EURO 5 emission standard is TOUGH for new motorcycles

  • Tough Euro 5 limits will apply to new motorcycles and mopeds. Designed to ensure this category of vehicles will pollute less, the regulation sets stringent limits for a number of tailpipe emissions. So… what does that mean for you, even if you are not living in Europe?

Not really. The 1200 GS puts out 95.8 CO2 g/km. (CO2 - Carbon dioxide emission) which is HIGHER than a Ford Fiesta (82g/km)

I’m just glad I live in Australia, SWM Australia just brought a shipment or SWM RS 650 as they were Euro 3 ( they got them for a steel) as we can still sell them in Aus. And SWM are not selling the RS 650 anymore as the Superdual was selling way better and they didn’t bother getting it to meet Euro 4 at the time. Anyway a lot of happy customers got a RS at a bargain price. I noticed the new Moto Guzzi V 85 is Euro 5 as well .

I wonder if Honda will bring back the EXP-2 of 1995 Dakar notoriety to keep two-stroke engines alive with EURO-5? If they do, it will have been a long time coming, but I, for one, hope that it can meet the standards... I also wish that the MMIC would standardize the OBD for motorcycles with the OBD2 that is already in other cars and light trucks... (since 1996) - this would mean one standard port, which has already been in use for 25 years... E-5 will not mean the death of the bike as we know it, the majority of Japanese cruisers have been liquid-cooled for quite some years now. Big Singles are the tough one, but many manufacturers have already seen the ghost on the horizon and are moving to twins of the same displacement... ie: KLR650 replacement is the Versys650 with the parallel twin (not an exact replacement, but reflecting the actual use of newer models of the KLR - less dirt and more street/highway. The dropping of the Hayabusa by Suzuki really isn't a surprise, many of us long-time riders have been expecting a new version for a few years now, and it will certainly be compliant.. What I would love to have is a 2002 ZZR-250 with EFI and a 2-into-1 (relatively) high-mount exhaust... 38hp in a 330-lb wet weight is a very nice commuter.. and the 29.5" stock seat height is a full two inches lower than what passes for a low seat height these days!

Motorcycle used to emit 10x more exhaust gas than cars, they have to wait at traffic lights just like cars and there is a lot of motorcycles in European cities.
The Euro 4 and 5 standard for motor hacks are comparable to what car manufacturer have been doing for 15 years. It’s nothing exceptional, just adding some proven pollution mitigation technologies.
And as far as old bike ending production… well yeah… They’re old.
