  • On the 4th August 2002, school friends Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman left the house dressed in matching Manchester United football shirts - they never returned. Their disappearance led to nationwide attention, ending with the conviction of school caretaker Ian Huntley. Huntley had brazelly put himself at the centre of the media attention before the remains of the girls had even been found - something that still intrigues Criminologist David Wilson to this day and at the time baffled former Detective Chief Inspector Martyn Underhill, who took part in the investigation. Both joined us today.

The whole life order tariff didn’t exist then. It was only enacted in December that year for crimes committed after then.

Mrs H ....That thing took the lives of two innocent young girls...He hurt they families and close friends...He hurt his own daughter... He effected so many lives...Lives that will never heal...He said he was sorry..🙄 I don't care how many Sorries he says..That thing doesn't deserve to breath... Sorry but that how I feel .. No one can ever recover over the death of a child more so of a murdered child... I have no doubt that the Police on this case struggle with what he did...So much misery that thing caused..!

I don't think so. They didn't know his past as none of his previous crimes against children had ever been prosecuted. CRB checks as we know them today were introduced in 2002, in part because of the Soham murders and the Bichard Inquiry that followed. The school couldn't have known.
