      Why should it be likely that she won‘t find a job? According to the National Center for Educational Statistics, the average employment rate of bachelor’s degree holder in communications is 3.3 which is still above average (2.9) and higher than many fields in STEM or Engineering. This preception many people have that a communications degree won‘t get you a job is just wrong especially if your school has a good communication program which teaches you specific fields of communication which are useful on the job market (like business communication or journalism). Not everybody can major in finance.

    I have a journalism degree. I am a senior marketing content writer for a software-as-a-service company. I report to a product marketing manager and I support him by writing blogs, whitepapers and ebooks about the specific products he manages. I've done this type of work for three different companies over the last 12 years and find it a very enjoyable position. I also have a side hustle where I do market research for one of my former employers finding suitable prospective clients they can contact. I had a rough start to my career, but now that I'm settled in and have an array of skills to show employers, it's been a good ride. I have a job that I enjoy and that pays more than enough for me to live comfortably. If I had to do it all over again, the only thing I'd change is that I'd make marketing my minor. But after the first few years, no one looks at your degree anymore. Instead they care more about your experience.

    • @firebird6522
      @firebird6522 Před rokem

      @@hamzakhanofficial11 You're studying journalism but don't know what skills it will provide? OK. Well, I can help you out.
      For one, journalism teaches you how to write in an easy-to-understand way. That's a very valuable skill that is in demand. Not in and of itself, but every employer wants someone who can communicate clearly and concisely and says so in every job description. Journalism majors do that. One word of advice: There is a BIG difference between writing journalism style and scholarly style. I wrote a term paper in college in the journalism style (short sentences, short paragraphs, few big words, inverted pyramid, etc.) and the prof freaked out. Guess the dude had never read a newspaper before.
      Second, it teaches you how to gather and organize information in a very specific way so that the most important stuff is at the beginning (the inverted pyramid). Again, in a different manner than scholarly works, so be careful applying journalism organization to a term paper.
      Journalism also teaches you how to ask questions and listen. A good reporter lets the person he or she is talking to tell the story. The reporter simply asks the questions and directs the conversation. A good reporter never injects himself into the story. Unfortunately, there are a lot of bad reporters out there now who practice advocacy journalism, which teaches the reporter is the story. Stay away from that crap. Knowing how to ask questions and listen is an awesome skill to have when doing market research and will give you a definite edge over others.
      When you combine journalism and marketing, it teaches you how to come up with a targeted message to effectively reach and influence a narrow group of people. That's what I do as a marketing communications professional today. Hope this helps you and good luck.

      I’m thinking of doing communication as well..( well I already switched out all my classes to communication and got rid of psychology), but I also asked my bro for advice and he kept saying “communication is a useless degree, you don’t need it for communication. You can just communicate without a degree” but due to his ignorance, I didn’t fold. But, I’m currently almost transferring soon and “minor” is when I go university and do that particular major right? Like you said you minor in marketing but how does that work. Is it like double major?

    • @calvinraab8798
      @calvinraab8798  Před 4 lety +22

      In my opinion being in a major that is very general is not necessarily a bad thing if you have a specific skillset or job in mind. So for instance, for me, I am an economics major which is a very general major, however, I am very focused on the mortgage industry so I am a general major but I have a narrow focus on something I am passionate about. It all comes down to eventually focusing in on a valuable skillset doesn't matter how general the major is if you have specific job in mind. Sometimes a general major is good if you aren't too sure what you want but you should always be looking to find a rare and valuable skill to focus in on to differentiate yourself from your peers in the job market. Best of luck to you :)

I love interior design and one day I would like to write in a magazine like AD I would also like to have my furniture store but before that I kinda want to write stories about people around the world and about animals, make documentaries etc... do you recommend me study communications or design? Sorry if my English is not good I speak Spanish 🙏🏻🙏🏻

      You should major in Communications or Journalism but also take some business classes as well! You don't need to major in business if you don't want to but having those business classes under you will definitely give you insight on what it takes to start and run a business. I am currently double majoring in Communications and Business Admin myself.

      Do you have a specific question about that major? That major is very much so in line with a more "standard" communication major and these jobs that I talk about in this video would be open to both majors.

      Yes, you can certainly head towards those fields with communications, but for any of the jobs in those fields you will need a higher degree within the field.

    now show us the labor outlook vs inbound new college graduates lol. I bet that will look pretty grim. How about show us entry level job with entry wages that college grads will have available to them while that college grad will likely have 30-90k in debt.

      Great point Bobby! I plan to go more in depth on these jobs in future videos. This was more of a bare bones video, just touching on the jobs. There is so much more to this discussion as you kindly brought up. Thank you for your comment.

      @@calvinraab8798 Can't wait to see that video. Hate to give high schoolers a false impressions on job outlook and earning potential when they decide to load them selves up with college loans... which in the long term a good portion struggle to pay off because entry level positions for these majors pay way lower and less common compared to other, more lucrative college degrees in STEM and Medical.

On top of me being very energetic and excited about this topic the breathing came out even louder.
