  • Video Shiur: A Rabbi's Different Approach To Homosexuality | Rav Dror
    Thursday June 9th 2016
    Rav Dror addresses a moral question that is very relevant to our times.
    -A Student Asks
    Regarding the recent gay pride parade in Tel- Aviv, Israel. It seems that we are going down the same path as the generation of the flood.
    There were 200,000 people marching in unity to show support for people openly involved in homosexuality, what the torah (bible) calls a sin.
    Not just any sin but one that God calls an abomination.
    How are we supposed to react to these disturbing events, and how do we act towards the people involved in them?
    Rav Dror answers with a message of love and understanding, while still maintaining our commitment to what we know is Hashem's (God's) will.

    I am a gentile, a believer in Hashem the one true creator, I try to live by the Noahide Laws everyday. My local Rabbi has been teaching me about Hashem. I am also an LGBT person.
    Like you said, these are feelings we have all of our lives. But the Rabbi teaches me of the age when gentiles of all nations will come to the Jewish Kingdom lead by the decendant of King David, that we will ask the Jewish people to teach us about Hashem. That the Jewish people will lead in spiritually uniting all of humanity.
    The Jewish people and the fundemental laws of Hashem iwll be followed by all of humanity. Not through murder, not through alienation, and not by conversion. But we will come to you with the questions about Hashem. I have already been a gentile seeking to know G-d from the Jewish people.
    Hashem bless you.

    The fact is that we cannot implement the Torah-based punishments because we don't have the Messiah and Sanhedrin of 120 rabbis & prophets in the Holy Temple. So we cannot punish for homosexuality & desecration of Shabbat, etc. But that does not mean that we have to excuse, overlook or condone the said terrible sins because they are described as severe misconduct in the Divine Torah which prescribes the death panelty which is the worst kind of punishment to indicate the seriousness of the said crimes in the eyes of G-d, the Creator of all universes and everything in them. We cannot match the intelligence of such an Awesome G-d. We do NOT have any legal & moral authority to discount the severity of those crimes in any way !

    • @ArielaShines
      @ArielaShines Před 7 lety +9

      It is 71 judges and Ha Nasi, is 72. Moshiach would not be on Sanhedrin, We do not require a Temple to have a Sanhedrin, Nobody is excusing, condoning or overlooking. If you once broke a law of Shabbat, you have no room to speak. If you made Teshuvah for that, then, you must also understand the concept of Klipot. Different people have different challenges. It may not be your challenge. Perhaps that person has something that requires their soul to rectify something. Unless you are ready to judge the soul of another, silence and reflection are a better course. Acting with compassion, trying to heal the pains of people, trying to mend fragmented souls. that is more important than condemning people.

    Rav dor
    Thank you for your compassion and your understanding towards the human experience of all individuals regardless of their homosexual or transgender orientation/identification.
    In reading the Torah it’s important to realize several scriptural realities. If Jewish tradition outlines a blanket condemnation of homosexuality regarding both sexes, then, a logical question would be why doesn’t the Torah (specifically Leviticus)? Well, the bible provides the answer in several places. One, oddly enough, is found in Leviticus chapter 18 in verse 3 and verse 30, where the reference point for the listed condemnations is clearly established. Sandwiched between these two verses are the practices that God outlines that are to be avoided. And I would add, still to be avoided today. And as verse 3 and verse 30 make clear, the chronological reference point being referred to is during the Canaanite’s civilization around the historic time period of 1450 B.C.E and prior. So a question worth asking is, what was going on during this time within the land of Canaan, and how does it align with the condemnations that correspond to it? The answer to this question helps to solidify just how accurate the bible actually is with its references to it.
    The bible makes clear throughout the Hebrew Scriptures, that the Canaanite religion, among other things, involved temple prostitution and child sacrifices to Molech. And the nature of their ritualistic practices involved “temple keepers” known as Chemarims and lower priests who would dress as women and prostitute themselves in honor of their fertility goddess Astarte, Molech’s mate. So when chapter 18 of the Priestly Levitical Law Code warns against the religious practices of the Canaanites and the actions its male priests engaged in, it was spot on. And as evidenced by the book of Deuteronomy, the manner of application of these condemnations, such as the laws against male and female temple prostitution and cross-dressing to the entire assembly of Israel confirms the idolatrous theme Leviticus was encompassing all along.
    There are also some interesting things within Leviticus 18 that I would like to take the opportunity to point out. The first is the use of the phrase “It is a violation of what is natural”- (that’s how my translation puts it). Where would you suppose this phrase would be applied here in Leviticus 18? The presumed “homosexuality” reference? Actually, it’s applied in verse 23, where interestingly enough, both men and women are condemned from bestiality. And unlike the supposed “homosexual” reference, the priestly Levitical Law Code isn’t the only place within the Torah where bestiality is condemned -- universally and in regards to both sexes at that. The “violation against what is natural” phrase is also used at Leviticus chapter 20. But it’s not in verse 13. It’s actually in verse 12, where daughter-in-law fornication is being condemned. And once again, this prohibition too gets repeated in other books of the Torah as well.
    Deuteronomy, is also known as “The Second Law” or more appropriately “An Explanation of the Law”. In fact, all of the condemnations in Leviticus that have the death penalty evoked get repeated in Deuteronomy. All except for one: the supposed condemnation of “homosexuality”. Bestiality, for example, is mentioned again and once again it’s in application to both sexes. But why not homosexuality; especially with Leviticus being a portion of the Law and Deuteronomy being know as a “repetition” of it? Because the Canaanite rituals its male priests engaged in, which the bible was clearly referencing, is what’s being condemned, not homosexuality. While the “Law of the Priests”, which the Jews later referred to Leviticus as, stipulated the need to avoid the practices of the Canaanites, the “Explanation of the Law” (better known as the book of Deuteronomy) in 24:17,18, expanded this in regards to all of Israel and forbids either sex, within all of Israel from becoming temple prostitutes. And the fact that some bibles insert the MAN-MADE, lying term “sodomite” shows the effort made by homophobic, blasphemous translators manufacturing a homosexual connection when scripture absolutely provides none
    Thank you for emphasizing the Torah theme of love and compassion, and perhaps my post may help you to be a full supporter of lgbt rights and show how the torah has been misused to deny them their rights.

    Question: so, did he do it yet? The 6 hour hitbodedut, on this topic? Did he? Did you? Whas there any help, any explanation from Heaven? Seriously! I know people who say "G-d made me gay. How can He ask me not to be?" For some, this self-contradiction ends up the key argument against the Torah (or, in the case of the individual who told me that, against all organized religion, including Christianity, in his case). Others, I know, suffer. Corageously and quietly (because they usually have to be silent about it).

    BH! Best response I have ever herd from a Rabbi on the matter! It is true that righteousness can break spirituality immature person. It's like giving meat to a baby when the baby can only take milk. The Rav never said homosexuality is acceptable, which is really all anyone can do-make the declaration that it is against Torah. But more than that, what really can we do? Kill homosexuals? Make them feel less than human? We don't understand many things, and sometimes Hashem just wants us to know that a certain behavior is not within "HIS Will' but we in a fallen state are not worthy of judgment.

    • @ttlucey
      @ttlucey Před 3 lety

      I believe killing for certain violations is metaphorical and meant to mean we're to consider them dead and to not make their decision of living that life any easier on them, as it's enabling the path of least resistance away from God.
      Killing is not judging, it's condemning based on our judgement. Nothing we have to live with on earth, created itself, God did and to kill it shows God we believe our ways can not share his creation with all.
      But just as "doing nothing is sometimes best", helping others lead a life we choose to not lead is no different than walking that path ourselves.

    A very interesting and insightful shiur. However, the whole idea of a Torah life is self control. If I have an urge to be a bank robber, shall I just give in to my urge or control myself? Children are unable to control themselves, but once you become an adult, it's expected of you to act accordingly. Plus, why do they need to announce that they have this proclivity? I don't parade around announcing that I keep Shabbos, kashrus, tznius. I just do it. Nor do I announce that I was able to overcome any one of the myriad temptations that I encounter regularly. There are plenty of "straight" frum men who are having difficulty finding a wife. Would it be OK for them to visit a brothel in the meantime? There is a little misplaced rachmonus here.

    • @charliesmith2821
      @charliesmith2821 Před 6 lety

      Mandy Adler Don't judge someone until you have walked a mile in their shoes. Homosexuality is more than just an urge. It is also a absence of desire or a repulsion of being with the opposite sex. Having a life partner to many people is a very important part of life that brings love, security, stability, happiness etc. If I was told I couldn't get married and had to spend my life alone or with someone that repulsed me. I don't know how well my life would turn out. I would probably end up severly depressed and it would prevent me from being the best jew and person I could be. You take for granted your ability to love and connect with the opposite sex. Something that is fundamental to living a normal life. Just imagine for a minute if the roles were reversed and somone told you, you could never be with the opposite sex. EVER. And you had to marry and be intimate with the same sex or just be alone for the rest of your life. Wouldn't be so easy would it? You need to accept that sometimes you don't understand something. And that's okay. But only hashem should be the judge.

    There's a documentary series called "9 Months That Made You" with an episode entitled "One of a Kind," which you can watch on tpt(dot)org, that speaks on this matter from a biological POV. One's sexuality has to do with what hormones and what amount of said hormones are released during the child's time in the womb and then later during puberty. Genetics as well as the mother's diet, general health and stress levels during her pregnancy can impact and even impede the proper and timely release of estrogen or testosterone during the formation of the child. In male homosexuals this can lead to them having a smaller third interstitial nucleus in the anterior hypothalamus (INAH-3) in the brain, which, apparently, directly effects their sexual behavior. I like Rav Dror's approach to this issue. If one can listen to Judaism and science, then, perhaps, the lesson here is for men to treat their wife like a queen, especially during her pregnancy. See to her needs and to her wants. Insure she's given healthy kosher food; kosher prenatal vitamins and folic acid; lessen her stress by maintaining shalom bayit (peace in the home) and, again, generally treat her like a Queen, because she is a literal Offspring of HaMelech HaOlam (see Niddah 31a).

      Although, we are all sexually neutral, each personal environment drives each individual to a specific sexual orientation. Even when we may be born with a certain tendency towards a certain orientation, we are biologically made neutral, of course, this is about sexuality, not procreation necessarily. As +smadeintheshade pointed out, "any port in a storm", it is environmental pressure that drives an individual to a different orientation, it can be temporary, but it is completely natural.

      That is useful for a healthy baby but you cannot control that way if someone is gay or not. We must support and love all our people. And for these people it is terrifying it's terrifying to live a life where you are scared that you will lose your friends and family because they can't accept you the way you are. That feeling of being alone and unloved is the worst feeling in the world.

      Orthodox Fox you may smother a boy with the mother's affection, and it may result in a feminine-like boy, but that would never affect the boy's sexual orientation in any way. Your sexual orientation comes from the womb and that's it. You cannot modify it

    In my humble opinion, do we need to "understand" why a murderer murders and a thief steals in order to "reach" them? We are already told WHY sin happens. Evil exists and so does free-will. We are also told how we can overcome sin: only with the help of Hashem, studying Torah, and actively increasing yirat shomayim. Some sins are so powerful that only being shaken out of them with fear will work (and the fear of punishments is not the only kind of fear, although very good and important. Fear as AWE-- of Hashem, of His world, of letting Him down, etc. is a powerful kind of fear). Psalm 111: the fear of G-d is the beginning of all wisdom. This doesn't mean that we are cruel to these people who struggle with this... the opposite, we are being kind to them to really give them a shot at helping them come close to Hashem. We can be sensitive, kind, and helpful people while telling those with this challenge that their only way forward is yirat shomayim. IMHO, there is not a big overwhelming question about this issue. Stay simple, stay with the Torah. The evil inclination is "sophisticated" and loves to tell people: "It's so complex, you don't understand, we have no idea how to fight this or what to do!" YES, WE DO: stay simple and with the Torah! Turn your back on sophistication and be simple with Hashem. In spiritual matters, we have a GUARANTEE: if we sincerely want to come close to Hashem, He will help us and allow us to be successful! All blessings to everyone struggling with whatever everyone struggles with! Remember, Hashem WANTS us to succeed!!! Talk to Hashem and start to develop a real connection with Him! He will help!

      Murder is taking a life. Homosexuality is giving love. Sin or not, there's a difference in consequence : the first is negative, the second positive.
      You're free to live your life as you wish as long as it doesn't violate non-religious law, and I respect that. I only wish for the same right, although respect would be appreciated too.

      Hi Tony, the first step to doing Teshuvah is stop the act. If you still act on homosexual desires, then that is where you need to start. However, while it is very difficult and a long journey, it is still possible to do teshuvah.

    One reason there’s no capital punishment is because there’s no high court as there was in Biblical times.
    Secondly, sometimes the Bible uses strong descriptive language that isn’t meant to be taken literally, but rather we’re meant to dig deeper . For example, the law of “an eye for an eye”. This law is not taken literally. Rather, the person must pay monetary compensation. Why then doesn’t the Bible just say that? Because that would make light of the severity of the crime. So the Bible says “an eye for an eye” to make a point of how severe this crime is, to the point of an “eye for an eye”.
    I am just thinking this on my own, but I feel that it is similar here. Perhaps the killing isn’t meant for the person themselves but for whatever troubles are plaguing them. Maybe the Bible is telling us to kill and help to heal whatever is hurting these people.

    Without Tshuva \ Repentance, the demons play hell with our base mechanisms. They can make you have feelings for your dog, or a goat! HaShem knows the people He intended us to be from the beginning, and this can only be accomplished by allowing His Spirit to work within us by Tshuva--He accomplishes in us what we are incapable of doing on our own! All sin separates us from HaShem, and all of us need to Repent to receive His Salvation!
    Shabot Shalom.

    JHWH never changes, it is us who change. People will hate the word of JHWH and his followers, because of the truth, and will decide to follow their desires then what JHWH has already set on the Tanakh. This is why the Nev'im where persecuted, because they warned the people according to the word of JHWH, and the people would not listen. Same was with Noah, many cried in the end, not when warning was at place.

    Interesting perspective. Shiism in Iran takes it a step further, the government sponsors transgender operations in gender change cases as they are
    Mentioned in the video and after a psychological evaluation approves. I think those who cannot go through the process are required to completely live as the gender they feel. It is however penalized to act and feel male and do homesexual acts with another male when in public. The same with a female when witnessed in public.

Imagine how hard it would be for Rabbis to give up Torah. It is the same for the homosexual. The Rabbi who gives up Torah is the one that will reach homosexuals.
