  • I recently watched the TV series 'Basic Up' which was a older TV show made that followed the Canadian Armed Forces Basic Training School.
    The show has some really good points and information that you can use if you are going into the Canadian military and although a little dated it is very useful.
    In this video we discuss how NOT to forget sentries when your going through army training. Here are the Basic Up episodes if you want to watch them:

    Speaking as a BMQ course officer (several courses under my belt) here are my observations:
    - Course senior failure to ensure the sentries have been relieved;
    - Why aren't staff serving the meal? I, alongside my staff, would serve the meals - also gave us an opportunity to observe the recruit's interaction;
    - Staff always eats after candidates have been served. Officer eats LAST;
    - Why didn't the officer (or 2IC) notice this failure before it got to this point?
    Enough blame to share here.

    Similar situation came up in my platoon. I caught on to it and the senior at the time said something I will never forget "Why the fuck should I care." when I asked if there were sentries to relieve the first sentries. I grabbed my buddy, 17 minutes into the 30 minutes meal and we ran outside, having barely eaten anything, because we had been at the tail end of the chow line, and relieved the sentries. Still, they went to the SGT and told him they had been forgotten and needed more time to eat, so my buddy and I, along with the entier section, were made to do these slow ass hanging pushups because the senior did not give a fuck and the sentries couldn't shut the fuck up.
    I ate nothing that evening, got extra PT, but learned that the next time someone asks me, "why should I care?" the answer is "Because I will hurt you if you don't figure it the fuck out."

    lol, I did BMQ in early 2020 and graduated right before the pandemic. Our punishments were more brutal than that in the video. So really depends on your instructors. 2 of my instructors were RCR & combat vets; a WO (2IC) & a Sgt. Then my other Sgt was a firefighter. Just with those 3, if you fucked up, you're gonna pay dearly. We also had a MS that was pretty fit as well & his corrective measurements weren't a joke either.
    Then during my SQ or BMQ-L, with all combat instructors, we paid even more.
    General rule of thumb, it doesn't matter what happens, you're gonna end up paying eventually. Sometimes dearly. Thankfully, with my two courses, we all took the punishments and never blamed one another. No in-fighting whatsoever.

    I can plenty imagine you being send on exercises to f.i. Iceland. Now to defend Iceland against an invasion does not take much. The terrain is terrible (vulcanoes in inconvienient places - and such) AND you have to brave the North Atlantic, so any complication will make enemy planners wince at the idea of attempting an invasion.

      Canada did not donate any equipment to ANSF, as there was no need at the time. Canada did not leave any equipment behind.
      The Taliban may have access to US supplied weapons meant for the ANA, and some helpful kit such as plate carriers, NVGs, some Humvee’s (they aren’t that great, hence why they are left behind in Iraq and Afgh. for use by local forces.). That’s about it. Nothing game changing.
      Heavier armoured vehicles need fuel, and specific maintenance. Taliban won’t be flying helicopters anytime soon, or for long… very critical, specific maintenance & structural testing is required, and very unique spare parts. Plus some training on how to fly a helicopter - one mistake early on, helo and “self appointed pilot in training” are done for.

    That was the problem I had as a "shop-steward" elected by the conscripts. In effect I had to do the NCO's job for them.

      The problem was that I as a master sergeant of the home guard had SOME notion of a sergeants job - basically I trained sergeants on occations.
      The conscripted sergeants of RDaAF were worse than anything I had seen in the Home Guard - not that the Home Guard (by any streach of the imagination) could be called elite; but when an NCO approached that idiots level - they were entrusted making coffee - we got used to apalling coffee.
      What I did was: I looked calmly at the idiot and asked if he insisted on the given order - and asked for a witness.They learned to fear my calm, deadpan stare. AND my aunt (which I did not inform them) was a devastating trial lawyer.
      Later in life: When I had a say in hiring staff - and the CV contained information, that they had been conscripted sergeants - well thank You, but no thanks. Which was the standard procedure in most companies (I later found out).

I personally think that people liked full metal jacket so much that somewhere along the line they re-adopted that training mentality because that's what it was. Things aren't as far fetched as you would think when you're getting trained to go to war, things get pretty dumb.

    Yeah, No! This is an epic fail on the part of the staff.
    "I asked and someone said they were relieved." What the **** is that? If someone lied to you then you punish that person. If there is a squad leader / platoon leader who didn't make sure that the entire platoon got fed then you punish that person. If there isn't a squad/platoon leaders then what the **** kind of course are you running? Why did staff let this problem go on for the entire meal? It is their job to spot this sort of mistake and correct it.
    As for punishing the whole platoon except for the sentries... Good job, you've established who the platoon goats are. From here on in those two will be hated. They did nothing wrong, but you've set them up to fail.
    What are you trying to teach here? That everyone is the leader and needs to second guess the decisions of their squad leaders and platoon leaders? Because that's the lesson these guys are learning.
    Finally, that sgt needs to skip a few meals himself. Not exactly setting a good example there is he?

    What???
    This is a failure of leadership, not a failure of the platoon.
    The platoon should not be held responsible for the failure of the NCO's.
    This issue demonstrates that the problem started right at the top with the guy abusing the platoon.
    Had he trained his NCO's correctly, this issue would not have arisen.

      Inclined to agree. However, part of that depends on what kind of course this is?
      Is this a BMQ(L)? PLQ?
      If it is a PLQ, maybe the onus was put on course senior to ensure everybody in the platoon was taken care of?
      Anything less than that, I agree - course NCO should be taken aside and asked WTF….

    • @MRrealmadridRaul
      @MRrealmadridRaul Před 2 lety +1

      What are you talking about NCOs? None of the candidates there even have a hook, the only people with ranks are the staff. Its a BMQ course and the candidates and especially the course senior are the ones responsible with swapping out sentries. If this was outside of BMQ, then yes, it would be the NCOs responsibility to make sure everyone is eating.

    • @MelbaOzzie
      @MelbaOzzie Před 2 lety

      @@MRrealmadridRaul So without NCO's or their equivalent, how is anything organised? How is military knowledge imparted onto the candidates? How were the candidates supposed to know that sentry posting was their responsibility? Who of the candidates was supposed to roster pickets? Were they told this?
      The whole point of the BMQ course is to teach the candidates the fundamentals, what they are responsible for, and what they are not. But if nobody told them, how are they supposed to know? Mind reading is not very common in humans.
      I repeat my original point: this is a fiasco that goes right to the CO who abused the candidates with wholly unjustified collective punishment in order to cover up his own failings.
      On the face of it, this course was a clear demonstration of lack of planning, organisation and leadership.
      The CO and his subordinates should be busted and sent back to basic. The BMQ candidates were unjustly and inappropriately blamed for the incompetence of the leadership.

    • @MRrealmadridRaul
      @MRrealmadridRaul Před 2 lety

      @@MelbaOzzie That was not the CO that was punishing them. It was an NCM. I could be wrong, but I highly doubt this was their first time they were required to do sentry. They were on the range and needed to sentry ammo so I am almost positive that they have had to sentry their rifles before. I am sure that the staff could have done better at teaching the candidates. There is always room for instructors to improve just like there will always be room for the candidates to improve. Like Matismus said in the video, everyone fucks up, and its usually not personal when they punish you for fucking up. You just gotta own it and move on. 100% the course senior fucked up and maybe the section seniors for making sure their fireteam isn't getting fucked by course senior. It does kinda suck for the other people being punished but there's a lot of people that become complacent and lose all initiative to make sure buddy isn't getting fucked. I'm sure after that incident they wont be trying to be lazy and let someone do all the sentry.
