  • Bhargavaram Bhikaji Achrekar was born on July 10, 1910 in Achare village, Malvan taluka of Maharashtra’s Sindhudurg district. A popular Marathi singer-actor of the Natya Sangeet (musical theatre) tradition, he is well known for enacting female roles and was fondly addressed as Mama Achrekar. Bhargavaram spent 12 years, 1924-1936, in the Lalitkaladarsha Natak Mandali, during which time his career in musical theatre rose to unprecedented heights. During this tenure, Bhargavaram was also tutored by eminent personalities such as Pt Panshikar Bua (a Hindustani classical vocalist, trained in the Jaipur gharana), Vishnupant Pagnis (an actor in Marathi theatre whose portrayals of Deval’s Sharada and Shakuntala won him popularity), Kagalkarbuwa and Ramkrishnabuwa Vaze (a Hindustani classical musician of the Gwalior tradition known for his impact on popularising classical music and its impression on Natya Geet in the early half of the 20th century). When Lalitkaladarsha Natak Mandali camped for two years in Mumbai, Bhargavaram received tutelage from Ustad Bashir Khan. These opportunities polished Achrekar’s singing profoundly.

Was in the late 60s-with overbearing commentary from PL that drowns out the natya sangeet. Some of it was published by Alurkar music house . some segments are posted on their you tube page.
