Edit: That game is called Blindscape, where you play a blind protagonist. The screen is entirely black for the whole game and you have to follow sounds, like waterdrops, to find your way out. It's free to play.
There is like I think two games like that. One is actually good. I think it’s called perception. Basically the mc is blind, and she uses a technique called echolocation. Basically the screen is black but certain things are highlighted cause of sound or your echolocation. It’s really well crafted tbh
I watched a video once about some project (don’t think it got an actual release) that was a game where you only played through sound. You wear a blacked out helmet so you can’t see a thing, with headphones feeding you surround sound. You’re supposed to be deep underwater with monsters, you have to listen for them and aim and fire at them. You hear them shriek if you hit them or hear the shot trail off if not. They get louder as they get closer until they eventually roar as they attack, many people testing ripped the helmet off because they were so terrified.

You experience what the character does, so there should be visual cues you can use to understand the story, but it doesn't look like there are. I have to wonder if the character knows what's going on.

There's a concept here that could be interesting...they just didn't even try to do it. He's deaf, but can obviously read lips. Subtitles should be there for us when he can see the people talking, and have them cut off when he can't. It's set up as a mystery, so have him be able to investigate shit. Have an engine capable of having decent facial animations and read body language so he can pick up context clues about who to trust and who to watch out for. Have people turn away to say shit behind your back, but present opportunities like mirrors and other reflective surfaces to let the player get a partial idea of what they're saying via partial subtitles. Overhaul the combat engine and AI. Make it so you have to keep careful eyes on your surroundings and the movements of enemies because if they get behind you, you can't hear them coming. There's a lot that could've been done with it. Artlessly ripping out the sound and using it as a half-assed gimmick to get people to play again in a week is SUPER lazy.

or another idea that couldve been brought up is a horror type of game that plays on your fear. So you can hear things inside of your head and give special in game commentary. So when the main character reads lips or interprets something. He can say to himself what the people are saying in his own way. (Not exactly what would be seen as subtitles but like in past tense. So the character would say he said something bla bla bla and then the subtitles would be exactly what the other character was saying to the main.) This idea could work for both a horror mystery type of game. Where you hear stuff inside of your head. and theres so many directions you could take this into. Maybe multiple characters. So the deaf guy could be like a serial killer because hes gone insane due to the multiple "voices: in his head and then you switch over to a detective thats supposed to find and search for clues and unravel the mystery. So many different thigns you can do with the concept but the game needs to be revolved around the conept.

The Quiet Man is a special kind of awful. It's the video game equivalent of a B-movie, a B-game if you will. Not only that, it really thinks its some kind of groundbreaking piece of artwork that belongs in a museum. It's a prime example of everything wrong with game development today. If silence speaks volumes, then The Quiet Man's failure is so loud, it's deafening. Bravo, Square-Enix.

the concept is amazing and has a lot of potential (in the right hands), the game was developed by the same people who made Prey, square enix obviously had at least some hope for it in the beginning (otherwise they wouldn't show it off on E3), but the end result is a game equivalent of tommy wiseau's The Room
The room was at least alienating in how the people in it acted, this is just bad.

More likely someone heard they were making a story-focused action game with a deaf protagonist, pointed out the potential something like that would have to one of the devs, and the dev awkwardly replied, "...Yeah, exactly; that was... very much the creative vision behind this game" before hastily whispering to another dev, "Get rid of the audio! Get rid of the audio!"

Wasn't this game announced by Square Enix at E3 2018? Now it already came out and I never heard anything about it until now. No hype or at least trailer ads telling people its coming out, what was the point of showing this at E3?
I was honestly surprised to find out this game was already released. With the absolute lack of advertising, I thought it had been delayed or even cancelled.
