- See the complete removal and installation of the oil pan on a 1999-2007 GM engine in order to replace the oil pan gasket. The process is the same for the 4.8L, 5.3L, and 6.0L across GM products including Silverado, Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon, Sierra, and Escalade.
**NOTE** This repair was done in conjunction with other major engine work. You can remove the oil pan without removing the front differential or transmission by loosening the motor mounts and jacking up the engine.

Great video but i will say this is the video to watch if your getting paid by the hour on a job. You do not have to remove any steering components or axles, just unbolt the front differential and let it hang down as far as it will go. It only needs to go down an inch or so. That plus removal of the cross member is all that is necessary. Hope this is helpful to anyone in the comments!
Ill try tonight on my Hummer H2 :)
I've been trying to figure out a faster way and I didn't see this comment til now
Just be sure to watch out for the oil pick up. When you jostle the pan out without removing the diff carrier, you risk banging it against the pick up and thereby squashing the o-ring, which leads to oil pressure loss.
You forgot the oil pickup tube o-ring! Gonna need it 😮
It is a pain. Really good video though. I like that you showed all the torque specs. Thanks
great video, detailed info, just wish i could this as fast as u!!! took me 1.5hrs just to get oil pan out! in my defence im doing in driveway on jack stands,a 2post lift would've been nice. lol just kidding the magic of video editing!! great video and job well done. thanks for showing how to do job the correct way and showing us torque specs.
Buddy. You just gave me the confidence to do this. Bless you. Hopefully, you have a video on the transmission being taken out
My dude still rocking great grandaddys torque wrench 😂
To the point and you cover everything. Perfect
That’s very clean work!
Excellent video. Thank you for the detailed video.
Quick and detailed I like it
Great video, Thanks!
Great video. I will do mine soon 😅
Great video. Is it easy changing the harmonic balancer?, it’s starting to wobble a little. Anything else y should swap out since I’m already doing the gasket? TIA
That is the hard way, you just need to remove the crossmember and lower the transfer case. Plenty videos out here...
Don't forget to replace the oil pick up seal at same time
Sir, you gave me a general idea of doing the 2003 GMC Envoy oil pan gasket. But I have a rear wheel drive. You went sooooooooo fast! I’m gonna try it in any case but my truck has no gasket it is sealed with Silicon from factory
this deserves a like. short. sweet. to the point with specs also. much appreciated. gonna have to drop my pan soon for my pickup tube.
Very good
Excellent video! Such a pain in the ass to do though!
Does anyone know if its the same on an astro van. I have a cracked oil pan
Is that the same process on a 2005 model suburban with the 5.3 L ?
Hello this gasket is the same for the 2003 GMC envoy XL 4.2 6 ciliders? Please help
I like how you un clip the trans lines and wiring harness from the bracket on the side of the pan. Other videos unbolt the bracket, which still leaves the nasty thing when it goes back together. Can't stand not to clean it all. One question though, why didn't you pop in a new pick up tube o ring while you were there?
Would have been a good idea!
Will i need alignment?
More of GM's genius engineering here.... After doing all that work and removing so much you may as well just replace the whole damn engine and transfer case instead 😁
oil pick up tube o ring ??
I have seen some videos where they talk about the clearance between oil pan and bell housing. Do you know anything about this?
Inspect gap between oil pan contact points at bottom of pan and transmission, gap should not exceed .010 inch.
was this video one with a 4x4 or 2wd?
Hey! I have my oil pan out it's quite the mess in side, is it ok to use brake cleaner for the inside of the pan?
Yes, brake cleaner will be fine. Just remove any plastic/rubber parts
@@MasterJacks awesome thanks!
So question no judgment completely legitimate how much do you charge to do this exact job but also do the pick up tube O ring too?. Great job btw being so thorough!.
pfft... .... $2k
Which truck is this?
At how many miles would you think about replacing the oil pump while you’re in there?
Just do it, I did it through the front grinding off some small tab with a dremel based on some genius hack I saw on another video dealing with the pick up tube, but would have much rather done all of this if the time allowed. This is my next project though, new front end, oil pan seal, starter etc just like he did it, oil pump would be 2x easier as well with all of this out the way. I also now have a bolt in the bottom of my pan that was a casualty of the pump job.
@@corydoyle4819I put a new, stock high volume pump in it
no rtv on the pan ? just the gasket and the spots u mentioned?
Correct
@@MasterJacks how many bolts hold the diff in? ic 2 on one side and the upper bolt on the driver side
Changed my oil pan and gasket any suggestions on why oil pressure has dropped?
Did you install a new pickup tube oring? If so you may have pinched it
@@carlpavey7167 yes I had to remove the oil pan again and replace the pick up tube o ring. Wish I would have known it was there when I did it the first time. Truck now has about 44 lbs at ideal and 60 ish while driving
@@Jay-zx8fj great glad you got it fixed!
@@carlpavey7167 thanks it was a pain but it's running good now. I can't believe one little o-ring would kill my engine if not taken care of
@@Jay-zx8fj it’s got a relief valve in the pan on some. Right above the oil filter that often fails as well!
Yea I've changed my mind I don't have time for this much work I'll go to the shop instead 😞
While I can't stand oil leaks, guess add some oil when needed, too much work!
I just did my 6.0 and you don’t need to take out the front differential. The only thing you need to do is drop the four bolts in the front diff will drop down and the oil pan will come out with no problem.
Gonna tackle the oil pan pick up tube oring soon on my 2000 6.0. So you're saying just loosen the the bolts and let it drop down a little bit and you have enough clearance to get the pan out? I'll be doing this in the driveway on jackstands. Thanks.
@@user-fu7rk5fw2n yes sir super easy
@@user-fu7rk5fw2n I did it in my garage and it’s easy you can also switch bolt holes for the pic up tube , incase your oil pump goes out you won’t need to re drop oil pan and everything will be set up for you 😎👍🏼👍🏼
@@jroc9840 Cool , thanks for the reply.
.... For an oil pan gasket...
Definitely over kill. Remove crossmember, drop down differential about 6 in you're able to get the pan out.
My GMT800 has 350,000 miles on it. On my life the one thing I have not and probably will never do is fix the damn pan leak properly bc I just dont want to do all of this. Buuut with enough Lucas oil and running GTX high mileage it doesnt leak anymore - like its not even there 👀
You mean the Lucas Stop Leak?
Damn good video, no B. S
Who's a mechanic
Oh hell no. I dont have time for that. 4.8 07 cracked head low oil pressure and...intake M. leak. Sweet all at 180K.
Loosen motor mounts Jack engine up a little.thats all that is needed..DUH!
Where do you place jack to raise engine?
Why is the dealership trying to charge me $3000-4000 to do this??
"Stealership".
They have to squeeze you for everything you got. This is why they remove everything instead of doing it the easier way. I hate dealership pirates.
you do not need to remove the dif all that extra work for nothing at all
Where’s your video on it
What
In other words, don’t buy a GM.
Oh so GM is the only one that needs oil pan gasket replacement after 20 years???
@@mitchbatten8281 Name a vehicle that's easier to work on than a Chevrolet. The guy in the video actually overcomplicates the job. All you have to do is drop the diff 2 inches so it's actually easier than this.
Ho Lee Chit...thats a lot of work....
95% of that part removal is not necessary or really even desirable to make it easier. Crossmenber and lower the axle. Done.
Stupid question....when you say the crossmember for the transmission?...thanks in advance
@@damianmartinez6188 No, there is a crossmember between two points on the frame directly underneath the lowest part of the oil pan. It has to be removed in order to remove the pan.
@@Westbankfireman @J. Reynolds so all I have to do is remove that and I'm clear to access the oil pan for removal? I saw some other videos but they involve removing the front 4wd transfer case. Thanks
