SonAmy In Sonic Frontiers: The Answer

- Last month, I uploaded a video taking a dive into Sega's seemingly increasing amount of SonAmy teases, speculating if they would actually become a couple in Sonic Frontiers. Now that the game has been released, I thought it'd be fun to follow up and see if there's any more teases or, even still, some kind of confirmation of their relationship.

I also liked the knuckles scene where sonic realized that knuckles isn't happy and should just sit by him

Yeah, when I saw lots of those cutscenes I was like: "this is beautiful" especially on the part where So ic says that she cares about Amy, that hit really hard on my heart since I do love the ship (this my opinion). Good thing the two favorite hedgehogs get their moments finally.

While I don't think SonAmy will ever actually be confirmed canon. I'd like to think both of them mellowed out a bit, and are in sort of an unspoken relationship. Amy isn't as obsessed with Sonic as she used to be, and Sonic isn't so against the idea anymore cuz he knows Amy would respect his way of life.

Honestly, it doesn't matter if this confirms anything or not, just that one scene where they hug was good enough for me, like, this is probably the closest thing to SonAmy SEGA will possibly give us 😁

The closest is actually sonic chronicles cuz you can literally make sonamy a thing there
One of the things I like about sonamy is that when it works it usually is subtle and slightly ambiguous. So even if it's not confirmed Canon, I can still appreciate it and see what I wanted out of their dialogue. Meanwhile, people who dislike it can just ignore it and see it as a more platonic relationship. Subtlety is key to executing sonamy in my opinion, so all in all if is isn't going to be Canon then at least we feel validated.

I mean, each of the Koco storylines parallel the characters.
Amy’s respective Koco was about love.
Honestly I feel like the “I wish I had made up my mind sooner” is what confirms it.
You could argue that he’s “made up his mind that he only sees her as a friend” but that doesn’t really make sense story wise.
The other stuff is subtle.
A lot of the writing in frontiers feels like it’s preparing us for future games, with Knuckles having an established reason to be away from the Master Emerald, Tails going on his own adventures-STICKS AND TANGLE ARE BOTH OFFICIALLY CANON WHICH BRINGS ME GREAT JOY!!!

It feels like while they clearly aren’t together in this game, it’s establishing the spark that might have ignited something in future games to come.
Certainly does give the indication that they're setting up future games, for sure

And there's also literally no chance in hell that them teasing Sticks at the end, were just some "mistakes in writing" because that's just a load of bs.
The closest we’ve ever gotten to SonAmy becoming a thing was in Sonic boom. But at the end of frontiers, amy makes a remark about sticks, and she was introduced in the boom series. And as many may know, sonic had shown affection for Amy on multiple occasions in that show so assuming those feelings are still there wouldn’t be too far off.
Seems like they're taking a few cues from Boom in terms of characterization, as well, if the Twitter Takeover was any indication. Not exactly 100% but it's there
Now that The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog is out, I feel like pointing out that several of Sonic and Amy's interactions in that game seemed quite Boom-like to me.
Honestly, part of me like to think they're together but in a private life, just like Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse being married in a private life
The part that made me laugh was when Sonic said that Tails can "fly with your butt". To me, that was a cute nod to the second movie.
"Uh, did your butt just turn into a helicopter?" 🤣🤣

Dosen't matter if they are in a relationship or not, at least we have Sonic actually say out loud that he has feelings for her. The ship can still be canon even if they're not in an actual relationship

Though SonAmy most probably won't be *fully* canon any time soon, if Sonic *ever* gets into a relationship, he'll mostly likely end up with Amy.

I would say their interactions in Frontiers indicates they are JUST teetering on becoming a couple. Now, please hear me out, I think it might be confirmed in the next game. Izuka has said he wants to work on a Sonic Adventure 3 after Frontiers, and I can't think of a better game to confirm SonAmy. The series that not only showed how to do Sonic in the 3rd dimension correctly but also is beloved by a LOT of Sonic fans? Sounds like the game to do it!
Would love a Sonic Adventure 3. Dunno about SonAmy but I think the way Frontiers ended could serve as a good lead-in. Everyone going their separate ways for a bit? Sounds like a good excuse to have multiple different stories and characters to play in such a game.
@@skull902 I mean, they are getting back together for the game. Maybe if we play with both Amy and Sonic, we might get further insight into how they both feel about one another.
RIGHT? Ian broke sooo many mandates for this story. And Iizuka said they were planning on moving in this direction for the next decade. SONAMY has already been canon, but they’re showing it and I love to see it

I like to think they're together off camera judging by what they do on camera lol. Closest thing I can get to satisfaction and it being canon lol.
The term "off-camera" gave me the idea of the cast all being celebrities that star in the games. Would be an interesting AU. XD

"Unofficially official" is what I was expecting as well, and I'm actually fine with that. Definitive confirmations or not, these are the strongest hints we've gotten in quite some time. It essentially means that these two are now on the same level as Mario and Peach, or (most incarnations of) Link and Zelda. Hell, you could cite examples from this same franchise: Knuckles and Rouge have been making "unofficially official" work for them for over 20 years, and that's pretty much how Sonic and Amy themselves were handled in the Sonic Boom TV series. It could very well be that SEGA one day decides to give them a proper relationship upgrade (considering some of the other things that happened in Frontiers, like giving Eggman a daughter that he truly loves and actually allowing her to stick around, I wouldn't rule out any possibility), but at least for the time being, the shipper in me is satisfied.
Really like the comparisons to Mario/Peach and Link/Zelda. Should've thought to use that in the video. XD
Otherwise yeah, I think them playing it safe with it here was a good idea. Maybe there could be more, but maybe not, and that's perfectly okay
Honestly I really like their relationship in the adventure games yes even though Sonic can be a jerk and Amy can be a little annoying sometimes but I could still tell that they really cared about each other
Fun fact: there are actual romantic interactions with sonic and amy in Sonic X and i think in sonic and the black knight he was supposed to go on a date with her or something

Oh yeah, they've certainly had moments in the past. In X it's honestly to the point I think he likes her back in that continuity. XD
They did a little fun bit in Unleashed and Black Knight; before Frontiers it was the hardest the games themselves had gone with them

The scenes are so adorable
Welp sega in one of the answers book confirmed that sonic have feelings for amy but he is too shy and afraid to say them . And the original japanese maker of sonic caracter said that sonic still have a boy heart and when he will have a man heart he will definitely choose amy . Also in one of the team work interviews they asked a question about why sonic don't show his feelings to amy and the voice actor was too shy to answer and run away . So it's kind of sonamy is canon in a non direct way

No, this isn’t just for them to “hint”. This is a game where they are testing out the couple to give us more in the future. SEGA understands that their fanbase are tired of waiting. In the next game, they’re more likely to become a couple. It’s not “up for interpretation”. These moments are here for a reason. It’s clear and in plain sight. Stop discrediting what is already legit.
There’s a reason why they removed the ages of the characters. So haters won’t complain about Sonic and Amy’s age gap (which wasn’t even a problem to begin with).
There is a reason why Amy is more toned down with her love toward Sonic (again, it was never a problem to begin with. Showing affection doesn’t equate to immaturity). It’s so you haters can stop complaining about Amy being annoying.
There’s a reason why SEGA is doing this. Majority of their fanbase are SonAmy fans. They are trying to make it more popular in the west because most of their fans are in Asia (which is why they cater Sonic stuff more to them).
Again, we can lead a horse to water, but we can’t make it drink. Whatever. SEGA Japan already confirmed Amy is Sonic’s girlfriend. 😂
I mean, it's hints and up to interpretation because _as far as I've seen,_ there still hasn't been any official word on their current status as it relates to the games. There's the quotes that were provided by Yuji Naka and whichever Sega employee it was who gave a positive answer to that Disney magazine, but those sources are _many_ years old now (if you wanna bring up Evan Stanley's comment, that I think relates exclusively to the comics if they are indeed still separate continuities) and the creative direction of Sonic has been all over the place since then. Now that it looks like they're really trying to focus on making everything consistent with this new direction, that's what these videos are talking about is all the moments this new team has been teasing the two with without ever outright confirming _or denying_ anything.
I'm not diminishing what they're doing here; it's just _in my opinion_ I think the answer for right now is "maybe". I'm also not out here to attack anyone for liking or disliking the ship. Unless it's a truly fucked up ship, I am all for people being able to wanna see whatever pairs they like being together whether I personally think the characters would work or not (and for the record, I _have_ stated before that I think Sonic and Amy can definitely work). Trying to deny people their ships is immature and that's certainly not the point of this video or the one before it, much the opposite.

The whole appeal and essence of Sonany is the fact that it’s an unanswered question. It’s what keeps us on our toes about it all. We want it to be official so badly but once that happens, we’ll be shipping an entirely new dynamic - an “officially together” one. But Sonamy has always been about the chase; that’s what’s exciting. I hope SEGA never makes it official in a game. I hope it always stays this way - knowing they feel the same way and possibly already having a secret relationship

This is one of the few examples where I don’t really need them to be canon canon - as in I am fine with them not being in a relationship, just knowing their feelings for each other are mutual is enough.
Which is weird to say considering I’ve shipped them for nearly 20 years by now. But seriously as long as we keep getting interactions like we did in Frontiers, I’m more than happy.
It's an interesting way to go about it, for sure. If that's officially what they're going with, it'd be tough I imagine to make that a permanent thing however, especially since they're trying to establish, maintain, and build on continuity.

Plot twist: When Amy comes back to tell Sonic about her adventures, Sonic has ended up hooking up with Rouge.

@@skull902 Rouge is actually the person I'd see Sonic the most realistically having a relationship with, since with someone like Amy; I could imagine her wanting to be with Sonic and go on his adventures and while I think that would go fine at the start, it would eventually feel like Sonic is anchored towards Amy and she's just weight since she's not as fast or as agile as him even with how much Amy loves adventure. While I don't think Rouge would be able to keep up with Sonic, she values Freedom like him so I imagine that the relationship would be very casual and they wouldn't get in eachother's way and would just find time every once and a while to go on something romantic. I also could see some good banter and character interactions between them because Rouge has never had to interact with someone as confident and as cocky as Sonic so her usual flirtatious attitude won't work, in fact; I could see Sonic end up making Rouge flustered instead, shaking up where she'd usually be when interacting with someone.

@@skull902 I think the only incarnation of Amy I could see getting with Sonic is the IDW comics; because even in the first couple issues, the two bantered in a way where they felt like genuine friends even past what Frontiers established with it's greater span of time with the two characters.
Honestly at the moment, I don't see Sonic getting into a relationship with anyone due to his love of adventure and not being tied down by anything, he'd need someone who'd love Adventure but also fast enough to keep up.
The closest I can think of is being Blaze but she's ultimately tied down by her responsibility of her Kingdom and protecting the Sol Emeralds. I could see Sonic hanging out with Blaze and her having more fun than ever going out with Sonic on adventures only to realize that it's dragged her away from her duty and the two have to end up having a sad conversation that while Blaze loved her adventures, she can't give up her responsibilities to continue running around with Sonic. And I think Sonic would feel sad because he was finally enjoying his adventures with someone fully and now he has to go back to adventuring alone.

Sonic and Amy will never be a couple
My personal take is that this ship makes the most sense in canon. I’ve known many people whether they only know parsley about the Sonic Franchise or they’ve only seen a bit of it, either think these two have crushes on each other. Or they’re already girlfriend and boyfriend even when they’re not. They both do canonically have crushes on each other. So, I’d say that’s close enough. 💙🩷
