We went through a dark era for JRPGs on the 2010s but it seems like they are finally coming back.
Man tell me about it! The PS3 was a wasteland for quality JRPGs. Now it feels like one comes out every other week.
@@TheGamingShelfThe Legends of Heroes carried the PS3 era of JRPGs imo
True. Too bad ff6 is à dmc game without sense of travel that we know from ff1 to 10
Japan has problems producing children so pray for them to have normal balance population so we can have many more years to play JRPG
Metaphor and SMRPG is insane. And i cannot wait for star ocean 2.
Star Ocean 2 especially! I've been waiting for that since they ported the other three... too bad aside from the first, TTEoT and TLH were bugged to high hell and still haven't been patched x.x
Star Ocean 2 stole the show for me too. Also that HD-2D and camera angle style would be amazing on Xenogears! and should be the standard if they want to remake retro JRPG
Somehow they made the character sprites look worse than they did on the PS1, but the character portraits are greatly improved. The backgrounds look very nice in the update, but the backgrounds in the original were very charming already. Mostly I don't think SO2 needed a makeover except for the battles.
@acidwizard6528 no the sprites have a lot more detail if you see them next to each other.
@@connordutton674 I'll have to check that out. I haven't seen the original in a long time. I was struck by how crappy the new sprites look in comparison to everything else in the remaster though.
Agree, add FF VI on that one.
@@se7engold YES! V too since that definitely needs some deserved love.
Not IV though - that's been remade enough times.
I wish I had a way to stop time. That way, I can catch up with all the fantastic JRPGs that I have yet to try before these new ones release!
Haha same! It’s literally my job to play them and even I can’t do it 🤣
Tell me about it - my bank balance keeps screaming "Oh no, not again!" Each time I see a new title xD
Metaphor looks insane. My most anticipated one for sure
I had never heard of Sandland - looks absolutely awesome!
Watching this makes me so excited to play what's coming and also reminds me of the games like Star Ocean 3 Till The End of Time, Infinite Undiscovery, Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of The Cursed King, and Grandia III, and all the others that made me fall in love with JRPG's to begin with. ❤
Such a great time to be a fan of the genre!
Speaking of those games, you reminded me of Rogue Galaxy.
I loved that one.
Man, jrpg fans like me have been getting it really good recently. Also I had to watch the Metaphor: Refantazio trailer twice because there was just so much stuff that I couldn't process it all in one go lol.
It’s a lot to take in and it goes by pretty fast!
@@TheGamingShelf indeed, indeed 😅
Looking forward to the Man Who Erased his name! Can't wait for more info on Infine Wealth too! Also, hope to hear more about Ys X in the coming months or so.
Super excited for Persona 3 Reload and Persona 5 Tactica. Definitely want Dragon Quest Monsters too!
Never heard of Bloomtown or Kunitsu-Gami and now I want them
The only issue I have with Persona 3 is the Lead English Translator is known to change Dialog based on her own Agenda. I will still get it, but not looking forward to what she messes with this time.
Super Mario RPG looks dope along with the new Platformer Mario Wonder
Finally a channel showing some love for traditional and modern JRPGs instead of purely action games…subscribed. So excited for Atlus’ new fantasy game!!
Welcome aboard! Thanks for subscribing.
super stacked annoucements! feels like there's been something for everyone recently
The mic audio on this video sounds funky, it peaks and troughs
What a time to be a RPG fan! So excited for All of them!! ❤🎉
Right!? So many great options!
I'm mostly commenting here for the algo, but I've just downloaded Star Ocean 1's remaster, the series looks like something interesting I'd be into.
WOAH i was just thinking about nexomon the otherday i had no idea there was a new one coming out!
Hoping that Sea of Stars turns out great!
For me, Star Ocean 2, Super Mario RPG, Metaphor ReFantazio, are the big three. I am curious about Dragon Quest Monster and Dark Deity2, they look like fun.
That beach in Like a Dragon is literally Waikiki beach in Honolulu.
Well, as an rpg collector, I will be buying all these haha
How come I never heard about that Star Ocean Second Story Remake?!? It was one of the first JRPGs I ever played (besides Suikoden) and this Remake looks gorgeous!! The character portraits look stunning, more mature and how I always pictured the characters! The Artwork seldom gets better when a game ist remastered/remade, e.g. Suikoden Remaster portraits look good, but almost too handsome, more generical than the original characters.
There were so many good JRPGs i didn't know were coming out. Immediately subscribed 😅
A lot of my Mutuals were happy about the Star Ocean announcement maybe I should check that series out but I know next to nothing about it it’s like the new version of Tales or Ys
The original staff used to make the Tales games so it shares a lot of DNA!
I was already looking forward to some games, but the nintendo remakes just straight stabbed me in the wallet with SMRPG and Star Ocean 2nd story. xD
Definitely gonna buy the jrpgs especially persona and star ocean 2 the rest im gonna wait for the reviews before buying
Glad to see a new DQ Monsters game. I have Joker and Joker 2, and both are great games.
All of these are going to be added to my wish list
Metaphor looks insane!
good video, time stamps would make it even better
Man, we sure are eating good in the coming months and year, so many jrpg and my eternal backlog shall grow
1:38 I mean...P1 and 2 also desperately need remakes. In fact in last years' survey about which games fans wanted to see remade P2 duology tied with P3 as the top voted answer.
It is going to be super weird to hear a new voice cast for P3. Although the cast from metaphor looks the main guys from the persona games...😅 but still excited.
Silent Hope straight up has the cows from story of Seasons and set in the rune factory universe.
I have been looking for a single player offline game like Genshin Impact but not gacha (I hate gacha games, they are essentially gambling) and that Rune Factory project is just what I have been looking for all these years. I am so excited for that one.
Yes, yes, and um, oh yes!
Honestly, the moment I heard about the Star Ocean 2 remake, the first thing I did was check to see if they brought back the original Japanese cast like the first game's Switch port did. And thankfully, they did; it'd be kind of disappointing if the first game got to use both casts but this one didn't.
Great Video as always!, but u miss Fate/Samurai!! it looks like a great looking fate game in a while!!!
How did persona 3 reloaded fly over my radar, it was revealed 11 days ago, that's so hype tbh
Ohh myy. . . star ocean 2 remake? (tears of joy)
I havent been able to play a Star Ocean game yet, but that remake looks absolutely stunning. I've been having remake/remaster fatigue lately, mainly because there's just been SO MANY these days and disappointment Ive felt from FFVIIR has really made me wary of them, but something about The Second Story R is just enchanting me. I guess this is my sign to crack open the series already. the new Dragon Quest Monsters looks to be a ton of fun too. it's an exciting time to be an RPG fan
Star Ocean 2 (Second story PS1/Second Evolution PSP) is sadly the peak of the Star Ocean franchise.
It's got a fantastic story while is connected to the first, but doesn't require you to play or know much about the first game at all. Just the benefit of enjoying the three particular Easter eggs.
You get two fairly different perspectives on the same story, one as the outsider alien, and one as the curious girl.
There are times where the pair split up, have different encounters, and keep secrets from each other, but mostly the path differences are the characters inner monologue. So playing through the game twice is a significant and different experience even if the main plot points are mostly the same. 10/10 check it out.
Star Ocean First Departure R, is a slight downgrade from the PSP remaster in the art department, as I prefer the original PSP remake better (especially through high end emulation settings) but it is still a great game. 8/10
Star Ocean Till the End of Time (PS2) is also a great game, but there are elements and oddities about the game that if you ignore, or worse take your time enjoying can screw you over after the 60 hour mark, that make it overall worse of an experience than the first two games in their relative simplicity. Just make certain to stop adventuring to cook and invent every 20-30 minutes to stay ahead of the curve after the 5 hour mark especially. Keep at least 5 save files on major points in the story in case any of the background changes get out of hand. Otherwise you'll hit the point where armor, weapons and medicine will be too expensive to stock up on, without grinding, which will put you further behind in development of new things causing a terrible experience in the late game. It's also a 190 hour adventure if you do everything. (Not counting restarting your game or redoing sections if you fall too far behind.) 7/10 good
Sadly from that point forward Star Ocean goes down hill and I can't particularly recommend any other game in the series. But I also haven't played the latest one.
@@Mac_Omegaly this is such a helpful starter guide, thank you! I was aware the titles vary in quality but im glad there are still some standouts. I did hear the most recent one was pretty decent!! Wish more of this series got Steam releases, but thankfully i should be able to emulate it with no problem :^) thanks again
@@codaish glad I could help.
I shamefully only got around to my PSP backlog recently (pandemic bonus perk) and played both of these classics. Ripped the UMD and played them on my phone. I got Second Evolution for a dollar on K-mart deep clearance when the Vita released and I should have played it years earlier.
The only thing I didn't particularly talk about for First Departure and Second Evolution are the hidden party members. Both games have about three to six different characters that are completely optional to recruit, some of them have fairly odd requirements to find. You might want to find a spoiler free companion guide, if you want to understand your options, otherwise playing blind is the best option for the two PSP games. (Unlike Star Ocean 3 where a guide is less optional for unlocking all the ultimate weapons, understanding the occasional strange puzzles.)
I’m very mixed on the HD Sprite Style. On One hand the lighting looks nice and on another hand I just don’t feel like it meshes well with some environments.
The gameplay does look kinda fun though.
@@jonahabenhaim1223 well I can recommend both the original PS1 game and/or the PSP remaster to check out while you're on the fence on this remake's art style.
Persona 3 reload
Metaphor Re: Fantazio
Persona 5 Tactica
Like a dragon gaiden
Like a dragon infinite wealth
Kunitsu
Rune factory project dragon
Mario rpg (can’t believe it’s real)
Star ocean 2 R
Dragon quest monsters
Sandland
Are all on my radar
5:48 the Excalibur Warframe?
Tactica scares me because now I gotta wonder if we're ever getting another Devil Survive. Otherwise it looks great same with Refantasy.
No valkyria chronicles 5 or golden Sun sadly. Still good stuff. That sand game looks sick. Saw the mangas in my high school's library.
"Out of off Persona games I thought this needs remake the most"
Persona 1 & 2 says hi.
There were Persona games before 3? 🤯
Wait Silent Hope.... ugh why would the yuse the Harvest moon Cow and Chicken assets? The HELL MARVELOUS?!
I thought I would know them all but you had a few in there that had never heard of.
That’s always the goal! Which ones are you most excited for?
@@TheGamingShelf Mario RPG and also that new one from Akira Toriyama
Star Ocean is so LIT🔥🔥🔥
I'm waiting on GranBlue Fantasy: ReLink
Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth!!!!
>Sandland
>Brand new
Sir. I did read that manga in friggin 2001 allready. Its over 22 yrs at least
AAA didn't expect yakuza spoilers :C
I know there are at least a half a dozen of the games hown here, Like the SMRPG Remake, DQM Dark Prince, Both Yakuza Like a Dragon games and the Star Ocean 2 remake.
Sandland looks real good, but if it functions like DQ11, I want no parts of it. There looks to be so many great upcoming RPGs though :)
How are we not talking about Sea of Stars from Sabotage studio and Eiyuden Chronicles Hundreds Heroes from original Suikoden creator coming this year!!! 😮
I’m not gonna lie, I preordered the day 1 pack for Silent Hope and I’m a little bummed. I know it’s an indie game but it feel like a mobile game. I love repetition so don’t get me wrong, a good gameplay loop is what I crave. But it just feels…. Idk boring? Maybe I’m just not far enough in and I have to play more but I’m a little disappointed. Sea of Stars though? Amazing. I’m excited to Star Ocean Second Story and SO excited for Dragon Quest Monsters!
I’m a simple man. I see Takahashi Rie, I buy. Even though I’m really not interested in persona
I have been playing 7DS Grand Cross for more than 3 years and this is the first time I have seen them sponsor a YT video. Also Ban is pronounced as B-AA-N
Sorry, my first time trying to pronounce it 😆
wish I could go back to being 15 amd have more time to play them
JRPGs have a serious hold on my wallet and time 😅 I’m definitely not complaining though but with all the new and amazing JRPGs coming out soon, I’m probably not going to be able to finish my backlog for several years.
Why have Dragon Quest's version of Pokemon, only on the console where Pokemon is?
Dragon quest the dark prince ,sandland ,star ocean the second story r rune factory project dragon, deca police is what I’ll get this year
8:02 You literally show off a new feature or two added to the game during this question 😅
That ultimate-meter-looking thing wasn't in the OG game, and neither were those stat boosts on the timed-button attacks
I like that so2 remake. But hell I don't like that cloude normal attack like it ripped on psp port
INSANE BRO
🤯
Would rather onimusha then okami 😢
Star ocean 2 was the best one by far i hope they dont trash it with a remake
Agreed! It looked fantastic.
im still waiting for a new GOLDEN Sun Game.
The star Ocean one does not have "similar proportioned sprites to the original game" it's THE exact same spritesheets ripped from the original game without any edits...
There are some color shifting, as well as voxal shading on the edges that cause their appearance to differ slightly.
I'm mostly okay with this approach. And the new animated character artwork for dialogue sequences work much better for me over the unappealing First Departure R art style.
I kind of miss the hand painted backgrounds... But given the earthquake scene shown, and other events later in the story I am okay with using this style to allow more dynamic in engine cut scenes and events. When shit hits the fan in the mid late game I am sure the team has their work cut out for them, and that is why it's been 5 years since the First Departure Remaster came out.
(The PSP release of Second story is called Second Evolution and is a fantastic remake too.)
So many interesting new games are coming out I can't keep up.
Still waiting for the Suikoden release date over here
Yeah what’s going on with those games!?
Dark Deity is on sale on Steam right now for around $6. Is it worth it? I like old school Fire Emblem.
Absolutely! It’s a fantastic game.
@@TheGamingShelf Just pulled the trigger on that. I really enjoy old school tactical RPGs, and am always happy to hear about another game that scratches that itch. Thanks for the advice Taylor. Have a good day!
"bummer" !?
The chibi art style of Persona 5 Tactica is literally the main reason I'm getting the game ! 😐
it hard not to think of the like a dragon game. far what showed cannot help but think Austion Powers mixed with LMFAO "sexy and I know it
ik its 2 months... but p3 is hard like the one on portable? i dropped coz its hard af to level up, im casua/easy player... im tired from everything, just seeking for relax, like FF1 2 4 etc
Woooooaaahhhhhh, probably should have given a spoiler warning for Yakuza my guy!
it kinda stinks that all these DQ games are "stuck" on the Switch.
i hear that Star Ocean 2 is the best and im glad its getting remade...but while it is visually striking from an objective point of view, the HD/2D style is getting to be kind of run of the mill now. I feel like any JRPG that comes out on the Switch has to be in that style for it to work on that hardware. HD2D style for JRPGs is the new 2D metroidvania platformers for indie developers. Both are cool but it's losing its luster/novelty. 🤷🏻♂️
I hear you, but I feel like SO2 is doing a slightly different twist on the formula compared to Octopath.
STAR OCEAN!!!!!!!!!!!!
Let’s go! 🥳
Where's the Fate? Haha
When I was writing the video it was revealed yet. Missed it!
That persona tactics has a bad chibi vibe 😢
C'mon Akira toriyama remake Chrono trigger please
Other then Rune factory nothing caught my interest and I wish the Nexomon game would come to switch, bruh.
Metaphor still has a modern day setting look, it completely lost my interest with the reveal.
Path of The Goddess looks like it may be the Monster Hunter team and makes me afraid we won't hear anything about MH for another year or two, I hope I'm wrong.
Lastly, I may finally play Star Ocean 2. I thought a certain voice actor was in it, but he's not present. And people using it to put down SO4 turned me off from getting it on PSP/Vita. The Last Hope is my favorite in the series and I resented 3 by the time I finished it.
That Kiryu game is a brawler, not really an rpg.
who else is going in an induced coma till november? Persona5T mariorpg starocean2R my wallet is gonna have cancer!
💀 💸
They're trying to sell a Playstation 1 game with updated environment graphics but the same everything else for 50 bucks lol that's crazy
The combat is totally different. And updating the visuals like this isn’t easy. A lot of work went into this game.
@@TheGamingShelf the sprites are literally the same. I owned the Playstation 1 game. That's not updated.
Persona 3 without most iconic "Answer"? It's part of the story.Too sad that we'll get cutted version.
What point in Persona Tactics? We got Devil survivor series and still waiting for next one.
10:20 "cast of characters not like typical Jrpg" - its simple adult mc and characters, not that kids,teenagers,high-schoolers etc(like Yakudza for example) too bad its extremly rare.
My only issue with the new SMRPG is how cartoony it looks now. Use to have a sorta creepy vibe to it, but with everything so rounded and childish looking, it seems to have lost that original esthetics. Still will be fun to beat this game for the 4th time, but sadly it won't feel the same, knowing how cartoony, and weird/generic everything looks now.
Persona 3 can't have a female protagonist it's break the game lore
I don't see Fate/Samurai Remnant.
Damn you’re right! Should have had it.
SO PUMPED! for P3.. but tbh they need to stop milking the P5 IP and move on.. its time for P6
For real. P6 can’t come soon enough.
I’m just so disappointed that we won’t have the female protagonist in P3. I have only played it on psp. Will not buy if they put in the female.
I know right!? I was gonna play with her. Sad times 😔
'Love that the kids have guns!' ...I have no words...
It’s a video game. Relax.
Kids have guns in America? That hits a little too close to home.
I never thought of that, but yes all too true.
Glad i could pause the video quick enough bro just dropping yakuza spoilers like everyone finished all 7 games yet. Like tf?
Hmmmm I wonder how long people will play the same Persona game over and over again.
In a world where final fantasy is continously disappointing, these jrpgs are a breathe of fresh air
I love that the genre is back healthier than ever. There are SO many great games, too many to sift through.
