Item splitters already exist but I think they're bulkier. The pot version could work if, when you're down to one item in the pot, you lock the hopper under it to give other items elsewhere in the top container a chance to go through. Just a couple ticks pause should be enough.

    • @T-035
      @T-035 Před 7 měsíci +120

Additionally you can use them to sort items that aren't stacked in 64. For example snowballs and buckets. It works without any delay (except for the time it takes hoppers to do their thing)

I think the issue is that Decorative Pots can't 'pull' items, they have to be fed by a Hopper. Even if you lock the outgoing Hopper to leave a single item, there's still nowhere for the items in the incoming Hopper to go.

The item splitter you created is actually extremely useful to increase the speed of automatic sorting systems (they did exist already but your design is way simpler). Without splitting, you can only dispense 2.5 items per second into a sorting system due to hopper speed, but if you split the items and for each type of item dispense 2.5 per second multiple slices of the sorting system can run in parallel because any single type of item will only be dispensed at hopper speed (assuming that there is a workaround to the item order issue creating multiple shulker boxes for the same item; for this use case there might be some method like before beginning to unload a shulker box checking whether the item is already being unloaded, perhaps using more pots).

the decorated pot makes the sorting side of compacting blocks(in the crafter) easier. if you have a system in your mine that takes all the resources(gold, copper and iron ore, lapis, redstone & diamonds) you collected and condenses them down into blocks, that may well have a use as you don't want blocks of different types to mix in the crafter and want to know when the item type switched. It's a niche one, but it's a use!

I still think trap pots need to be a thing. Basically if you break it while it has TnT, lava, fire charges, splash potions, water, or even ender pearls inside they end up activating immediately upon the pot breaking. With each doing what you'd expect, including ender pearls immediately teleporting you back to the pot in question. Very, very multiplier or restone railway centered use, but I think it'd be cool.
At least that use would end up playing redstone's ability to give you quick transportation and set up horrible traps.

My first thought was to use the pots in a super smelter that uses hopper minecarts for item distribution. Currently there isn't a way to get exact stacks of items using signal strength; you're always going to get a little over or a little under. With the pots, you can use this system to lock them until they fill up with exactly one stack, then unlock to add them to the hopper minecart for distribution. No overages, no partial loads, guaranteed perfect distribution for fuel usage.

The shulker thing might get rid of the need for item sorters entirely for mixed-item farms, as long as enough shulker boxes are provided... and each chest doesn't "block" an item from getting in - like, if you have an industrial district, at the moment, you need a bulky storage system even for items you want to carry by the shulker, meaning you need to sort the items first, then come there with empty shulker boxes and fill them.
Now, you could use the new pots to fill shulkerboxes immeadiately, then just grab the boxes you need out of bulk chests.
Now to think if there is a way to sort shulkers by type and you get a storage system that only needs one shulker loader upfront instead of one for each item type your industrial district may produce...

The problem would be non-stackable items. With this system I believe each non-stackable would get its own shulker. I guess it's possible to sort out the non-stackables first and send them to their own shulker loader, but it would make the whole thing a lot bulkier. @@Huntraconygood point, non-stackables are a bit of a problem here, however you would need a filter for any non-stackable items regardless, so this would still be a net-reduction of space used as it would get rid of all filters for stackable items - reducing the currently O(n) problem of sorting stackable items to a O(1) problem - only needing additional filters if you have non-stackables and a way to sort these non-stackables (regarding space)
Unless the plan is to keep non-stackables mixed in overflow, in which case we still have a O(1) problem of using a "non-stackable" - filter and this new system (once the stack order flaw is solved), turning the sorting system of any industrial district regardless of item count to a constant.

So you're correct that it can't tell (on its own) the difference between a pot containing 2/3/4 items. It could still be useful if the specific numbers you want to differentiate happen to be the ones that tick up its comparator power.
A pot does probably do something other storage containers don't: force a player to insert items one at a time. Since it makes an animation when it does so, I'm guessing that it will pulse an observer every time it gets an input. Hook that up to a counter and something that triggers based on the count after a certain amount of time from first insertion, and you could count exact numbers. This is of course assuming that you can't insert faster than 1 tick, which I'm not sure is true; if so, it would probably be much more reliable to use hoppers beneath a different storage set up to pulse once for every item inserted (more redstone than a pot +an observer to do so, but certainly possible) and hook that up to the same counter/timer circuit.

Once there's none left, what's in the hopper will flow into the pot, then into the shulker, and then once the pot's empty you lock the output hopper and break the shulker to move on to the next shulker to fill with whatever's now in the first full slot in the input hopper.

But its not chest nor pot that do pulking or pushing. Its hopper between them. If you have 6 different items types in input chest (1. Item, then 5 other items then 1.item again) your hopper will fill with those 5 others and will not be able to pull the other stack, so it will not push them either. In worst case scenario you can have 26 different items in a single chest (and one repeat) so you would need minimal of 6 different hooopers trying to feed the pot but that is imposible - there is space only on 4 sides plus 1 from top.

5:30 OH you could have a system where it takes a bunch of junk from looting, sorts it into separate boxes, and then sorts those into groups based on theme. It sounds like just an extra step on paper, but the sorting by theme would have more possibility for variety because depending on what your exact storage needs are you could determine whether you want it in shulker form or item form. I can't think of any good distinctions off of the top of my head but I'm sure there could be some uses to that.

With the functionality of the pot, you could theoretically condense storage silos tons and save so many resources. You put all you items into a pot, and they could either filter as many items as possible through one pot or have an individual pot for every item that you regularly collect with hoppers under them that fills a chest. All you would have to do is figure out how to stop a pot from putting its items into a hopper.

You somehow lock the last 4 slots of the hopper between the chest and the pot. Then you let the items build up to at least 2, before starting to suck them out. That way the hopper will only try to suck out the items in the first slot out of the chest, meaning it will priorotize that item over other items in the chest, even if they are slot 3, 6, or 27 in the chest.

This will work well for taking correct items for payment at a store, you just have to count how many you need as well.
Edit: Just in case you need it. Have a pot with hopper beneath pushing in to a barrel or chest. Then in a 1X2X4 area behind the hopper and pot, place a block behind the hopper with a repeater pointing into it, and 2 redstone dust behind that. On top of the dirt behind the hopper, place a comparator, comapring the pot. Then add a block above the repeater and add another block heading further back. Place two redstone dust on top of those blocks and a redstone torch on the back of the last block. The redsone torch should be over the last redstone dust on the bottom. The pot will always have 5 items before any items get to the chest. Then you just need a counter to check the correct amount.

I think I can mathematically proove that the order problem can not be solved without loop-back: if there is a gap of 5 stacks, the hopper will fill the pot with one stack (or less) of the item, then fill up with different items, so slowing down output alone won't help unless we have continuing input. However, if we loop back the already sorted items as long as their shulker box isn't full, we can guarantee that continuing stream , creating a situation where a stack plus 1 can be guaranteed in the system as soon as no other items are in-between...
The hopper feeding the pot must fill up including at least one of the currently sorted item to combat the order issue.

This system will then try to squeeze around 20 different stacks of item in the pot. Its not a flawless fix but it will drastically reduce the chance of creating 2 shulker boxes for the same material.

Hey @ThatMumboJumbo - I had a play in the 23w42a snapshot with the new crafter and came up with a solution to the unreliable ordering issue some have mentioned by locking the initial line of input hoppers with torches, and releasing them sequentially with 1 progressively longer delay on each repeater input turning off the torches in order. It needed a 1 tick pulse generator to correctly trigger and not let more than 1 item out at a time, and the first repeater therefore had to be in position 2 to pass on the pulse, but it otherwise works reliably.
Then expanded it by adding a comparator to the crafter to detect when all slots were full and loop back a pulse to trigger crafting, but also kick off another cycle by triggering the pulse generator with the same output from the comparator.
Put a multi-input AND gate on comparators out of the chests on top of the input hoppers and run that into another AND gate alongside the 'start' button/crafter trigger, and you can stop the cycle when any of the input chests run out, to prevent a 'half baked' set of items entering the crafter. Refill the empty chest and hit the button and off it goes again until something runs out.
Happy to share my untidy version for you to laugh at then refactor as I'm under no illusion that you could infintely refine and make it smaller than 11x18x4 and probably also tile, but you've probably already got ideas and can visualise what I'm doing from the decription above (I hope!) - Combine it with an item sorter or hook it up to a storage system feeding the various inputs and you could have multiple recipes crafted and returned to the storage perpetually while there is available resources for each recipe.
I'm also in no doubt that you could use the kinds of logic that is used by the likes of @MrKorwaldski to select blocks using encoders and music disks which could also be used in a much simpler way to define and encode recipes and output the right blocks in the right order into a single 9 hopper line and single crafter per 'shape' to allow the 'any item' crafting that people are suggesting...

It's been done using VARIABLE item filters ( item filters that can automatically switch which item they're sorting ). They're quite bulky compared to your design but they don't suffer from "the different item problem" . It's called "shulker box splitter". So I guess "everything in redstone is a compromise" holds true.

As soon as this gets added into the game, I'm going to spend an hour filling pots. The noise and the jiggle make my brain happy.
