Will SonAmy Become Official In Sonic Frontiers?

- The romantic feelings Amy Rose has for Sonic the Hedgehog have always been a part of the two characters' dynamic; since the pink hedgehog's debut, her crush remains unreciprocated. But there have been clues put out there in the lead-up to Sonic Frontiers that make me think there might possibly be a change on the way. This wouldn't be the first time it's been implied that he really does like her back, however; in this video, I'll take a look at those moments as well as the more recent hints and let you know my thoughts on the matter.

Fun fact: in sonic x the French version, Sonic tells Amy he loves her when he gave her a rose, but in the Japanese one he said something but it was muted.
IMO, he definitely likes her back in the X continuity. He just tends to be selective about showing it.
I guess the French dubbers figured they might as well spell it out. XD
Yeah even in the OG japanese version of Sonic X it's pretty obvious that Sonic told Amy that he loves her too. Nothing casual "just friends" stuff about waiting for her at her house with a rose. And what else would he have said there that the Sonic X team would've felt the need to mute Sonic for this one occasion only?
It's a really sweet moment between them. I like the idea that what Sonic said there is a secret between him and Amy. They're kind of like a secret couple!

From what I've heard, Ian Flynn confirmed Sonic does like Amy back but he isn't the type of person to get all romantic about it.

But wasn't he involved with the archie comics? Those are not considered canon so I kinda doubt that the game will have references

I feel like the relationship could work if written properly. Sonic could still be Sonic doing things his way while still making time for his friends like he does.
Yeah. I never felt, at least with Amy, that being in a relationship with her would inherently hold him down and make him inactive. I'll just copy-paste from another reply I wrote: Amy would be just as much up to getting in on the adventure as he is when the situation calls for it, but they can also give each other space when needed as well.
Doubt Sega would have the guts to do this, But it's a nice idea. And Ian Flynn love to play with the idea, and have the characters flirt every once in awhile
I hope that there's some Sonamy moments in Frontiers, especially since it's one of my favourite ships, but I agree that Sega will probably not actually make it an official couple coz it would upset the status quo too much. It would be really cool though if Sonic is more obviously hinted to like Amy back throughout Frontiers, even if they don't become a couple by the end of the game

I like sonamy. Since the two had been around each other for years and over time Amy grew much more mature well depends on the writers. As long as it is not toxic like sonic being an asshole.
Yeah, Amy's been getting much better treatment in the writing department for the most part in the last decade or so. And indeed, if it does happen, I'd hope the relationship is a happy one. Not that I think Sega _would_ make it toxic. XD
Yea I still see ships to this day and the most common one is sonic and Amy maried and it's one of the tamest ships I have seen, it's just sonic and Amy going through parenthood and adulthood

Also is been confirmed many times in the sonic Q&As the main one i can think of was for the Sonic Racers game, where sonic was asked if the reason why sonic runs from Amy is because he doesn't know how to express those type of feelings towards her and is just shy, and it was confirmed by the sonic team ANND the creator of sonic, also he stuttered a lot after being asked that question, and his stuttering gets worse whenever she asked him out to a concert in the recent Q&A

I won't be expecting to see it, but if they do have some sonamy romance stuff in Frontiers, I sure would be surprised and really interested. It could spice things up a bit.
Interesting speculations dude :) I'd be happy to roll with it either way, though you're right that it'd be tough to break the status quo on this one, since the one-sided Sonic Chases Amy is such a strongly associated trope to these characters at this point. Amy's been slowly getting better about not "overdoing it" in that last decade of games and stories but people that don't like Amy as a character still seem to talk most about how she was in the beginning where she was kind of possessive and angry xD There's been development with her over time that I do think makes a change possible!
...And all I gotta say is that I listened to Vandalize on loop for like a whole day, but it was the USA release version, so when I was out jogging to music and I unwittingly heard the uncensored international release with THE BIG F WORDS in them I had to stop running because I laughed pretty hard. He even says "MY BED IS IN RUINS" omg... After a whole day of hearing the lyric as "Fight the pain away, my head is in ruins" it took me way off guard xD
For sure, Amy's been getting some good treatment lately and I think the divisiveness over her character's kinda been leaning towards the positive side in the fandom in the last few years. And thank goodness for that; there's a whole lot more to her than the bad depictions in X or Heroes or whatever that makes her a great character. Even (and especially, in some cases) in the old stuff

That's part of the whole deal with Sonic being "more mature" now with a deep voice. They won't break the status quo but they might postpone it.
Frontiers may end up with Sonic being definiteively separated for a while, trapped in another dimension and kinda pass on the mantle, becoming more like the wind, or an idea. At least as of you play up to the Any% run ending, and get booted back into the main screen listening to "I'm here" again.
Maybe after some very Rolling Girl like ambiance and unlocking the final ending through an NG+, things will change.
Honestly I love the status quo to change and I think this game setting is perfect for it as in this sense sonics friends are basically dead and Amy being one of the only one actively helping him and him being alone again after so long will get him thinking on his life and the choices he made and make him finally decide to meet Amy halfway (I mention the alone cause sonic never been alone on a adventure since sonic one and cd)

I'm A huge SonAmy fan but personally I don't think it'll ever become cannon, or at least I don't think Sonic will ever be openly romantic with Amy. It'll probably just continue to be something that they tease us with occasionally.
I've gotten my hopes up about it before with Frontiers, just to have been told "think of the mandates" and have my excitement be shot down so I'm not gonna make that mistake again.
If this actually happens the fandom will go crazy, more than normal I mean, it's actually a really dangerous move, not saying is a wrong one, just dangerous

Personally I think it will just be small things here and there for now and then build it up over more games and even comics. I feel that in the end the ship will sail but it will be a long time coming.
Whether SEGA confirms SonAmy or not I hope Amy serves as a vital role to Sonic in his adventures. Just like how Chip served Sonic in his adventures during Sonic Unleashed.

I’m really glad you made this video it really put a smile on my face. This is my favorite ship in the entire franchise and it seems to have been getting more respect from people. Sonic and Amy has had so many different depictions and the best ones like the Boom, IDW comics, and a few games like Black Night ,Unleashed, and probably Frontiers will only prove there friendship growing stronger and possibly become something more. Even if that doesn’t happen I’ll still enjoy whatever this new game has in store for these two.❤

I think it all comes down to this. One thing super hero fan such as myself love about superheros is the romance and the part where he/ she gets the girl/ guy
And since that's what alot of Sonic fans and writers alike would like too see more of in the Sonic universe for Sonic and since most of those same fans and writers ship or lead towards sonamy. And since rule number 1 is to try and give the fans what they want
Even if it isn't official now or even on Frontiers. It definitely won't be long till it is

I think that Sonic and Amy have different types of feelings for each other because Sonic is nervous to tell Amy about his feelings and she knows that he is nervous to tell her but no matter what she will still love him because she will fight till her life just to be with him and she would risk her life for him because she loves him so much. This also relates to Doki Doki Literature Club, Miraculous Tales of Ladybug and Chat Noir, and Naruto.

Sonic has never ever been a character to tie down to anybody, his number 1 priority is adventure and speed. Sonic never showed romantic attraction towards Amy till recent games and other medias, which okay fine, but I do not think they should be canon.
Headcanons exist ofc, but if this does become canon, not only will the fandom not shut up abt this, but also shipping wars will absolutely EXPLODE.

I agree with you Skull, I doubt SEGA will "sail" the SonAmy ship officially. To me it really doesn't matter all THAT much as long as they do whatever they may properly. Sonic's always been about freedom and going fast, so I personally don't see him letting a relationship "slow him down" - but then again Amy may indeed be able to keep up at a pace acceptable to him.

sonic unleashed post game side quest you can talk to amy and she will ask sonic on a date, you can answer yes or no
if you say yes amy will says that she can't wait for it, next game of the series was sonic and the black knight in the beginning of the game sonic is summoned to another world and he has two chili dogs at hand, when you finish the game in the post credits you can see sonic and amy arguing cause sonic missed the date... sonic tries to explain that he got summoned to another dimension but she doesn't believe in him and get even more angry...

I really hope it does, but I don’t want it like sonic and Sally’s relationship that they are kissing like every time you see them on screen like in sat am or the og sonic show.(I haven’t watched both of those shows in YEARS but all I remember is sally and sonic kissing most of the time they were on screen, it was like “get a room already” 😶 I saw it when I was in 3rd grade like when I was 6-8 so if I watch the show again I’ll probably see their relationship from another perspective now that I’m older. So I’m probably wrong about sonally, so if it wasn’t like that PLEASE correct me) but want them to actually SHOW they care about each-other like they always do! Only that sonic actually SHOWS he likes Amy. It’s been confirmed, ik. but as they said he dosent really show it. But in this game I want him to show it but that isn’t out of his character, that’s all. I really hope other then sonamy the game will be very good as-well that’s really all I wish for this game.
While sonamy is not my otp (my otp is basically canonically impossible in a heteronormative society) I figured that if sega would allow sonic to canonically date anyone it would probably be her. Will Sonic and Amy actually ever show clear romantic feelings for eachother in frontiers and make sonamy canon? If they did I would be VERY surprised. Considering as we haven't seen any sonic "canon" actually be romantic with anyone since the Archie comics or 06 if you only go by the games.
Having said that, I would be off the walls thrilled just to see sonic romantic with ALMOST anyone.

Sonic might be on the spectrum of aromantic/asexual, so he might like Amy back but doesn't act too romantically.

I kinda hope not. Not a huge fan of sonamy, and it's really not my cup of tea. But I'll be completely chilled, if it somehow becomes canon. Because I love ships, but I won't throw a fit over one I don't like (and might as well say this; I'm heavily sure the reason why I don't like it, might be that I'm more sonally guy; and just think Sally would be a better fit for Sonic. Ngl, I prefer neither sonally or sonamy. Sonaze in rush was more developed than any other ship involving sonic, and black knight even heavily hints that blaze likes sonic. But who am I kidding...sonaze is nothing but a pipe dream due to Sega forgetting blaze's existence for so long and just pushing sonamy onto us even more than it deserves.

sonic will never actually get with Amy. sonic lives in the moment, a love interest would only slow him down. sonic and Amy can still have their dynamic, even let sonic have the "secret crush" he has in some media, but the could never be an official couple.

Sonic is constantly having to stop Eggman, and when he isn't doing that he is running around traveling and doing what he wants. Sonic just wouldn't have enough time to be anything more than friends.

No I don't think it will happen because of SEGA mandates and Ian Flynn already confirmed that won't happen. There might be some more hints and jokes though in game, that's it though.
However I would like it to happen someday, I just don't want it to be rushed and I want it to be executed properly, I think it would really develop both the characters and could make the story more interesting. Sadly I think SEGA is too scared to do it.
