Europe's Slab City... No Laws, No Filming, Anarchy?

- I visited what some say is Europe's Slab City, this Anarchist settlement was created over 50 years ago in the heart of Copenhagen, Denmark. An area within the city that is self governed, with no laws and up until recently the home of Europe's largest open air drug market, that was at the centre of numerous criminal and violent activities. Welcome to Freetown Christiania.

I still find it interesting that cannabis is still illegal in most European countries. I'm from Canada and recreational cannabis has been legal since 2018. It's not a big deal here anymore.
Been looking forward to seeing this Joe fantastic coverage ❤❤
Glad you enjoyed it 🙏👍 thanks for watching and the comment
What a fabulous spot to visit. Marvellous artwork about the place. Christania is quite inspirational
Thank you Joe, I liked the residential area, I hope the people in the tent by the lake were keeping warm
Likewise it was so peaceful! I can assure you the people of Christiania wouldn't let him or anyone go cold. Genuinely an amazing little community there. Certainly not what I was expecting.
Hey 👋🏼 JoeFish 😊
This was an excellent video 👏👏👏. I really enjoyed this one a lot!
It might be one of my favorites so far. You’re getting better and better with each new video.
I Never even heard about this place. Thank you JoeFish. Blessings from, California, Carlos
Hey Carlos, thanks for watching and the kind words! Glad you enjoyed it. Was a very unique place for sure! See you on the next one 👍🙏
Absolutely brilliant video JOE thank you so much drinking my coffee and watching your video love it. I wish they would legalize marijuana in your country. I live in Northern California and it is legal here. It’s taxed and sold. Thanks for your hard work JOE keep up the good work, my friend we love you here in northern California.🙏💙💯🇺🇸🏴
Hi Thomas!
I'm a local & I also wish they would legalize here in Denmark. It's also still illegal in Joe's home country UK.
PS: During the recent transformation of Christiania's Pusher Street, our "justice minister" decided to not legalize, but double the fine from 2,000 DKK to 4,000 DKK for buying or selling in Pusher St. , and the second time caught means jailtime.😤 Sigh!😞 Banning doesn't work, but they can't see that yet. Even Germany has legalized, a country I thought was more conservative than us.
Hey dude 👋
Thanks for the kind words and for watching! Was the total opposite of what I was told to expect from Christiania! Will definitely go back oneday, see you on the next one! 👊🙏
Legalization isn't the godsend people seem to think it is. Decriminalization is a far better option. Amsterdam wants to make it illegal for non residents because of the types of people who go to Amsterdam to use. It is why here in Prague it will never be legalized. The people don't want what happened in Amsterdam here. Decriminalization keeps it to local users and prevents the tourists who would come here to use. It's bad enough so many from the Uk come here for cheap drinking holidays and act like Prague is Blackpool.
@@stevemcgowen
Well, I agree, decriminalization would be better, so trade wouldn't be dependent on the State.
But still, imagine the tax money it could collect, to build hospitals, clinics to help those in need, information campaigns instead of bans,
*and* free resources for the police to catch _real_ criminals.
@@drumstick74those things have never happened where full legalization has taken place. It has only gotten worse with hard dru-s. The pot dealers just switch to hero-n. Look at San Francisco, Portland, Vancouver, Amsterdam…
Great content Joe. I went there in the eighties, my main memory was of chaotic drug tourism and petty crime. A lot Hells Angels and junkies basically. Seems quite quiet now in comparison, maybe because it was so cold on the day you visited? Try it again at night in the height of summer, see if it's still so mellow.
Great choice of subject mate.
Yes I can imagine! There's numerous old signs saying no bikers colours now I know why! Thanks for watching and the comment 👍
@@JoefishJ
Years ago there was a quite violent war between various Scandanavian biker gangs and organised criminal gangs, involving the control of the drug trade, the illegal importation of Harley Davidson motorcycles via Portugal and (after the various violent struggles in the former Yugoslavia) unlicensed weapons coming up from the Balkans.
There were various murders and well publicised violent clashes all over Northern Europe. Neutral biker gangs were coerced into taking sides. Christiania was a focal point for a lot of this, so you can see why the locals were so dead-set on removing that threat within their community. It was an extremely dark time for the 'alternative lifestyle' communities as, for a long time, the police seemed to be powerless to stop it all escalating.
I'm very happy to see that the people of Christiania have finally succeeded in moving on from this era of chaos. Well done Chritiania and well done you for having the guts to go there and see first hand what is going on now.
Keep the good content coming mate, especially the alternative lifestyle stuff, you're doing a great job. Maybe try Stone Henge for the Summer Solstice?
Keep the videos up mate, I came across your channel a few months ago… originally from Manchester but living over in Perth, Australia so it’s nice to see updates of the UK & Europe!
Keep them coming 📈
Harriet and I visited Christiania about fifteen years ago. Just before it was overwhelmed by violence and crime. The question we ask is ? Is there a future going forward for Christiana?
One wonders? It's a lovely utopian society that we only dream about. Wonderful video Joe. All the best mate👍👍 Jim and Harriet
Hey guys 👋 yes that's what I heard the violence began around 15years ago and escalated! It's a wonderful place I really enjoyed my time and it's very relaxed now the problems have been removed. Thanks for watching and the comment 👍🙏
Brilliant. Really informative, and what a place! 👍
Awesome thanks for watching and the comment 🙏👍
Glad you made it, Joe! I will meet you next time you are here.👍
It was good as long as it lasted (Pusher Street). Normally there would be no problems, and even though police sometimes came by, they sort of accepted it for many years. However, in the past 10-20 years, gun toting gangs started taking over, making it a rough scene with occasional (rare) gun violence. That was the final straw for the inhabitants, police and the authorities.
One thing I have to correct: Hard drugs were *banned* on Pusher Street, only weed and hash was sold. If anyone tried to sell hard drugs, they would be escorted to the exit, and perhaps get a beating for not upholding the Christiania law of No Hard Drugs on the premises.
🌱Legalize! 🌿
Hey mate!
Yes definitely meet next time, I'm going to be back soon for sure. Really enjoyed my time in Denmark 👍 thanks for the suggestions. See you on the next one
@@JoefishJ
You're welcome, and I'm glad you liked it here! 💛One thing I'd like to add is how few people you encountered when in there. I haven't visited for some months, and even in winter it was usually _packed_ in the main area, and a more vibrant, loud atmosphere...whenever the cops are there, they tend to spoil the good vibes...but "they're just doing their job". The guy at 17:54 asked the cops "Det er cheferne der er i byen?" (= "The bosses are in town?"
Not sure if he was just having a laugh.
Omg I think I just found my spiritual home! 😍😍😍 I love how they reclaimed it. True people power!
Yes really inspiring stuff! Thanks for watching and the comment it's a very unique place for sure
Love your videos. Can't wait to see the next one!
Your experience was different to mine! I was there when Pusher Street was still there and the second you walk onto that street you would be bombarded with people trying to sell you drugs. The whole time I felt somewhat uneasy, and I got myself a coffee from one of the cafe's, and remember thinking it was the worse coffee ever 😅
I was actually relieved to get out of there, but by the looks of it, the area has cleared up a lot since, which is good to see.
Great video as always, mate.
Totally different place now they've reclaimed the street for the community, heard some bad stories whilst there that obviously couldn't mention on the Tube. Thanks for watching mate 👍🙏
I couldn't really see if the residents were good looking, but heard the bird song. Nice insight into a unique place.
Thanks for watching and the comment! A lovely experience
That is really interesting. I could see that area going up in the 70s, just part of that time and history. People were willing to express themselves. Denmark is considered the happiest place in the world for a reason.
Great video Joe!! Much love from Cali!!
🙏 thanks for the kind words
Very interesting video Joe, never heard of this place before
Thanks Uncle T. A very bizarre experience for sure!
Thank you for showing us this place. I didn't know it existed at all.
Neither did I until I was researching different places in Europe. If you get the chance check it out 👍
@@JoefishJ Sure, thanks. Looking forward to the next one.
Great video 💯❤️
Thanks 🙏 glad you enjoyed it 👍
RIP pusher street 😢 Sad to see the life get sucked out of this place.
Like a ghost town, I visited 10days after it's closure. Thanks for watching
Thanks for shining a positive light on Christiania and sharing your insight without judgement. Keep up the great videos!
That's awesome thanks for the kind words 🙏 Please share the video with any like minded folk! Will help out a lot! Thanks for watching and the support 👍
Love your content mate and watching your channel grow. Keep it up bro 💪 💯
That's awesome to hear 🙏 thank you!
Another banger of a video Joe 🔥
Awesome thanks for watching! Glad you enjoyed it 👍🙏
Hi Joe, really enjoyed your video ☺️ ,so good to see that Christiania has survived all kinds of negative & destructive issues -sounds like its gone through the ringer & fair play to the community for surviving & your video proves how its re established itself ✨
Lovely to see all the residential areas looking so good, happy & vibrant!
🕊️✌🏻🕊️
Excellent vlog. 2 questions. How did the community evict the drug pushers without more getting shot and do some of the community go to paid employment or are all self employed? Thank you so much again for sharing. ❤
Hi Deb, thanks for the kind words! So the community with the support of the police literally demolished the street that it was happening on and I'm assuming removed trouble makers from the area. In regards to employment I know there are a number of businesses and workshops operating out of the area. It was a real surprise my time in Freetown.
Reminds me of the eco-village in Findhorn, Scotland.
A really unique place for sure! Thanks for watching 👍
What a brilliant place, so beautiful.
It really is! Definitely go back oneday 🙏

Awesome thanks for the kind words and for supporting the channel! 🙏 Hope you enjoy the upcoming adventures
Thanks for another great video, Joe! I wonder how they get their water, power, sewer, etc.??
It was once a fully functional army barracks that was laying abandoned so a group of anarchists began squatting the area. So all the utilities needed were already there however the community takes great pride on improving the area.
Really good video. I'm going to Copenhagen next month.
Head over to Christiania when your there mate, very different now they've reclaimed pusher street. Thanks for watching 🙏👍
, excellent vid Mister Fish 👆🏻
Glad you enjoyed it thanks for the comment 🙏👍
excellent insight - thanks I had seen alot of this before with commercial tv....the only difference showing the market inside the warehouse.
OH the reason they got rid of the pusher street is that the government, would have had to seize control as they asked for help to end it from the government which started to raid the area (stalls) every second day as it was bring in the wrong crowd to the area pushing away the tourists which bring in the hard cash.
Thanks for the kind words and for watching 👍 the Market is at the end of the video. Check it out, it's got everything you could need!
outstanding content! gives us hope that there is a different path for all to thrive
Mate I was completely shocked in a good way. The total opposite of what I was told to expect. Thanks for watching 👍
It is a dump, that has some spots that are with some art and are a bit cleaned up - but it still attracts lunatics and drug addicts and alcoholics. If you like that scene, go for it. If you think it is the 'different path' to save humanity, it is not, it is a cul de sac of nothing that the authorities tolerate but raid frequently.
@@ramadamming8498One man's dump is another man heaven. If it's not for you then jog on. Sounds like the free way of life threatens you probably because you have a boring job and they don't.

@@JoefishJ np Joe! Love your stuff. I do the same in Canada. Great stories
On 27 August 2023, Christiania decided at a joint meeting - for the first time ever - that Pusher Street in Christiania must close, and in January 2024, Christiania decided to continue working on a proposal for a change plan for Pusher Street.
I know, it was good to hear the locals perspective. I show the closed street and cover the closure heavily within the video 👍
@@JoefishJ Sadly it was starting to gernerate to much violence, and a couple of deaths :(
Great video m8, just earned a subscriber :)
Great place. Need to revisit here soon
Yeh it's changed alot now pusher street has closed. Definitely going to go back myself nearer winter 👍
The town serves a valuable purpose. If those types of people congregate there they stay out of the city I live in.
It sounds like even pusher street was luxurious compared to Birmingham.

I went to Copenhagen a couple of times in the late 90's and I loved it however i never visited the hippie village.

Great video but do us a favour slow down your camera movements it’s hurting my head 😮
Love that place lovely restaurants lovely friendly people good weed and hash 10/10
Very surprising place, the locals I met were very friendly. Thanks for watching 👍
I've been there twice it was better years ago first time i went in the 90s. i was surprised to hear that guy mention Liverpool and i know what he means it has a lot in common with the city you will find areas like that in Liverpool the most militant socialist city in the UK you should come for a visit Joe
Yes definitely agree! I'll be heading up soon Gary 100% give me an email mate it's on my channel page I think.
You are onto something here. Capitalism working for all involved. If this was applied to Camborne does anyone think it could truly work? Do they pay taxes on property and earnings?
It's worked for Christiania for over 50 years... Who knows if it's transferable? But I can tell you now the community in Christiania is unbelievable, the way the support and help each other was remarkable.
Illegal recreational stuff is only illegal in UK because the government aren’t receiving their share……. Thus it’s illegal 👍🇬🇧. Can’t even use e bikes as a form of transport because it’s not taxed
Agreed
Looks safer than some parts of Notts.
No doubt!!
I've been there loads of time from the mid 90's never saw any violence ever. If you look for trouble you will find trouble. oh and i live in Malmö and gun crime is not a daily weekly monthly happening . I've no idea where this fantasy has been cooked up...The USA maybe. i feel very safe here.
"No photos allowed!"
Uh huh... "anarchy", huh?
As far as I know hemp doesn’t get you high ? If anyone can confirm that. Hemp is more used for its qualities to make things.

wonder what the rest of denmark thinks of this place?
Likewise has a wild reputation that's for sure!
Those who have visited like it, those who haven't don't.... :)
I imagine it’s a good thing. It keeps them out of the rest of Denmark if they all concentrate on 1 contained area.
@@stevemcgowen
Who are you? 🙂
They did not have a ”heavy drugs problem” you are mixing it up a bit
The locals I spoke with would certainly disagree... The murders in Christiania weren't over the green stuff that's for sure!
To create a tribe, you need to balance out power and wisdom; alpha-omega paradigm, or the shaman-chief paradigm. All religions have a core of tribalism. As the synchronistic groups evolved, so do the tribes surrounding them and cultures began to emerge, with trade over the silk roads and finally the idols of culture, the first rockstars. Then Kingdom and religions sprang forth. Then international relations and philosophies. We're just setting sail to the solar system; I believe the spiritual component to involve quantum mechanics and the idea of retrocausality; don't look at a photon, and then it's a wave since it's inception, leaving the future to collapse the present. Heal your past, literally and look up. Channel yourself in the quantum erased state, because when you're not looking at the universe, it's only you and that's meditation, it's free will. Do it long enough and you become your own god, and gods get tribes.
Then it's love (because you need free will for love), family, community, perfection and then the divine. 2bn African's. 2bn south Asian's. 2bn far easterners. 2bn westerners. It's like migratory-neurological 'gold panning'. Fight remained at home, and here we, inheriting the Earth. Afro-western map of religion is Kabbalah/God and south Asia-the far east is The Dao. Literal black and white; diversity only lasts until we homogenize. We'll max it out, but then in a few thousands we'll have cybernetic racial types, all the way until we're more machine than human. 4 races, for example with Buddhism, 4 gods and 10 ages. 16x10=160, Dunbar's number. Go on, let the gods have a tribe. Synchronicity is a psychedelic dance unto your own eye.
Yee.
Did you know that Lukas Graham comes from Christiania

Street “art”…I wouldn’t call that art.
There are some beautiful graffiti art pieces which Joe missed filming... I agree the tags aren't art, but just defacing.
There was some beautiful pieces to be fair, it's a very vast area so I expect I missed some good bits of art unfortunately. Thanks for watching 👍

‘powerful stuff’ 🤦♂️
Great vid, but I find an anarchist community with a list of common laws somewhat hypocritical.
Maybe you should concentrate on community rather than whatever notions of anarchy you have.
I think they were necessary to keep it going as long as they did. The pressure from outside seems to have won now with all the cops around. Perhaps when they're not it would still have a lively atmosphere but in this video it's a bit dead and they have all conformed so calling them anarchists is a bit farfetched.
Yes I agree however if you look at the list it's pretty self explanatory especially after the recent issues in the area. Thanks for watching
It's certainly changed after the closure, hopefully life and the atmosphere returns in time without the gang related issues.
An amazing community. Shows what people can achieve
