  • It's the stand that reduces champions to also-rans. However, the rat-in-a-pipe is not a 'lucky' target, says Ben Husthwaite. In the latest of his clay pigeon shooting masterclass series, champion shot Ben talks a shooter, Dave, through the process of shooting rats as they emerge.

    Thank you, Ben! When you say to place the gun on the rabbit's back edge, are you aiming the bead of the gun at the rabbit's back legs when you shoot (behind the rabbit)? The video looks like your student is shooting in front of the rabbit when he shoots (the rabbits front legs).

    Ben, I fully agree that you say that rabbits can make or break a score. We have just shot the NZ Sporting Open in New Zealand and the variation on the rabbits probably cost me five targets out of 200. Usually I enjoy rabbits and would shoot 80% of them but the variation I saw was impossible to prepare for. Saying that though,it was a good shoot and my overall average improved on some very hard targets. I have watched your videos and enjoy them throughly and believe that they have seen my average increase 8-10 targets. Some stands I have cleared but have much more confidence in my approach to the targets now, judging the method of lead interpretation being important. I believe its improved scoring. I have entered the 2019 UK Master and FITASC Worlds so six months of practise will give me more confidence in the sport.Thanks.

      I agree; simple physics tells us we cannot hit a moving target by shooting behind it. The camera shows the shooter breaking the rabbit by shooting IN FRONT, so I don't know where the "shoot behind" advice gets its source. Also, at 6:30, what Ben calls a 'beautiful shot' shows me an unbroken target..

    I like Ben, I like him a lot. I've been saying what he said about rabbit targets being unfair for years & years. In saying that though, I have seen a couple of very consistent rabbit layouts over the years but, most rabbit layouts are just shite. In competition, we all know that there will be slight differences within each presentation due to wind & etc however, the rabbit presentation can & usually does bring far too much chance when competition is serious.

    Absolute nonsense regarding consistency of targets , sporting shooting competitions are supposed to replicate hunting outdoors where weather, wild animals etc. are not predictable. The real skill in shooting is compensating for wind , differing movement of prey/ targets . maybe the chap coaching would like sporting clay shooting moved indoors and his rabbits running on tread mills.

    • @G31mR
      @G31mR Před 5 lety +3

      I agree. Everyone gets the same unpredictability on rabbits. If someone wants 'predictability' in targets, play a video game instead. Targets that jump: that's why they call them "RABBITS"!! I suppose he wants to only shoot on calm days, so the wind doesn't affect his targets in "unpredictable" ways........

    • @-UrbanSurvivor
      @-UrbanSurvivor Před 5 lety +2

      Guys, look at 6.56 the rabbits broken before the shot is taken, ive seen many a rabbit running away and jumping when ive been on point just about to shoot it, ive never had a real rabbit break up into bits on me before ive pulled the trigger though. now look at the video where he is interviewed about being called a cheat,now if your comment is to be taken seriously about this guy then you are not against what Ben is saying but every other person that says he bent the rules on one of the competitions he won, he even says in this video that if the rabbit is to jump it would be better if they have a jump for everyone to make competition fair play, hes talking about sports shooting guys, not the real thing, so as for replicating hunting that is a stretch of a comment too, in competition you would have 10 choices of where the clay was going to release from if this were hunting condition type shooting, you know so it was unpredictable like the real thing, its sports shooting, championship sports shooting and he is a multiple world champion
