    Blog Post: powermoves.xyz/smart-home/ike...
    Summary:
    The IKEA smart shades are my favorite tech purchase of the year.
    If you have a smart home based around the Apple HomeKit ecosystem, these roller blinds are a must-have because they are the only affordable option.
    I added my smart shades to a few different automations in my house. For example, my shades open each morning at 7 AM to let natural light in my office.
    Another cool automation? When it’s time to shoot a video, I say “Hey Siri, set video,” which turns my two studio lights on, closes the shade, and turns on my Nanoleaf Shapes.
    But there are a few downsides to the IKEA smart shade to consider first:
    Unfortunately, only the blackout version is sold in the states and it only comes in one color: gray. For my house, I preferred blackout, and the gray works with my room's aesthetics, but it's not going to work for everyone.
    You’ll need to purchase a IKEA's bridge for $35 if you want to control these shades with your phone. Otherwise, the only way to control them is with the physical remote.
    While the physical installation is easy, the bridge setup can be painful because it involves pairing four devices to the bridge. Fortunately, this is just a one-time setup. Once the bridge is synced, you can stay in the Apple Home app for control.
    They’re not the best built or the nicest looking, but they’re the most affordable way for Apple HomeKit users to add blinds/shades to a smart home. The closest HomeKit smart shade/blind competitor costs more than $600 (Serena Shades by Lutron), while IKEA's shades are around $180 (w/ the bridge).

    My only gripe is the IKEA blind dimensions are based on total width of roller mechanism, not the blind width. I bought for my measured window width, but a gap of a couple of millimeters each side let some light in. I.e. 36” blind is only 35” of fabric wide.

    • @Bigz28
      @Bigz28 Před rokem

      Hey do you have more info on this ? I’m looking at Ikeas website and it gives measurements of the fabric as well but it seems to include the Total
      Measurement with the rod even though the bottom rod sticks out a bit further .

    • @synony6
      @synony6 Před rokem

      The Australian website gives you blind width. I went into the specs and the roller body length is about 25mm ish longer either side than the blind width. Always check the specs!

    Decided to go for the Lutron Serena. Having a dedicated remote that’s just on a wall next to a light switch is simpler than opening my phone and swiping to HomeKit when entering/leaving a room.
    And most importantly, cheap D batteries last 7 years.

      @@camsecore Hi Cam! I got my blinds set up today with the new gateway, it came with an ethernet cable which needed to be connected to my router, after I did that, I lost my internet connection, error message saying "router can't obtain an ip address from modem". I contacted modem company, router company and comcast, did a bunch of resets finally it was fixed! It's so much easier to connect the new gate way to the blinds, but after I paired it with Alexa, the remotes stopped working. And there are limited commands I can use from Alexa. Looks like I can't ask Alexa to open/close multiple blinds at any percentage together, so I have to say each blind. Two of the four blinds I bought also got tangled several times so far. I love all your videos by the way!!

    Two big problems with these Ikea Smart Shades. 1. The batteries. Charging batteries at the top of window frames is great for young people. Seniors need to run not walk away. Hey, Dad get up on a ladder every 4 months and fiddle with the shade battery. Oops, Dad falls. 2- the hub with 4 wireless connections is a poor technology that will repeatedly fail over time. It's very similar to the Chamberlain garage door opener setup - Hub connects to door opener, connects to door position device and WiFi hub. Those 4 connections go bump in the night because they are flakey with no fail over routines. After years of struggling with Chamberlain, I went back to a remote. You will with Ikea blinds because it gets tiresome to spend 1/2 to an hour making the connections over and over again.

      Ok, battery fails?A. My TV room blinds have been up a year, haven’t had to charge yet. B. I’m a senior. I just setup a second pair in the living room, and one battery needed charging. Windows are floor to about a foot below ceiling. I can reach the top of the blind to remove it Battery is easy to get to and charge.
