  • Gil's Arena BATTLES Over The Importance Of NBA 6th Men as Gilbert Arenas, Nick Young & The Gil's Arena Crew discuss the best NBA 6th Men of all time like Manu Ginobili & Jamal Crawford and argue if their greatness should be measured above NBA starters & if the intangibles that make them great off the bench also make them great NBA players.
Gil’s Arena premieres every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at 11:30am PT / 2:30pm ET.

Jamal Crawford is my favorite when it comes to handles but he wasn't better than 90% of the league. None of the guys you named could consistently put up those numbers against starters which is why they were great for the bench but not always as a starter. Yes they could put up those numbers at a given time but not every game against starters like the guys that started ahead of them.

Manu Ginobili is 251-98 as starter, and carried Argentina to a gold medal... The only reason he was one the bench was cos Pop wanted more energy and a leader off the bench that was good enough to close for the first unit and lead the second unit.

Yeah Ginobili is one of the few 6th men who really had no business being one and proved that by making multiple all star teams as a starter. He knew that too which is why at the beginning he wasn’t happy coming off the bench(his words) felt like he was better than that. Majority of 6th men especially like Jamal Crawford/Lou Williams are better served coming off the bench

Kevin McHale, Manu Ginobli and John Havlicek had NBA starter ability but were asked to come off the bench by their coaches for the best of their teams. All three of them are in the Hall of Fame. ALL were winners.
    Manu W-L record(762-295)
Gilbert's Win-loss record as a Wizard was 163-194(253-299 overall). He was essentially the best player on a mediocre to below average team. I notice how an ex-player's point of view is generally influenced by what kind of NBA career they had or wish they had. Gil cares more scoring, individual accolades and money than winning games. Kenyon Martin is the only one on the player in the cast who cared about winning games and competing.
Brandon Jennings best years as a basketball player were in high school and flashes in his NBA career like when he scored 55 points in an NBA game. He played for terrible teams in the Bucks and the Pistons. McCants flamed out as an NBA player and had his best moments as a college player winning a NCAA title.

For instance, I wouldn't put James Harden with Westbrook since they are both playmakers, which is why it made sense for Harden to come off the bench. Manu led the second unit and closed out the 4th quarter with the Spurs. These players would be starters on other teams.

Manu Ginobili literally was an All-Star in 2005 for the Spurs and RAISED his level of play in the playoffs like 15-20% better than his regular season in a CHAMPIONSHIP RUN. Easily the teams second best player and was a FOCAL point as a playmaker in many of his best games WHEN IT MATTERED most. Sometimes a second option can be so efficient and productive that he becomes a SECRET ALL-STAR in PLAIN SIGHT. Ginobili made a third team all-NBA COMING OFF the bench in 2008 in big spurts. He wasn't a REAL bench player -- he was their second BEST player from 2005 to 2011. Sure Parker had more consistent regular seasons here and there, but his playoff production ALWAYS DROPPED, while Ginobili's often went UP. Who cares if hes not double teamed all game when he is literally scoring 21ppg on insane Shooting Percentages. in his GREAT 2005 Playoff run where he arguably was their OFFENSIVE MVP. Why did no other players raise their games to the degree of Manu in their championship runs and even in their losses? except maybe Horry in 2005 and 2007)? Manu was actually a higher volume play maker then TIm Duncan in 2005 and through Manu's prime....and was the reason the offense never went stale from 2005 to 2011. Manu was also their second best player in 2007 NBA Playoffs. Parker had a better regular season, but Manu was always sharper in the playoffs and was always more well rounded. Ginobili usually played his best against the teams where they were closely matched -- Parker was more of a first round tiger.
Manu in 2014 title run was more of a sixth man -- but even in that playoff he was their 2nd or 3rd best offensive player. So he did have a lot of responsibility from 2005 to 2014.
Manu may have been slightly below Vince and Ray from 2005 to 2007 -- but he was damn closed to them if you see him through the "second star" lens. Go look at Pierce and Ray Allens numbers when they had to play with Kevin Garnett (a similiar setup to the Spurs with Tim Duncan as their best player. Manu's numbers look great when comparing them to 2008 Ray Allen and Paul Pierce.

Even when they know they just said something stupid...they will stick with their point and fight to the death to try to prove it...knowing that it's wrong...but needing to defend themself and 'win' an argument...at least in their mind. These guys think if you say it louder...it makes it more true. "Oh...he said it louder...I guess it must be true then'. Also love how composed Nick is during these arguments. What is Gil going on about? A 6th man on one team could easily be a starter somewhere else. Lou Will in Clippers. Westbrook can easily start over a whole lot of point guards still in the league. Manu was the same. Patty Mills moved to starting after the Spurs rebuild. Jamal could easily start for a lot of teams. 30 off the bench is a starter even if he doesn't start foe his team. Gil needs to think longer before making his takes and stop being wrong and strong.

First of all, individual stats are a part of the equation for consideration to be an all star, but it’s completely based on voting between fans, players, and coaches. Keep in my mind the all star game is an exhibition game meant solely to entertain the fans and help grow the game and business of basketball. The idea that we should only put in the top 24 scorers is patently absurd. A guy shooting below 40% on a bottom feeder team is not automatically an all star just because he’s averaging 25+ ppg…niggaz wanna dock a player for doing what’s best for the team in order to WIN CHAMPIONSHIPS which Ginobili won what 3-4 times, you can’t have it both ways. Manu could have easily averaged 25 on a bad team because he was nice as fuck and had an unguardable signature move, the Euro step, which every scorer has in their bag now.

02:40 Talking about Trae as if he is one of the best is why the NBA is where it is now. Trae can't defend his own man which is 50% of the game while he is a high turnovers machine but we talk about people don't like him as the main reason he's considered overrated. Teammates don't want to always cover other players defensive assignments when there's not even a rotation
