do you have fine hair? i’m having a hard time, bought some wavy hair shampoo which did help my hair hold the waves a bit more, so i got excited and bought a leave in and air creme and my hair was straighter after applying the product! i have no idea how or why that would happen considering the shampoo and conditioner worked.

A thing people ALWAYS forget too is: You can have wavy and curly hair at the same time. My hair CAN curl into ringlets when it's shorter and layered. But i have thick and very dense hair so the longer it is the less it CAN curl, leaving more wavy looking areas. Hair can be as complicated as skin type.

Also your hair can have different textures in different places. The back of my head is curly, like I don't do anything to it and I get closed curls with no effort. But the front is wavy and it refuses to hold a curl, so I have to work with two different textures at the same time. It led me to cutting it all off lol

The porosity test has a lot that can throw it off. Just observe the hair when you shower, if it gets wet really easily it's high porosity, if it takes a while to get wet and you can see the water droplets roll off your hair it's low porosity.

If you use the test in the video, be sure to submerge the hair entirely, then check where it is floating. Otherwise you’re only going to be seeing a demonstration of the surface tension of water! :)
I’m sure there’s other things (like definitely use about room temperature water) that throw it off, but that’s a big one! Also, porosity changes as your hair becomes damaged, so if you have very long hair that’s damaged at the end, you may see one end sinking and one floating.
      Good luck everyone!

Manes by Mell has a video on hair porosity but pretty much with finding ur hair porosity you’ll find ur moisture to protein ratio, and that’s what you use to determine what kind of stuff ur hair products need to have. Also since u have wavy hair, make sure ur products r lightweight and aren’t heavy. Get good quality tools but u can cheap out on hair products. Make sure u at least have a shampoo, conditioner, leave in conditioner, and some sort of styling product, for wavy hair it could be sea salt spray. Good luck!

look for a youtube video on a wavy hair care routine!! depending on how wavy your hair is and what you want it to look like, you should:
      - detangle in the shower
      - use shampoo/conditioner meant for wavy hair
      - either air dry it or dry it with a diffuser
      - never rub a towel on it, scrunch it with a cotton t shirt instead
      - for more defined waves, look for a yt video to find info on products

The water test isn't very accurate. Take a shower, does it dry fast? High porosity. Does it take forever to dry? Low porosity. Or you can spray water on your dry hair, if it beads on top then you likely have low porosity hair and if it absorbs into the hair you likely have high porosity.

Again, hairs are not alive, you can't repair it, you can't change their base, just add products to cause reactions

I’ve had a really short hair style for the past two years or so and now that I’m growing it back out my hair is being rebellious and reminding me that it isn’t pin straight… I’m talking swoops in the most random directions and this one stubborn cowlick directly in the back that insists on standing straight up at the base no matter how long it’s getting. Sure I had it when it was short as well but it was less noticeable with how the top was styled. Now, the rest of my hair will lay where I want it to while this one lock with be sticking an inch out of place and waving like a horse tail. From past experience of growing my hair from a near buzz to a bob, I luckily only have about 2-3 months until it’s long enough to pull back in a small pony tail. Useful info. I have always had medium type waves. My hair dries nicely, but I have deep waves, almost curly. But never knew about porosity. I have high porosity, and I have learned that high porosity hair is more prone to split ends happening more quickly than any other hair type. Just interesting tidbits there. I find that pure coconut oil (refined for use on the hair) works best as a leave in conditioner. Only need a pea sized amount, rubbed onto the hands and worked well into the hair.

I didn't know that about high porosity hair, but it seems that I've really hit the jackpot with easily damageable hair lol high porosity, fine strands..... can't use too much product or the curls get weighed down so my best defense is to control the environmental factors lol

For anyone wondering you can absolutely not know your hair is curly well into your 20s. I just learned in the past couple years (I'm 29) that my hair is curly. I would've called it a frizzy straight before and could not figure out why I couldn't manage my frizz.

if i don’t take care of my hair, it’s more wavy, but if i do, it curls more! my hair is curly wavy and it’s a bit hard for me to take care of it 😭 takes quite some time, time i don’t really have. but it’s kinda relaxing, taking care of my hair late in the night. it’s a burden but i wouldn’t have it any other way.

as a child up until my late teens, my hair was pin straight wet or dry. late teens until now, it's got a natural gentle/loose wave to it when dry but still very straight when wet.
but, my entire life, my hair gets VERY oily every few days. I try not to clean it with product every day because I know that will damage my hair long-term, but I do water-wash it every couple of days at the minimum.
the bad thing about my hair care? I know damn well that in order for my hair to have the best care, I would have to make my skin suffer because every single hair care product i know of that suits oily-type hair has lemon in it and I have a very irritating skin allergy to lemon.
so, regretably, i can only do so much for my hair and it'll never be at it's best because I'd be risking my health if I do.
everyone has that one thing they wish they could do but can't without personal risk, I guess.

A hair stylist told me and lets see if I remember that perosity just means how damaged or not damaged your hair is. So high perosity is damaged hair. Low perisity is virgin hair.
    Something like that.
So the more products and heat you use on your hair the more damaged it is.

My mom grew up a tomboy and never did anything to her hair. As a result it's a frizzy mess and it meant i kept my hair tied up in a bun 99% of the time. My mom had no idea to take care of her hair so I had no idea how to take care of mine. It wasn't until i was older that i figured it all out. Now my daughter and I both have beautiful curly hair. I've taught my kids all about hair care because of how important it was for me and how my parents failed me.

    Something between 3 and 4
Discovering what to use in my hair was a very long journey as I am mixed race but I am not black and I am not white.
My mother's from Asia and they have extremely black and shiny and smooth hair. My hair was always dark brown with lighter brown streaks when I was younger and it was this beautifully thick, luxurious, slightly wavy hair with curl at the end but ONLY until I hit puberty. Then all the frizz came out
My mom didn't know what to do with my hair. No one in her family has anything but straight hair. I think I was in my mid-twenties when I figured it out and I have to use hair care products from the "ethnic" section😂
I just wish it hadn't taken me almost 15 years to figure it out

I have wavy to curly hair. That is, it's a mixed texture. Some of it is wavy, some is curly, with coils tighter than a pencil. I even have a few strands of straight hair, but only a few. The drier my hair gets, the straighter it gets.

My hair porosity test results: all three 😅 top of the strand at the top floating, most hair floated in the middle and the ends sank to the bottom… I think it’s because I still have box colour damage I’ve been growing out and trimming along the way. Good to know my natural hair growing out seems to be mostly mid porosity and I assume that’s healthy for my curly IV type hair 😊

I spent 33 years on this planet thinking I had ugly frizzy dry and greasy at the same time hair.
Turns out they are wavy. And super low porosity. In just one hair wash day when I did the curly routine, I went from ugly hair to gorgeous clumps. I'll never dry brush them anymore.
    This girl is so right.

i only very recently found out my hair is pretty curly… though it may have changed. i cut my hair short when i was 13, because i didn’t want to be a boy with long hair as a teenager, i didn’t think it was cool (lol). as a kid my hair was brushed constantly and i thought wavy, but it was pretty frizzy still. since then i’ve obviously had some hormone changes, which can change your hair type. i started growing my hair out again in june, im in university now, and if i just leave it be after i wash it it’s decently curly! i don’t really know anything about hair porosity though, i’ll have to look into it.

  • @ojealism

Finding the hair type is the most basic step in Haircare and it takes someone 20 years of their life to figure out that its actually wavy hair and not straight frizzy hair. But once you know its literally life changing. Finally figured out after following blowout professor and abbey yung. Ive heard so many girls in recent years say that they only figured out after half their life is astonishing.
