Leather Painting made easy! I know the thought of painting leather can be a little intimidating, I know I sure was at first, but never fear! I’m here to help! As promised, this week's video goes over some painting tips while I finish off the tall ship carving from last week. I talk about tools, brush maintenance, and a lil art theory.

Melissa: Have you ever tried to put down small areas of just the dilution liquid, then add the paint? It is a water color technique. Wet into Wet. Since I have never used the Alpha Flex Paints, I don't know if it would work. On the topic of brushes, I use Masters Brush Cleaner. Pink in a plastic tub. I have kept my expensive Winsor Newton Series 7 Sable brushes like new since I bought them. In 1980. Take care of your brushes they will last forever. Plus, I cobbled together a storage rack that holds the brushes, bristles down. (drilled out wood clothes pins) That way, the water after cleaning does not creep into the ferule.
I have actually tried that, yes, and it works quite nicely. I also use the same brush cleaner for my brushes too ☺️
That’s a great tip about hanging the brushes bristle side down to dry, I’m definitely going to give that a try!
@@dadhands Easy. Regular spring wood clothes pin. Clamp it shut and drill a hole at the very tip. Large enough drill bit to hold a brush handle. I had to use several diameters depending on the brush. Mount the clothes pins on some kind of long material and hang it up. Then clip the brushes in their own clothes pin.
Hey thanks for always being so real. All that stuff about fancy products is so true. My first tooling set was a $10 one from aliexpress that I gradually replaced with craftool ones as I figured out what stamps I used most, and it worked perfectly well :)
Also, I'm trying to get into painting leather, but I can't find anywhere in my country that sells Alpha6 and the import fees are astronomical, so I'm considering trying out the Angelus basics set that my local leathercraft store sells. Is there anything I should know about them before I buy or do you think it's a good beginners set?
Thank you so much! I appreciate your kind words. I think Angelus is a great alternative to Alpha 6. It’s what I started out with, and still use from time to time. I find sometimes the Angelus takes a little longer to build up colour, but they’re also very durable and come in some fantastic colours ☺️
