  • The Toyota Tacoma SR5 Trail Edition makes no sense... unless you're an active poser like me. In that case, it makes perfect sense. Compared to rivals from GMC and Chevy, the Tacoma Trail offers some choice options along with much of the Tacoma TRD Pro's legendary looks. This is a pretty appealing combo, and I think a lot of you will find it to be in a great sweet spot. Let me know what you think in the comments!

    I ordered a TRD off-road and because of the low inventory I got a 2022 Trail Edition instead. What sold me on the trim was the rear diff lock. Has a stronger and bigger rear end. And from my experience with off-road and vehicles through the years I am really happy I ended up with the Trail Edition. It has all the features I need and none of the stuff I don’t. I got it regeared and front diff lock. Crawl Control never gets used in real wheeling anyways sure it can help but I always relied on fully locked diffs. Having an actual key rather than push button start makes it more reliable and also having a remote start that doesn’t shut off when you open the door. None of the blind spot sensors and 360 cam that’s just useless in the trail. Also makes parts expensive if destroyed in the trail. Less features have more options for aftermarket parts. If you’re the type of person that wants a simple vehicle like 20 years ago, its the perfect trim.

    My first new vehicle purchase was a 1984 Toyota Longbed Deluxe, 22RE and 5MT, a great runner between Montana and the Alaska Marine Highway terminal in British Columbia at both ends of my two months off from SE Alaska during the winter. Plenty of torque for pulling the boat uphill and up launch ramps.
    I've been adding some things to the 2009 Access Cab LB SR5, 2.7 litre I4 with 5-speed manual and, while riding with Dad on our last fishing trip together, he tried out the dash switching 4wd, and was pleasantly surprised. He spec'd this last truck he was ever going to buy the way I would have, and asked me if I'd be interested in buying it. "When you're ready to sell it, I'll be ready to replace my red truck (a 2007 Malibu that's done well as a daily driver and 3-week vacation trips from southcentral Alaska to the lower 48). I checked Toyota's website and it is definitely getting more difficult to find a manual transmission offering. We like those in the western mountains for the engine braking. "Ever drive Whitebird Hill?" (Idaho) Start for zero at the top, and idling all the way down, you'd be running well over the speed limit and comfort level. 'Course that was in the late '70s and '80s, and since then 95 was realigned so it's only a two hour drive between I-90 and US12, less than half the time of our voyages across Idaho... The length of the long bed hasn't changed... just the size of Toyota's trucks. All-Pro Off Road (bed stiffeners, aluminum front IFS skid plate, HDPE tailgate insert) and LC Engineering parts (exhaust header) have been the largest additions... and a takeoff set of 3rd Gen Off Road wheels, AJT Design climate control knobs and fob cases... and the cheap AC drain extension mod... 🤠

    Great video. I just bought a Trail Edition because the dealer didnt have an Off Road. What drew me to it was the magnetic grey I like but also the bronze wheels and heritage grill. When I saw it had a rear locking differential I was sold. I really like it so far. The only thing I wish it had was a sunroof but the Trail does not have that option. It is what it is.. A special edition model.
    Still the Trail looks allot better than an Off Road in my opinion.

    Tacoma’s 3.5L V6 engine and transmission are bulletproof on the 3rd gen. Toyota engineers programmed the ECU to meet stricter emissions standards. This unfortunately gives it the impression that its unreliable or faulty with the gear hunting. I’m thoroughly enjoying my 2020 DCLB TRD Sport 4X4. Not one issue after 2 years of ownership. Thanks for the review on the trail. Love the looks but with a family I had to have the 6’ bed. The more cooler Tacomas are short bed’s IMHO.

    I bought a 2022 Tacoma SR5 almost a year ago, and I have thoroughly enjoyed owning it so far! I opted for the SR5 because my dealer had an allocation for one in black (my kid insisted I needed a black truck), and I don’t care for the bells and whistles and off road options. As long as it has 4x4 for the snowy winters here it good. I dislike the transmission very much, that gear hunting at highway speeds, especially on the slightest incline is a tad annoying, however I can live with it. It’s been fun with the aftermarket support to customize it to be MINE and not to see another one just like mine anywhere. Kudos to Toyota and I hope they don’t spoil this truck with the 4th gen

      Get it tuned! Tuning it kills the constant gear hunting, and gave me 2 mpg meaning it makes the engine more efficient. It DOES NOT void the warranty either, people that say that don't know what they are talking about just repeating something they heard. I have had warranty work done since having it tuned, they didn't even mention it.

The frontier’s v6 actually has some torque and wants to go compared to the Tacoma’s while that may be gearing it’s definitely welcomed. Something to keep in mind with the next gen mid-sized pickup trucks is that they're all going I4 Turbos. All of GMs 2023s are exclusively I4 turbos and the rumor is that the next-gen Tacoma is going to closely follow. The V6s will be reserved exclusively for the low end of their full-sized lineup. Truck sales are dropping as people gravitate towards higher fuel economy and manufacturers are following that trend.

    • @jax1079
      @jax1079  Před rokem +2

      This is true, but it was inevitable. Another thing to consider is the vast (VAST) amount of trucks sold that don't perform any kinds of strenuous truck duties. In a way, it's just manufacturers responding to market demands. I do think some of the downsizing talk always gets a bit overblown. People lost their minds when Ford went to the Powerboost V6, but that decision (and GM offering the Ecoboost turbo 4) did almost nothing to slow truck sales. The majority of people who buy pickups want a truck far more than they actually NEED a truck. Thanks for watching!

    • @Talishar
      @Talishar Před rokem +2

      @@jax1079 Sure. Until the day it actually HAS to perform strenuous truck duties which would have been within its capabilities before and on paper should still be able to but isn't for long periods of time. You're going to have little asterisk symbol next to its maximum tow value saying to not tow this weight beyond an hour or risk overheating for example. There have actually been a lot of issues with those turbo 4s on Camaros and the like in that they're a lot less robust and more prone to failure when pushed for long periods at full load. The current Tacoma V6 can run at full tilt for its full lifetime. An I4 turbo at full tilt which puts it at full boost is going to be much more suspect in how long it'll last.
      Thanks again for the video, I look forward to see if you get a 2023 Colorado and a 2024 Tacoma (if they do the refresh to the smaller turbos) to see how they work out.

    Just traded a 2020 Ranger STX Supercab for a 2023 Tacoma Trail Edition. I needed a truck with a double cab and really didn't like the service department at the Ford dealer. With Tacoma's on allocation, I lucked out getting my truck. It was cancelled by another buyer because it was a couple weeks overdue, showed up unexpectedly at the dealer and my salesman texted me to see if I was still looking for a Tacoma. The Toyota configurator is misleading because you can't order a truck to your specs at a dealer. I think the Trail Edition is aimed for the SR5 buyer who plans on doing some mods, not necessarily the hardcore off-roader and doesn't care about the upgrades offered on the TRD Off Road or Pro. One thing you didn't mention was the black interior with the gray headline that is another unique feature. The biggest advantage of the Tacoma over any other mid size truck is reliability and resale.

      Power numbers aren't everything. The new GMC Canyon and it's Chevy clone, the Colorado are going to be 2.7L Turbos. You're going to have a very stressed-out turbo I4 trying to do truck duty and I have a feeling that we're going to see a higher incidence of engine failures/issues. These newer engines are being pushed much more with the forced induction which means lower lifespans and a lot more wear and maintenance. They're going with the I4 turbos to chase fuel economy, not necessarily performance.

The current generation Tacoma didn't get past its newborn growing pain issues until 2019 so a 2024 probably won't be good until 2027. And 4 cylinder turbo........... Ughhhh...
