OOPS! Splash Plays with All the Toys

How about the "Clumsy-Happy-Bear" floor-routine?
This was Splash, having himself a time at the Rub-a-Dub-Tub in-between love-sessions with Cammie, who was his current girlfriend at the time. He enjoyed playing with all the toys, and threw in a little of his signature splashing in the middle of his routine.
I was really tempted to insert those Batman-style "BAM!" "BLAP!" "BONK!" "KAPOW!" exclamations every time Splash smacked himself in the face with the empty Cub-Tub. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 It didn't matter how many times I watched that part of the footage, it still made me laugh out loud. Even from the lower-res camera angles.
That was Cammie sauntering by while Splash was ecstatically playing with the Rubber Ducky. I love how Splash stopped suddenly when he first noticed her. Cammie was just swiping a bee or a bug off her nose, but it sure looked like a salute or a hello when she pawed her face, didn't it? 😂
Splash is a hoot! I don’t think I’ve ever seen a bear involved with so many objects all at once. Quite the hyperactive, funny guy. I could watch him romp forever. Yes, it did look like Cammie gave him the salute. Loved his stop action as he spotted her, and briefly followed. He’s a small sub-adult, isn’t he! Goes with clownish, impish self. Love the rotating paw splashing the most! ❤

I love it when bears develop signature moves like that which help me identify them over the years.
Splash also has this distinct color-marking on his face that reminds me of mutton-chops. I always look for that, too, to see if it’s him.
He does seem like a sub-adult, but he sure has been active during mating season this year. (As has Cammie, with a number of fellas.)

They’re never interested, but whatever. I’ll keep buying the toys, anyway when the bears either abscond with them, or roll them down the mountain.
My land neighbor, way down in the valley texted me the other day. It was a photo of a giant blue ball resting in his creek. He asked me, “Is this yours?” 🤣 🤣 🤣 I told him to keep a look-out for rubber duckies, too.
If I ran the company who makes the tubs I’d be thinking how to get you and the bears involved in promotion of the product! People love adverts with animals in, and I bet these furballs would be overnight stars !

if only I could keep the bears from absconding with them, or rolling them down the mountain. I've lost and replaced quite a few toys over the years, no matter how many barriers I put up. Totally worth it, of course.

I'm running out of superlative to describe how amazing your videos are. I had a regular bear get in our tub yesterday and she soaked her bones for over 3 minutes and sat almost perfectly still the whole time and no splashes. Cute but boring. Then you provide us with this bear that was self challenged to make as much mayhem and to displace as much water as possible. The bears just intuitively know that there's more fun to be had on Amy's mountain than anywhere else (sorry, Patrick). I'm wondering, is your house close enough that you can hear any bears at the tubs or at any of your other play stations? You provided the video recently of Scruffy coming along the trail as you were cleaning and filling. It was excellent. I'm very interested in other sightings or interactions you may have had that you can tell us about. Future video with commentary maybe? Thank you, Amy.

The only time I can hear splashing is if the air is VERY, very calm and I’m already outside on the south side of the house - in the white garden - or a little ways on the land closer to the tubs. Which basically means, no, I almost never hear them. Shame, eh? But I’m happy to give them space so they can have a blast.
I have lots of Bear-Zen-in-the-Tub videos, too. They just aren’t as compelling for other people, but they sure do make me happy, too. Just quietly so. This guy made me laugh out loud over and over again.
Oh my goodness, that is the most delightful video! As others have suggested a children's book about Splash would be brilliant! He's such an adorable character!
Hang on, the other bear is the little bear's GIRLFRIEND??? She looked more like his mom - a lot bigger than him! He looks like a very young bear, his mom probably only just chased him away to get pregnant again - which for some reason bear moms do when their little teddies are still far too young but can just about survive on their own.
That's a little teddy, he probably doesn't know about the birds and the bees yet...
Yeah - he looks like a yearling size, but he’s actually older than that. (He’s also bigger than he appears in this video, for whatever reason.)

Cammie was super active during mating season last year, too, but, she must not have been old enough to have cubs. I’m hoping she’ll stick around the mountain next spring and summer because, if all goes as planned, she’ll have some cubs in tow next year. Here’s hoping! 🤞 🐻

Curious, are the bears aware of you?
Nope - at least not the vast majority of the time. These cameras are motion-sensor activated. I’m not there when the footage is recorded.
Every once in a while I’ll be down at the tubs or heading to the tubs when a bear is walking nearby, or when a bear wants to use the tub, so I just retreat and give them space. Just recently, one of my favorite bears, Scruffy, came down in the middle of my cleaning and refilling the tubs. I made a video out of that experience.

It would be interesting to see any real in the wild playtime video's to see what objects etc little ones young ones n older ones find in nature to utilize for enrichment. I've not seen much of that type of footage in my life. I luv how you've put so much variety of the perfect things throughout for them to indulge. Much happier bears this way for sure. Have you seen the video's of the non glass mirror where someone set up trail cams to watch n seen how they react? If only we could hear their thoughts of being startled, fooled n confused lol. It definitely shows why we never want to surprise a bear in the outdoors. I've been curious if there's dangerous native snakes where your bears are and how bears react or effected if bitten. Also misc other wildlife n bears getting suddenly surprised to each other. Sure appreciate and enjoy your video's.
:-) Pretty much anything is a toy to a bear, it seems. When they’re feeling joyful, their routine marking of plant matter can take on a really playful edge. I’ve captured footage of bears playing with sticks quite a few times. Both adults and cubs. Always makes me smile!
Oh, and yes, I’ve seen that video of the mirror in the woods. 😳 Poor thing! I felt so bad for the bear!
Funny that you mentioned the snakes. I was actually wondering about that myself after finding another copperhead near where I garden. (Unfortunately, WNC has a lot of copperheads and rattlesnakes.) I decided to google a bit and came across this paper by bear expert Lynn Rogers, et al. on bears and snake interactions in the wild. I haven’t read the entire paper, but it is fascinating how bear behavior appears to change depending on whether venemous snakes live in the area. (And yes, bears can succumb to a venemous snake bite. 😞)

@@FAIRVIEWCRITTERCAMS yes it was your channel i learned about them marking that way. I'm from near grizzly country and we'd see their claw markings on trees. Some rattlesnakes but nothing like the south and east have. The eastern rattlesnake gets huge compared to ours. Thank you for sharing and the link.

I'm definitely more comfortable in black bear territory, especially now that I'll always be hiking my trails and checking on my cameras by myself. Not that things can't get dicey quick here, too, but I generally feel safe. Can't say I'd feel the living farther west.
Then again, like you said, the venomous snakes here can get HUGE. 😳 I am way more concerned about the snakes and underground wasp nests than I am the bears.
@@FAIRVIEWCRITTERCAMS My grandma used to feed the black bears in Idaho pancakes lol. I have an old black n white photo of a black bear with her 3 cubs one the old highway into west Yellowstone with cars and people standing around with them. Over time they had to stop those human encounters. I've seen wolverine, badger, bears, cougars, wolves, coyote, bobcat, wild horses and rattlesnakes most by the time i turned 14. Back then it was more wildlife than humans. It's opposite now n such a tragedy imo.

And yes - same situation here. Asheville is the new Gold Coast. People are moving here in droves. The sound of construction is everywhere. I'm so glad that I managed to purchase this acreage when it was still affordable, and that it is so very close to thousands of acres that will never be developed. (Blue Ridge Parkway)
Here's hoping we get to see more critters and less humans. lol
