      I love Dennis Prager, but this is the one point I disagree with him on. Human nature IS inherently and basically good. It's actually inarguable, and abundantly scriptural.
      That said, it is broken by sin and surrounded by a fallen world. The struggle is real.
      Here's the simple logic:
      If we're "broken", by "sin" that "corrupted" us, then these very words demand a reality that predated them.
      We were once "whole", in perfect "union with God", and perfectly "pure". Our nature is perfection. Period. Our current state is fallen.
      Why do we ignore our bodies when they're healthy, but notice when we're sick? Because healthy wholeness is the real norm, and the sickness is the broken aberration.
      Why do we give a simple smile and head rub our kids over A's and B's, but throw a fit and punish and alter course over F's and D's? Because thoughtful, attentive, and disciplined are the real norm, while failures are the broken aberration.
      YOU. ARE. INHERANTLY. GOOD! : ) Smile about it. Cherish it. And yes, take the EFFORT to "Count your blessings".
      Know also that you're broken. So embrace your Savior. Without Christ you can't get back to perfect.
      This has actually been the Catholic Moral Theology since year 33. : ) Live loved!

      I tend to agree with you. While we do have a sin nature element because of what we inherited in our bloodline through Adam, we are still creatures that were made in God’s image. So, often we see good elements in most everyone…….but that sinful element got dealt with through Jesus as we take that step of accepting/receiving it and become “in Christ”.

    • @tturbine3940
      @tturbine3940 Před 2 lety +2

      @@bfowler1000 Well said. I didn't quite agree with how Dennis expressed that idea, as it is not what I see around me. The heart is not capable of thoughts. Jeremiah does not say the mind is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked, nor the will. I think that concerning thoughts, behavior, and will, most people, despite their hearts, are, most of the time, kind, considerate, and have respectable moral standards. As we walk with minds renewed in Christ, we don't listen to our sin nature, neither our deceitful and wicked hearts.

    Oddly by contrast, I remember once at university, some of us Christian students had a meet-up with some Jewish chaplains and students, and one of the things we said about the Christian belief is that man is inherently bad. And one of the Jewish chaplains expressed serious issue with the idea that man is inherently bad, and if I remember rightly, claimed that in Judaism, man is inherently good. He did still acknowledge that there is a side prone towards bad, but nevertheless still found the idea problematic of framing it as man being inherently bad.

      While I appreciate your pointing out that there are different opinions in Jewish thought (we would hope so for a religion this old!), this will unfortunately be interpreted as a sign of blanket confusion in Judaism as a whole. Varying opinions and ones that align with each peraon's worldview is a reality in EVERY religion or organization. We are each constantly beset with the temptation to see another person as one monolithic category that we can safely avoid as uninteresting and uncompelling. I have heard many Christians level accusations against each other for "cherry picking god's word" as they call it--Even though this activity is the ultinate basis of every Christian denomination. We dont have to let this make or break our faith. Judaism collects VOLUMES of alternate opinions and STUDIES them! There is more wisdom to be found in differing opinions than in bland conformity. Perhaps because even those tiny fragments of truth we recieve differently are so powerful, we often fail to understand that we are still only seeing tiny fragments.

    • @giorgiorosa4402
      @giorgiorosa4402 Před 2 lety

      @@booksquid856 Good points, but you literally accuse me of sowing seeds of confusion and then state in the affirmative and in BOLD TEXT what Judaism is. I'm sorry, but Judaism is clearly not one thing or one approach. Because you have very distinct opinions on Judaism I assume that you practice or that you are involved in some community at some level, if you are not and you mostly read stuff and don't have a practice background then some of this may be too much.
      Judaism is a religion in diaspora and there is no "Temple" according to very Orthodox interpretations. Orthodox Jews also have certain beliefs in the Oral Torah that are not held by Reform or Conservative Jews. Also if you look sometimes at the content of a Siddur or a Hagaddah the meaning can vary greatly.
      We cannot say what Judaism is or isn't. Some Jews don't study as much, they may only practice, and their interpretation may be what they practice rather that what they study. Some Jews are only cultural. Some Jews are Kabbalists and some believe in a literal Messiah and some don't.
      We now have Orthodox Jews and Conservatives in America with vastly different opinions of Judaism and what it means to be 'born Jewish'. You can't say that my statement will add more confusion. This comment was in response to someone who was told "Jews don't have a teaching of...".
      My comment was based on that. I honestly take issue the confidence of people who say "Judaism is this way or that way". It's not. There is so much diversity. I agree with the Chabad Rebbe that Judaism is about Jews and all Jews practice at all levels.

    COMMANDMENTS 2023
    1. You shall never relinquish your critical thinking in favor of a conceptual entity the existence of which you cannot validate.
    (We must all recognize the fact that today, religion is the most serious impediment to any sensible management of the worlds peoples. Religion and belief in conceptual entities, divides humans into competing groups that will invariably argue, fight and kill each other's children over these unfounded beliefs. This has to stop as should the "polite tolerance" of totally implausible religious claims. It is time for us all to think; to think rationally; to think for ourselves. We must have the honesty, integrity and courage to admit when we do not know the answer and that the answers will not be found on our knees with our eyes closed.)
    2. You shall never elevate your cause above your humanity.
    (Humans can be moral without a belief in a conceptual entity. Develop your empathy.)
    3. You shall stop the practice of genital mutilation of your young for religious reasons and the presentation to them, of implausible religious claims, as absolute truth.
    (Hide your face and weep if you dare to harm a child.)
    4. You shall not tolerate cruelty or the subjugation and mistreatment of people. (Women in particular have had an inferior status based upon ancient religious text.)
    5. You shall honor your father and your mother.
    6. You shall not murder.
    7. You shall not have sex irresponsibly, without consideration of its consequences or without empathy and consideration for others and you will always insist upon safe sex practices.
    8. You shall not steal and cannot escape judgment if you rob people with a false prospectus rather than with a weapon, nor will you "rip people off" in the name of religion.
    9. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
    10. You shall not covet. (You shall learn to control your envy.)
    11. You shall not condemn people on the basis of their ethnicity or their color but you should rigorously question their unfounded beliefs. (Contemplation is acceptable, unprovable assertions are not.)
    12. You shall not condemn people for their inborn non-violent nature.
    (Why would God create so many homosexuals only in order to torture and destroy them?)
    13. You shall not use people as private property, as owned, or as slaves.
    14. You shall accept responsibility for what you do and shall not defer such to a conceptual entity, the existence of which we cannot validate. (Scapegoating, or having someone else die for your sin is not moral.)
    15. You shall rigorously pursue a verifiable truth, develop your empathy and have respect.
    (Be aware that you, too, are an animal, and dependent upon the web of nature. Think and act accordingly.)
    16. You shall strongly oppose all and any efforts to incorporate religion into government or the military, shall insist on the separation of Church and State and guard against religious literalism.
    17. You shall wear clothes for protection, fashion or humor but not as a propitiation to a conceptual entity, the existence of which we cannot validate.
    18. You shall refrain from dragging inappropriate, unverifiable and meaningless beliefs and rituals from the past, into the present and shall recognize that cultism is a damaging and corrosive pursuit.
    (Human beliefs and strange rituals are learned, they are not part of human DNA. It is time to understand that we can all get along if properly educated.)
    19. You shall not present religious pseudoscience as education or as literal and will accept that we are mortal beings with finite lives, whose purpose is for us to collectively and individually determine.
    20. Governments should discontinue tax exemption for religion and stop the support and perpetuation of implausible religious claims that cannot be validated. (Belief in a conceptual entity should not absolve you of your obligation to pay for the umbrella of infrastructure and defense from under which you enjoy your freedom)

      @briansmith1885 Před 2 lety +3

      @@royclaire1 I’m truly sorry to hear that, Morgan. But this not my opinion, it is God’s word. If you are devoted to Christ, you would be more concerned about those who do not believe, like Dennis Prager. Trust me, you do NOT want to go to hell. Please read God’s word. He says in Romans 3 that there is no one good, no not one. Prager may be “good” relative to most humans, but all humans are not truly good, in that we are all born into sin (see Romans 5). There is only One who is good, and that is God. That is why the gospel means “good news”. For the Lord Jesus paid the penalty for the sins of all who have faith in Him, while at the same time, by faith, He credits His righteousness to us, a righteousness not our own, for only He was without sin. That is all the work of God, we contribute nothing to our salvation. So, be devoted to the true Christ, for the Bible is the Word of God, and Jesus is the Word (see John 1).

    • @booksquid856
      @booksquid856 Před 2 lety

      The problem with saying this is god's word is that you are actually saying that your religious interpretation is god's word. In reality every term of the Bible was redefined by a Catholic political church when Constantine sought to unify the dying embers of the Roman empire...and thus established a new religion called Christianity. You now study a book devoid of all its context--so that its words mean something entirely different from that imagined by its authors. "Born again" or being "children of Abraham" --ancient terms still used in Judaism to refer to gaining citizenship with Israel--are now redefined as the result of praying the sinner's prayer to gain entrance to an afterlife in a heaven somewhere off the map. This out-of-context definition can still be boiled down to an important central truth about leaving slavery to your past life of whatever it may be to become transformed. But today these terms are entirely stripped of their original national/social/political/philosophical meaning to describe a zealous follower in a newer religion. Again this doesnt invalidate someone's personal transformatiom when they become inspired by the life of Christ. It does mean, however, that we cannot and should not assume that any term or text from scripture as it is being used by christianity today bears any resemblance to the definitions once understood long ago.

    • @briansmith1885
      @briansmith1885 Před 2 lety +3

      @@booksquid856 God wrote the Bible through men so we would be transformed by His Spirit, so we would better understand His nature and character, and so we would understand what it means to live as a Christian. To say that my reading of the Bible is different than everyone else’s reading means that God did not make His word clear, which is contrary to the fact that He gave us His word for the purposes I have mentioned (as well as others). No, His word is clear, and any lucid human can understand it. To take your view would then mean that books written by humans in a plain way, intended to convey information, would mean something different to every individual, which is clearly not the case. For example, if a human author writes in a book, “the cat climbed up the tree”, it means a cat climbed up into a tree, plain and simple. When God says all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God, not only is that clear, we actually can attest to this in our life, by our actions as well as by others. We know we have all sinned. So God’s word is clear, and nobody made it devoid of its context. Praise God for that!

    • @booksquid856
      @booksquid856 Před 2 lety

      Yes, your reading is in fact different from everybody else's. This issue is not a degradation of scripture, truth, or god. This would simply be the case for any text you pick up. It is impossible for any two distinct minds to process language in the exact same way, let alone out of context, through translation, and redefined for thousands of years. To quote a humorous example from a rabbi friend, a "red shirt" does not simply mean a red shirt to Star Trek fans of his generation. This does not mean that reading the Biblical text is of no benefit to a modern reader. Quite the contrary! It is of huge benefit!! It should be studied by theist and atheist alike! People rediscover important truths in the sacred texts all the time...even when they completely miss the original meaning of its written language. Again, the idea of citizenship ("born again") being redefined as conversion to a new religion is just one example. And for those remaining exiled Israelites of the first century who sought to be reborn as citizens, immigration did in fact involve adjusting to a different religious practice and philosophy. This was extremely difficult for many, and hard to justify when there were Judeans who already had citizenship but were not very religious at all. Similarly, an immigrant to America cannot hope to embrace the vision of our nation without accepting key historic points and values. Often he gets a new name at the start of this transformative journey. Of course, a person need not be a Christian to become an American citizen, but his or her success in our nation will be built on a respect and acquaintence with historic judeo-christian principles that have shaped our country. An American is only truly an American if he is inwardly. He may be an American citizen by birth and can still forfeit the benefit of living in a free nation...thus trampling all over the blood of those who fought for our freedom. And an alien who truly embraces America is like a child of our own founders--new to the soil but fully inspired to sacrifice for that freedom.
      So although Christianity redefines the term "born again" as purely conversion to a new religion (and one that was yet to be created at the time the Biblical texts were written), the redefined phrase in Christianity is used to express truth nonetheless. Another example...the phrase "kingdom of heaven" did not originally mean an afterlife in the sky but referred rather to rule of god's wisdom on literal earth and in what was expected to be a resurrected nation of Israel first. And yet we can see that the Christian reinterpretation still expresses the truth that there is a dimension of life (call it heavenly) beyond the plain sordid facts on our globe and that can lead us to a future life of blessing and that brings meaning to even the worst present circumstances. Is there such a thing as an actual heavenly afterlife even though this idea is mostly foreign to the original phrase "kingdom of heaven"? I hope so. There is no reason to despair over its nonexistence simply because this is not often the concept being referred to by "kingdom of heaven." There are other texts in jewish tradition to indicate faith in an afterlife more similar to that of Christianity. Another example, rapture theology is an incredibly recent invention of western christianity, and the book of revelations no longer relays the specific meanng it once did...The numbers 666 (numbers symbolically replace words and ideas in Hebrew) have been redefined as the sign of a nebulous future dictator. In reality, this numerology referred to a past and very specific dictator named Nero who was in fact known as the beast. And YET...the truth about dictatoriships forcing people to wear a hat or a star or a mark (or a vaccine passport?) in order to provide for their daily sustenance is a commonly repeated theme under various regimes up to the present time. So while Christianity now refers to this as an unidentified future regime, this can unfortunately still be an accurate prediction. History repeats frighteningly, dragging once prosperous and free nations into the hell of tyranny. I do not wish to suggest that any of this knowledge about the text and its history can replace the underlying more powerful truth that a Being we cannot define with any human language is still immenant and loving...and not because we have somehow earned such affection. The truth isnt the written words themselves or their definitions or the data to go with it. Yet...Studying these written texts disciplines our minds to embrace actual truth...love, hope, freedom from pure entropy and nihilism. It only becomes dangerous when we mistake our interpretations of a written text for the self-contained and immortal truth itself. It is also worth noting that not all ideas in these texts were ever intended to recieve an ovation. Some are purely cautionary reflections on historic views and choices.
      Regardless and even in hindsight, our interpretation can only be a grey reflection.
