He said, sometimes, the bears want the same fish. Let them pick their spots, go down river and enjoy. If a bear wants your fish, let it. If a bear wants you, make sure you have a big enough caliber in your firearm. Me, being from Virginia, never thought of that. Sound advice though. Can't wait to go back!
@@davida6146 Depends on where you live, but eating the meat of a predatory animal might be a bad idea, as they can contain bacteria and the larvae of dangerous parasites. Generally safe if prepared properly. Its a shame, because I hate the idea of animals being killed and their meat going to waste.
I had a similar experience with a squirrel 🐿️ in England. They can get pretty feisty when they are hungry. And before you laugh, it wasn’t a little red squirrel either! It was a big imported American grey squirrel!
It’s not in a charging posture, it’s not behaving aggressively, it’s not trying to stalk them, bear spray is effective at around that range, and bears are extremely unlikely to attack large groups. I believe the stat is that nobody in a group of four or more has ever been killed by a wild bear in the wilderness. Even though this looks dangerous, it was a very safe encounter
the way it just calmly wanders over makes it look so cute and cuddly. like it was just trying to make a new friend. a friend who also just happens to be lunch.
Charging is more of a defensive behavior. This one stopped chasing the salmon, looked at the people, began scent profiling the wind coming from them and then made a precarious small step toward them to center his body to them so that he could chase if we wanted to. The read was correct by the guide and the verbal command was obviously a useful cue to stop the curious probing this bear was beginning to display.
@@alton31ellis while, yes, the guide was correct in being defensive, this bear 100% had no interest in anything to do with the people. You see the red salmon in the water mid video. The bear sees them too and follows them as the salmon went downstream. However, the people are too close for the bears desire. When the bear follows the salmon but gets too close to the people , it stops. The bear was guaging whether to follow the salmon while being uncomfortably close to people, or to ditch the salmon while prioritizing it's own comfort & safety. There was definitely no aggressive intent by the bear
@@PackerManForLifeThe bear was obviously interested in these folks as he came up right near then sniffed at the air, seeking a cue. Like the OP says: he was assessing the situation.
Not a chance, if that was a momma with cubs around this video would have been titled "dinner with the bear family" a momma will fight till her death to protect her babies!
If he's hungry, he would be more cautious about his approach, unless he's killed and eaten people before. He would circle them and test their defenses before committing to an attack. If he was enraged, he might ignore bear spray, but he isn't enraged/protecting a kill/a mother bear with cubs/caught by surprise.

“You guys having any luck?”
“Nah, I forgot my pole at home”
“Pole? What the hell is this guy talking about, pole?”
“What?”
“Oh, I said that out loud?”
“I’ll keep everyone safe, I promise.” Famous last words lol
Yep, just like the Oceangate woke dude, it’s always the cocky douches, full of nothing but hubris that get everyone finito! Applies to countries and civilizations as a whole.
You just need to be able to outrun him...
Cept hes got bear spray and .44 to back it up.
@@Icanlogonnowshit can still happen
I believe that was the last known words of Custer to his men.
"Adventure responsibly" sounds like an oxymoron, but I get your drift 👍🤣
“I have my bear spray ready” OK that will save you brother, good on ya.
That bear looked like he was getting up there in years. I wonder how old he was?
old enough to start looking at people as easy prey😮
When my uncle lived in Alaska, he told us about the hand cannon he took fishing with him. I asked, why the hell do you need a firearm to fish? You're not shooting the fish. He said, sometimes, the bears want the same fish. Let them pick their spots, go down river and enjoy. If a bear wants your fish, let it. If a bear wants you, make sure you have a big enough caliber in your firearm. Me, being from Virginia, never thought of that. Sound advice though. Be prepared for whatever you may encounter in your environment and enjoy what nature has to offer. After going to Alaska myself about a month ago, I see why people love it so much. Can't wait to go back!
Are you allowed to eat the bear if it attacked you and you had to shoot it?? Or must you leave it dead where it lies?
i bet the wildlife there is AMAZING!
@@davida6146 Depends on where you live, but eating the meat of a predatory animal might be a bad idea, as they can contain bacteria and the larvae of dangerous parasites. Generally safe if prepared properly. Its a shame, because I hate the idea of animals being killed and their meat going to waste.
Virginia still has bears, but Alaska's bears are far more dangerous. Bears used to be in all of North America that wasn't a dessert
Was hoping it was gonna be a wise short quote but was just a story 😞
I had a similar experience with a squirrel 🐿️ in England. They can get pretty feisty when they are hungry. And before you laugh, it wasn’t a little red squirrel either! It was a big imported American grey squirrel!
Every single time you say, "My dad's outdone himself this time." And you know what? Every time, he has! 👏🏻
If that bear decided to charge, it would get you by the time you could pull the trigger.
Bear spray on a windy day what a great combination.
Why all good Guides pay attention to the direction the wind is blowing. Why you should only hire Experienced guides in Alaska.
He says in the comments that he was also carrying a .44 magnum in a chest rig. Just in case he needed to be a bit more... persuasive.
lol I love how bears always look like they are walking with saggy pants on when you see them walking from the back
This is what people think every encounter would be like with that "lost in the wood with a bear or a man" question.
the way it just calmly wanders over makes it look so cute and cuddly. like it was just trying to make a new friend. a friend who also just happens to be lunch.
Sometimes bear spray just isn't enough
Why is that?
@@techfrank2431there have been cases where they have run through the bear spray.
@@Nutmeg142 you are absolutely right. Many people have died, holding the bear spray in their hand because it was useless against the charging grizzly.
@@envman67 citation? And what were they doing there? Trying to kill wildlife most probably. Self defense case for the bear.
@@envman67 only good bear defense tool is a 12ga with 3" slugs, or a .308\.30-06 rifle or something similar.
The bear walked away all heartbroken. "Gosh. I just wanted a hug." 😢
Nice move “Eh-ehh!” No, no, bear 🐻. Move on. Looks like 🐻 remembers you too 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
It all goes this way until one day that bear decides it won’t go that way.
Amen
i hope it goes 🐻 way 😂
Like what just happened in Banff, sadly
@@user-te7wc7lh4r what happened?
And that bear proceeds to eat the guide and every other person in that party. Slowly
I like the bear family that shows at the background.
Its crazy how big animals never want drama but the little tiny ones will pick a fight every time
Yup
Bear: Why am I bothering with these itty bitty salmon when these big ol humans over there?😂
You can always tell grizzly bear shit by the cowboy hat and sunglasses in it.
Crazy, cause most of the fatal maulings that happen where I live (Montana) are people form out of State.
🤣🤣🤣🤣
I appreciate you!!!❤❤❤
Magnificent bear, but scary as heck to be that close to it. For big critters, they can move remarkably fast!
Awwww ✋🏼L👀K🤚🏼 at it Prance❣️🥰
Lol, he looked like he was so happy to see you, like hi uncle joe!!! Good to see you!!! 😂❤ Be careful out there❣️
Crazy to be in this position for so many different reasons & not just being in danger either
He's more interested in the salmon, than screwing around with you.
This guy is literally pocketing a hand cannon that would have taken out half of Napoleons army... when he says they are safe, they're safe.
Bear was like: “Weee Hungryyyy” 😂
“Come on man! We’ve been friends for years! You still don’t trust me???”
Old timer was just checking to see if maybe you brought an extra picnic basket.
He's smarter than the average bear!
😂😂😂
Nice to remember that you are in **their** house! And to be respectful of them! 🐻 ❤
Man used a warning grunt that you use for toddlers when they're about to do something bad.🤨😂😂
Yep haha 😄
Bear said "What's up?...OK, later."
His ears were forward and in a relaxed position. He was troting not charging.
Chill'in
@@PackerManForLifeThe bear was obviously interested in these folks as he came up right near then sniffed at the air, seeking a cue.
Like the OP says: he was assessing the situation.
Thanks for the info, redditor
I am happy to see it from here, on my phone, and sitting on my couch in Scotland. Thanks
Bear:
Is that.....yup, He's got the bear spray. Dammit
I think it's a mama bear that has cubs on the other side making sure you all aren't a threat to her babies .
Nope
if that was the case, it would've charged them for sure
Not a chance, if that was a momma with cubs around this video would have been titled "dinner with the bear family" a momma will fight till her death to protect her babies!
Just remember you don’t have to outrun the bear just your buddy !!
I literally almost choked on my toast reading that 😂
It helps when you’re already standing and your buddy is laying down taking pictures.
U aint never lie 😹😹😹
Or just push your buddy over so he stumbles. That also works.
You damn skippy!!!😮😮😮
ABSOLUTELY STUNNING BEAUTY RIGHT THERE!!! 💚💚💚
Thank you! Cheers!
Aww, I love that his ears have a white fluffy frame 🥰.
Famous last words. When a hungry predator comes your way, hes trying to decide if your going to be his snack.
Spoken like someone that has never been to Alaska or seen Alaskan Bear Attack spray in use.
Hence the confrontational stance he took, the bear spray, and the 44 magnum…
THE LOOK BACK and SNIF is a micro- aggressive move. STAY READY
🤦♂️🤦♂️
Micro aggressive 😂😂😂😂
Thank you for you're wisdom bear whisperer
Smart Humans, Smart Bears = Unforgettable Beautiful encounter. Everyone safe. Everyone. 😊👍
🙂
Just watched the Twix ad on tv and bear wanted to check it out for himself 😂
If he was hungry and decided to rush you, there's nothing you could have done to keep anyone safe
There's a ton I could do lol. What a silly thing to say
@@CalebJacques lol deranged😂
Semiautomatic 12 gauge shotgun slugs is the backup plan.
@@CalebJacques You’re being silly naive about this! They’re nothing to play with. You and “your group” might be okay cause you know how to behave, but you are conditioning him to being too close to humans to decide if he wants to attack or back off. You’re not the only one going out there. Please be more responsible than this.
