    A half A press means that the run begins with the player already holding A. So on an individual-star basis, the half press is counted as 1, but in the context of a full run, the half press is counted as 0, because the A button is just being held from an earlier press.

  • @JasperPeters
    @JasperPeters Před 23 dny +3

    There are no half presses in the full run, just individual levels. Due to the fact one can start or stop the press outside of the level. So essentially to make counting the total a presses for the game you count just the pressing or the releasing as .5 press. This way you will have two levels back to back, the first with the start, the second with the release with a total A presses for each being 2.5 and 5.5, add them together and you get 8 presses, which is the correct amount you would need to finish those two levels back to back.
    In other words: No Arlo you're remembering incorrectly, it's nothing about rounding down/up.
    Also no need to worry about the burnt rice, it was probably in a parallel universe ;)

    love seeing arlo talk about this corner of sm64; as an avid fan of the entire community for years it's cool to see other people i enjoy also be interested in these topics.
    to answer your question on what's gonna happen next: there's always more improvements to be made! this was just a 70 star speedrun on wii vc; a full 120 star run currently uses 13 a presses (though a lot are not humanly viable). trying to improve existing strats to be humanly possible + trying to solve the other a presses is something that is being worked on every single day, and there's really no stopping point in sight.
    in terms of runners getting lower times: unless marbler wants to do more runs, it won't happen for a long time. marbler has been training for YEARS to get these strats to be humanly viable, as well as getting themself good enough at the tricks to perform them. i don't think another person could just "learn the route" and practice hard for a few days - it would take several months, or even years to get to this level.
    if anyone reading is interested in the history of the a button challenge, there's a FANTASTIC video/series of videos by bismuth that explains everything up until 2022 (also his other videos are goated as well). there's also tons of cool things in the other corners of the sm64 community, whether that be normal speedruns, rom hacks, content creators, etc., there's a lot of insanely cool things going on!
    anyway, thanks for reading my little ramble lol. sm64 is my favorite game of all time and i got excited seeing arlo speak about it. hope everyone has a good day :3

    @travisjones5874 Před 23 dny +3

    For anyone who is confused about how the half A press thing works, its not actually an issue about registering half an input or anything like that. Ill explain how it works but first I need to explain a couple of other things.
    First, the way I understand it is as follows. The A button has two states that it can be seen in. Pressed, or not pressed. Holding it down would obviously be one long A press until you let go.
    There are certain actions that need a new A press to do, like a jump. But some only need it held down ( I believe swimming faster is an example of this )
    Second, there are two ways you can view playing a level or a run of the game. 1 way is a full game run, where you are playing levels back to back and counting presses through that entire playthrough. The other way is focusing on a singular level or star. Obviously when trying to discover new A press saves you'd most likely be playing it the second way, but when doing the actual attempt at the game it would be the first way.
    With that in mind, lets say you have a star that requires an A press. I'm not the most versed in this but I believe an example of this is some of the stars that require swimming. ( Even if this example is wrong, the idea behind it is what's more important ) Without the A button held Mario will swim very slow, making some stars require a press and hold of the A button to swim more quickly to them. Lets say for the sake of argument that our "star" requires only that singular A press in its level, the one to swim to it. If that's the case, then doesn't that mean the star would be 1 A press and that counts towards your total? Yes... kind of. In the second scenario where you are viewing the game level by level, yes, it requires an A press. However, we can take advantage of the way the game views the A buttons states.
    Lets say you have another level, in this case our "star" also requires 1 A press to jump at some point during the level. That also requires 1 A press, so that would also be +1 to our A press count. Meaning if you played this star then went to the next level, you would have 2 A presses correct? Not in the context of a full game run. Here is what you can do. You can do the jump in level 2 that requires an A press, continue to hold the A button all the way through collecting that star, you make your way to the first level, enter the water, and so long as you never let go of the A button, you are now fast swimming without having pressed A the second time, removing an A press from the run.
    So the reason some stars get hit with the 0.5 A press is because A full game run can negate the A press, but playing the level without the context of the rest of the game in mind requires 1. So what is between 0 and 1, 0.5.
    Obviously, if a situation were ever to occur that every single other A press in the game were saved except for the A press to swim in that one spot, then it would once again require an A press in the level to swim, since you no longer have a previous A press to leech of off.
    In short, you can think of 0.5 A presses as saying "In a full game run we can use a previous A press that is required in another level to not have to used it here, but if I played this level without any others first, it would still require an A press"
    Since it would be factually wrong to say you don't need the A button at all in the level, we can't quite call it 0 A presses, but it still doesn't have to be a "new" A press, so it can't be called 1 A press either. So long as another A press exists in the game that we can leech off of to reach the star, 0.5 A presses is how its worded.
    I hope my example makes sense.

    Speed running is so important to keeping old games in people's minds imo and Speed runners themselves usually start out as people who just want a new way to play their favorite games, since there is only so much you can do with a game vanilla style.
    Plus Speed runs get us back to one of the most foundational elements in gaming, competition, it is literally a evolution of arcade score systems you see in goldenage games. Speed runs allow community to form around single player games and a reason to see someone do something fresh to a game you are familiar with.

    Luigi in Mario 64 will happen eventually, but I don't think there's a good way to do Arbitrary Code Execution in the game yet.

    • @Sauraen
      @Sauraen Před 23 dny

      It's unlikely that Arbitrary Code Execution will be found in SM64, but if it ever is, of course we will make a Luigi% TAS. One tricky part here though, we were able to stay off of Nintendo's radar with Triforce% because we didn't copy any assets from the Gigaleak and the Spaceworld overdump. But the key assets like the Triforce room and the Unicorn Fountain weren't in those anyway. However, Nintendo's real Luigi model WAS in the Gigaleak. It would be very difficult to convince anyone working on the project not to use it.

    I understand it and love weird stuff like this, I recently watched Summoning Salts hours long video on the history and evolution of Tetris high scores. Pretty technical, nerdy, and interesting…even the way people press the buttons have techniques, and the way the controller is held for “hyper tapping”, and how the max high score on the community standard Tetris on NES is 999,999 and his after that a score needs to be either figured out manually or the number of times you max out at 999,999 are counted, or many years later a game shark “cheat” was discovered that allows the score to go up higher using a letter in place of the digits. The score is in the millions and the competition is competing trying to time the way they get the points and then figure out how to play on the Tetris kill screen to get as many points as possible when the game is throwing bricks faster than you can get them to where you want. It’s very interesting, some of them were gloves. I can’t even get 800,000 but watching the video made me give it a shot. I’m no where close but it made me appreciate Tetris gen more.
    But Super Mario 64 with no A button? That is very very hard to believe even with exploits. I’ll have to track down the video.

    Speed running is insane. If you think about the amount of time and dedication they put into those games they probably know how to play an instrument by now.

    I don't know about finding the Triforce in SM64, but they did find a way to use ACE and reprogram Ocarina of Time, within the game, to create new events that lead to the Triforce...and then some. Now that video was something to watch (should still be on SDA's channel).

      Like yeah, the camera can be a bit wonky, and there certainly are stars that are very annoying, but I really do think Super Mario 64 still holds up as a really good game!

    The thing about the 0× A presses run is that it's currently only possible on the Wii VC version of the game due to some floating point rounding error that results in that platform very very slowlt rising up
    The og release still requires 1 A press

  • @Dark_Jaguar
    @Dark_Jaguar Před 23 dny

    Mario 64's controls are absolutely amazing and still holds up to this day. The camera not so much... That was innovative when it came out, but the way it gets stuck on things so easily or how often you get in situations where the camera can be rotated 7 to the left, or 7 to the right, only to give an error beep if you want to actually make a full circle... Yeah, Banjo Kazooie fixed all those issues and later platformers, the good ones, surpassed it by miles since then. That said, we now have a full reverse engineered source code for this game, and the camera can and has been fixed into something more functional. It's just a shame speed runners can't use that one.

    Super Mario 64 is an impressive, infinitely fun game that still proves time and time again how much of a masterful work it is despite its successors improving on it. It gave way to so many new design choices and directions developers could have in their games and it is absolutely impressive how it remains relatively relevant today thanks in part to romhacks, PC decompilations and recompilations and last but not least it's speedrunning scene. I mean, it's insane how much the movement and physics of this game has inspired so many people to try and beat this game as fast as possible. So many news skips, clips, jumps, feel-your-way-through moments have made a huge splash on how people play this game. I mean, people have talked about cosmic rays and how it could affect a copy of Mario 64, like what in the actual frick, man? That's insane. This game is more than a game. It's culture, tradition, history. It's incredible. Truly a game for the history books, man. The only game that can come close to this level of depth, relevancy and dedication inside and outside its world is probably Minecraft, but it's even crazier to think Mario 64 was just designed to be a really darn good game with amazing movement back in the 90s and yet people find just as much depth as a game that was designed to be everything from farming, exploration, freedom, fishing, fighting, puzzle solving, etcetera, from the early 2010s. It's just, wow, idk what to say. It's almost 30 years old and this game keeps impressing me.

    Stuff like this reminds me a couple of years back when a LARGE group of people, including the runners themselves, were CONVINCED that it was impossible to beat Super Mario Odyssey in under an hour. And while I admittedly wasn't that engrossed in the high-level speedrunning scene for the game, I had a feeling that was utter baloney. If stuff like "going back through the door in Cool Cool Mountain" is still being discovered nearly 30 years after SM64's release, it seems like a huge leap in logic to assume that NOTHING else useful in a game will be discovered or updated mere years after its launch.
    For anyone who's curious, the Any% world record for Super Mario Odyssey today sits at 56:10.

    The "playing as Luigi" one is a fun idea, but it's impossible. There's a model of Luigi in the game, but it's an incomplete model, and there's no way to access it, it's just sitting in the back files. I don't think there's any rigging for it, no animations, nothing, just an incomplete model. The MOST you could do is hack the game to switch the model of Mario with the incomplete model of Luigi, and use Mario's rigging and animations, but it wouldn't look right.
