" that buttons in the back, allowing freedom of movement for either mounting style. Looked something like this pic: i.pinimg.com/originals/e6/d1/4b/e6d14b81747f215c8e386377b7efcc98.jpg
      The apron had a panel in the back that was long enough to sit on while riding so others wouldn't see the trousers. When out of the saddle, the apron wrapped all the way around to form a skirt that mimicked the straighter skirt styles of the time. Hope that helps! :)

    Side saddle's not actually as difficult as it looks, it's just like sitting up with one leg crossed over the other. You just have to remember to keep your pelvis facing directly forward so you don't twist your back and unbalance the horse. The seat is more cushioned than a normal saddle so it's actually pretty comfy! And harder to fall off.

    To those complaining about this being unsafe. I must educate you. This is MUCH safer than riding astride and It’s actually much more secure than riding astride. I’ve ridden, Western and English and I’ve ridden both astride and aside in each style. Riding sidesaddle afforded me much more confidence and security in the saddle thanks to the pommels! As a man I currently ride only aside if I have a choice. I have had to have back surgery and I just can’t take the chance of being thrown out of the saddle so riding sidesaddle with the pommels makes the most sense. Riding astride the only thing that keeps you in the saddle is your thighs on the sides of the animal. Riding aside you have the pommels to grip onto which are attached to the saddle which is then strapped to the horse. Anyone saying that sidesaddles are unsafe are severely ignorant or willfully stupid.

      Audley End (where this is filmed) has a dedicated group who show a lot of side saddle riding - Victorian style. There are also "modern" side saddle groups as part of the horse enthusiasts community. Its still very much an interest. It was at the turn of the century (19th to 20th) that women were more commonly starting to ride astride as a matter of course, but its also likely that women have been riding astride for centuries anyway - if one is a working woman and needs to ride for some reason (eg to take ones horse with produce to market - easier to ride and have baskets attached that to attach to a cart.)

      When Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth rode in the Trooping of the Colour, she rode sidesaddle. www.gettyimages.com/photos/queen-elizabeth-ii-trooping-the-colour-1981?mediatype=photography&phrase=queen%20elizabeth%20ii%20trooping%20the%20colour%201981&sort=mostpopular
      These days, she only rides privately and astride. She rides in a carriage at the Trooping.

    Maybe I am wrong but it really doesn't look comfortable. I also can't imagine it is good for the spine to experience all the impact while sitting at such an odd angle.
