Most Loved man in Seventies and Eighties Country Music. No one ever said a negative word about Charly Pride.i would compare him to Karen Carpenter or Jimmy Buffet in terms of the unbelievable amount of love and positive vibes between this man and the public.
“Roll on Mississippi” and “Is Anybody Going to San Antone?” and “All I Have to Offer You is Me” are three more hits by Charley.
Everyone liked Country Charlie Pride. Even my strongly racist grandfather liked Country Charlie Pride.

Not always true they never showed his face on his first albums. He won them with his voice before they found out he was black. Everyone loved him but they still wouldn't let him walk into the club through the front door

I grew up listening to Charlie Pride. My mama loved him. Never even thought about him being black. He was just a great country singer. Sadly, he died in 2020 shortly after receiving the CMA Lifetime Achievement Award.

That is exactly how I feel. I was born in 1969 and have listened to him all my life. My father is Mexican and my mother white American and no one ever said a word about him. I never even thought of him being black, he was just a GREAT country singer.

Charlie did have things to deal with for sure. there were many stations that refused to play his music because he was black but the funny thing was alot of the music fans didn't know he was because you can't see color on the radio and they kept asking for him to be played. later on when Charlie won a major award and Loretta Lynn was the presenter, the TV people told her to announce his win and then step back away from him and let him come get the award, her response was , Ain't nobody gponna tell me where I have to stand and when Charlie came on stage she went up and presented the award to him and gave him a big hug on national TV lol Charlie was well respected among the musicians and loved by the fans

NO ONE knew he was a black man for many months after his first record was ever played, until he was brought out before a crowd at the Grand Ole Opra and the crowd gave him a big welcome!

As a little girl in the 60's-70's Charlie Pride was a staple on our radio. Always loved his music. We didn't think of him as a "black artist", we just loved his music. Oh, and "love her like the devil" means love her a lot, not literally "the devil".

Loretta Lynn presented Charlie with a Living Legend Award in 1997. She was instructed to only shake his hand. Being the Loretta we know and love who does what she thinks is right, she gave him a kiss and a big hug.

Charlie was a unicorn. The only black man in country music back then. He had a terrific voice and a kind and good natured personality. I always respected the man for being tenacious enough to make a living in a very 'white' line of work. I'm so glad you are giving him some air time, and even more importantly, sharing your experience of him and his talent.
I'm 37 years old and grew up in rural South Dakota. I didn't meet a black person until I joined the Army, but this is the song my Dad sang to me at bed time when I was a little boy. Charlie Pride is country music.
When he first came out there were people that didn't originally go to his shows because of race but in the end he got overwhelming support. I have listened to him for my whole life. I'm 63

I'm 66 and from Oakland CA. My uncle was from Arkansas and was in the Navy when he met my mothers sister and stayed in California when he got out of the Navy in the mid 60's.
He was Cherokee and dressed like a cowboy and loved country music and exposed me to country music. Turned me on to Charlie Pride and all the old time country music stars in the early 70's.
Loretta Lynn was presenting an award once that Charlie was nominated for. She was told that if he won she was to take a step back away from him to avoid being too close to him. He did win, & instead of stepping away, she hugged him. Pure class.

Listening on the Radio as a kid, we never knew the race of the musicians and bands we just loved the music. It was truly a meritocracy of their skill and Charlie has such a wonderfully masculine voice with gentleness, kindness, and love too! That is a real man.
If you were able to view the covers of Mr Pride’s first few albums he was not featured. It was all about his music. America fell in love with his smooth tones long before they knew the color of his skin.
Even so he faced racism and bigotry throughout his career. He persevered to become one of the most well respected and beloved legends of country music.
Trivia... he started out playing professional baseball. He was very well respected in the country industry. Look up "Loretta Lynn surprises Charlie Pride". He was voted entertainer of the year. 1971. And recieved a Grammy for Best male vocalist in country music in 1972
He was so HUMBLED and SURPRISED. Always smiling. He is one of 3 African-American that is a member of the Grand Ole Opry. The others are DeFord Bailey and Darius Rucker

I grew up from where Charley Pride was born and raised in Mark Mississippi. I lived about 10 miles away. I’m not for sure what his mom done but his dad I believe I was a young man at this time I believe that his dad was A policeman I met him a couple times when he came home to visit one of the most down-to-earth guys you’ll ever meet in your life very well spoken kind and just all around good guy and his dad was too and that is still one of my favorite songs, but that was over 60 years ago

charlie pride's biggest hits after Kiss an Anger were "kaw liga - wooden indian" which had some real voice effects, and "is anybody going to San Antone" . I loved them all.

The man doing the introduction is Marty Stuart, from Philadelphia, MS, and a Choctaw Indian. He dropped out of school when he was around 14 to play in bluegrass legend Lester Flatt's band. Stuart later led Johnny Cash's band. He is one of the best guitar and mandolin pickers in the business, and a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame.
Is he actually Choctaw or just has a bit from back somewhere in his ancestry? I know he has a great affinity form the Choctaw people featuring and highlighting them where he can. I also have family ties to his hometown and know it was even claimed for years in my family we had some Choctaw. DNA test provided otherwise. PS - if you like Marty Stuart the station RFD TV has his program every Saturday evening.
I'm old enough, and country enough, to remember that we had listened to Charlie Pride often on the AM radio and were all astonished to find out he was black. It was a pretty well kept secret when he first started out. Not so much that it was hidden, so much as it wasn't "advertised". Anyway, it didn't change anyone's opinion of him, at least not anyone I knew in Tn. But to your point, I totally think the vast majority of the "racist" stuff is strictly to keep the people divided and therefore, made up, staged, or outright lied about by the press.
My parents listened to Charlie Pride when I was young. I just loved his music. I’m 56 now, and still play his songs.
I'm 61 years old and was raised by a black nanny from birth till I was 6 years old my dad worked for GE and got transferred and she couldn't go with us and I cried like a baby and was mad at my dad for a long time l loved that woman with all my heart I was born in the 1960's and my hole life I've never seen color

We grew up listing to Charlie Pride, and many other similar singers. Our parents did not even think of racism, nor did we. I am a white 59 year old woman who grew in the suburbs of Central NY. Manufactured racism did not exist. What they have done to our country, and its people is despicable.

Charlie Pride was one of my mother's favorites and since i am 70 years old that was quite a while ago! About 1964 or so. I loved to listen to my mom's country music, my favorite was Marty Robbins. But only when she wasn't home. I would never tell anyone because i was embarrassed. I only listened to rock 'n' roll and I didn't want anyone to think I wasn't cool!

Back in that day it was unusual for a country singer be black. One of my favorite stories about Charlie is that a Texas woman loved his music but wouldn't believe he was Black. Finally he did a concert close to her and her friend who had been trying to convince her of his ethnicity took her to his concert. When he came out and started singing you could hear her throughout the building yelling "It's True, It's True"!!
As. A white man listening to Charlie pride growing up I would tell me friends about Charlie pride and they didn't want to believe a black man was singing country music. So I just kept it to myself. Even when someone would say why ain't there no black people in country. Almost like I was protecting someone from trying to make fun of him. That's how good he was to me .

He has a lot of hits! My favorite is “You’re So Good When Your Bad” and “Roll On Mississippi.” You’re So Good When Your Bad was featured on the tv show Designing Women in the episode Reservations For Eight. It was so perfect for that episode and Charley sounded so so good as usual! ❤❤❤

Charlie Pride was another one of the old time greats. My dad had country on all the time. SO i grew up on Charlie Pride, Loretta Lynn, George Jones, and Charlie Pride just to name a few. I was still into rap, rock and metal. I love all kinds of music. Love going back to all this music and watching you discover this.

There is a clip of charlie Pride receiving his Living Legend Award from Loretta Lynn, you should watch it, seriously, it always brings a tear to my eye. There was so much whoopin and hollerin at the awards show and you can tell he was much loved. Standing ovation for him. he was wonderful.
My Mother worked at Brookhaven hospital in Farmers Branch/Dallas in the 1970’s. She met Charley Pride a few times over the years and said he was such a nice person. She was definitely a fan of his singing and him personally.
My mom and step dad went to see him live in Beaumont Texas back in the early 70's or late 60's. My stepdad took him a drink up on stage and shook his hand! Wonderful man! I have listened to his music for decades!!!
I grew up with him singing country and I couldn't understand how that black guy several years ago said country wouldn't let blacks sing country. WHAT?????? SOMEONE JUST WANTED TO STIR THE POT WITH LIES.

The late Charlie Pride is a legend. I once saw an interview with him on TV - he grew up as one of a bunch of children of a share-cropper (and later bought the man's property). Some of his other hit songs were "Crystal Chandelier", "Does My Ring Hurt Your Finger" & "Is Anybody Goin' to San Anton".
He said devil because he would not get airplay if he said love her like Hell. Fun fact, Charley played pro baseball for St Louis, if I remember right.

Was friends with his daughter back in the 80s. He was in town and she introduced me to him. Got to see him in concert just a few years ago. Maybe 2019. He put on a great show.
Hank snow was my cousin he was half Canadian and use to come to stewiake Nova Scotia Canada in the summer and hang out with my Papa Jack and he wrote a song called Jack and was about my Papa
When he was invited to the Opry, which was the pinnacle for a country artist, they didn't know he was black until he walked out on the stage. But you know, for the most part, skin color is not that big a deal in country and rock genres. Both country and rock have roots in the blues, which is mostly the province of black men. I'm sure it wasn't all smiles and rainbows, the times being what they were, but most of that resistance came from the system, not from the other musicians and not from the people. Musicians don't care about anything but whether or not you can play the music or sing the songs. And white people, for the most part, don't care as long as the music's good. I remember when Living Color came out with Cult of Personality, someone would be like, did you know they're black? And everyone else would be like, cool, they're black.

Charlie came on the scene when this country was not divided by the crap that divides us today, he came in at the perfect time! My mother had all of his 8-track tapes and albums! Check the song "Kawliga" if you want to see his true range! His version is the best there is!
