  • Beech is a rather inexpensive imported wood from Europe, and it's also pleasant to work with because of it's tight, dense grain. Beech is also a very light tan color, and very consistent, so it's a natural choice when you want some strong, good looking furniture, cutting boards or other wood projects. In this first of a two-part video series, we cover what to know about woodworking with European beech. That includes techniques for both hand tools and power tools.

True, here in Europe beech is "The affordable" hard wood which is available almost everywhere. It would be nice to see a video on finishing beech, I really enjoy those of your videos too!

Funny you mention that, we're "finishing" that one up right now. It'll be up soon. Thanks for your comment!

Canadian here..recently discovered beech. Wow. Hard as oak vut handtools work it like cedar! Weird stuff. I made some handplanes and a few small projects with it. Would love to try some furniture but heard it grows and shrinks when the wind blows! Is it that bad?..i hope not because I really like working it.

I'm in Toronto, it's impossible to find any easy source of Beech here. I magically found an old beech desk in the garbage and I'm reclaiming the wood. It was amazing, like finding a bag of money in the trash. Beautiful substance.

    Tips for Woodworking with Beech:
Work fast and with sharp tools. Or don't, and sand it out afterwards.

why European beech over American? its native here too and plentiful here in the mid Atlantic..good tips though

Fair question. You might be disappointed in my answer . . . We buy lumber from lumber wholesalers, and we don't ever see American beech offered. The clues I have are European beech is the most widely consumed hardwood in Europe, the forest supply is strong (much more plentiful than American beech), and it's inexpensive. Plus European beech has a finer texture than American, which might make it more desirable. I can only surmise that American beech can't beat it when viewed through the prism of the commercial supply-demand chain.
