Another neat little Easter egg: if you pay really close attention to the sounds in the opening scene, and the scene where Lewis goes back in time to see his mom, you'd realize that they actually sync up perfectly, in that Lewis was the noise that spooks his mom, as well as the one who knocked on the door in the beginning, after he'd already done everything.

This movie came out during the “dark times” for Disney in the 2000’s and so is widely overlooked, but I still remember how surprised I was at how good it is. The creativity is off the charts, and it has a great message that you don’t see often enough in kids’ movies.

Yeah, and movies like this, "Treasure Planet," and "Atlantis: The Lost Empire" are good ones that show male characters who are not all strong and buff, and socially awkward nerds with hard childhoods that boys today can relate to. @@broadwaybrook2319 not all boys are socially awkward nerds with bad childhoods. Some of them fit the “strong and buff” build and most are regular kids with regular lives, no labels needed, and movies never cater to the latter so stop complaining. Hercules and Mr Incredible are the only “strong and buff” male characters for Disney and for obvious reason. Aladdin was scrawny too, Flynn from Tangled, so was Kuzco from Emperors New Groove, Peter Pan, Woody from Toy Story was a scrawny rag doll, like WTF are you even talkin about? Most Disney leading males are scrawny. John Smith wasn’t strong and buff, neither was Phoebus or Shin from Mulan. Tarzan was more on the lean side but clearly in shape from all the physical activity he had to partake to keep up with the gorillas. Flit from Bugs Life was supposed to be a scrawny ant. Tramp was a scrawny dog. Nemo was a scrawny lil fish with a disability. Quasidmodo was disfigured. Stop it. Boys don’t need to transpose themselves onto cartoon characters anyways it’s partly why the western society is so messed up as is.

As an adoptee myself, I always loved how Mildred(the orphanage director) is kind and positive. The message to, "keep moving forward" with the power of persistence in this movie and deep love of family is so beautiful. However, this movie feels flawed to me in the sense that they create a concept that children who are successful are the only ones adopted. For example, Lewis is only noticed by his adoptive family when his inventions are successful. Also Mike wins a baseball game, which gets rid of his bitterness towards Mike and he is adopted. Thank you for reacting to this movie Nick! I Appreciate how you put all your heart into these reactions.

    • @The-X-Territory
      @The-X-Territory Před 5 měsíci +2

I don’t necessarily agree with the successful orphans thing. Goob wasn’t adopted because of how aggressively he acted around the parents, which was a result of his failed catch, but not necessarily the failure itself.
In the timeline where he does catch the ball, he doesn’t have that problem. He has no reason to be aggressive anymore, he’s more likely to make a good impression. I’m not saying his success didn’t help, but I don’t think his success is the sole reason.
Same with Lewis, he’s a science nerd who likes inventing things. The whole “accepting different people” movement was still in its early stages, and Lewis was a hyper imaginative 12 year old who instead of taking interest in Sports or Gaming, he spent his time inventing machines.
And whilst the film often shows his machines failing, the bigger problem is HOW they fail. Normally with explosions… which are pretty bad. The peanut thing was definitely more of a coincidental situation, but I don’t doubt he’s had other inventions mess up with even worse consequences.
Lewis’ adoption ultimately is a result of finding a family who understand him. Bud is a teacher, Lucille is a scientist herself, they’re gonna be more understanding and appreciative than your average family who more than likely isn’t interested with another invention possibly going wrong. That success helped put him on the right track, but I wouldn’t say it was the catalyst for his adoption.

Speaking as an adopted person? I _love_ that Disney did that, making him end up _not caring_ about seeing his biomom. Speaking from experience, when you're adopted and you're happy where you are (or in his case where he WILL be, seeing his future like that), you don't care about where or _who_ you came from anymore, or why. Those nebulous people aren't important - because they _really_ aren't.
The people who matter are the people who love you, period.

It's interesting how they look at failure throughout the movie.
Lewis fixates at first to the point of believing success is impossible. Goob chooses to fixate on a single failure, ignore future opportunities and then shift the blame for that to Lewis, and Wilbur almost seems to ignore his mistakes and thus what he could learn from them. Moving forward without taking along any gainful knowledge.
By the end they all have the chance to keep moving forward, missteps and all.

I think an amazing thing about this movie is that as a kid you don’t truly understand the message, but as you grow older you begin to see it clearer and clearer as life goes on. As a kid, I remember liking this movie solely on the concept of time travel and the action scenes but now as a young adult (19 at the time of posting this) I love this movie because there are many takeaways, not just one. Not only does it teach you to keep moving forward, but it shows you the importance of growing up, the importance of family, and the importance of having a positive outlook on your future even if the present isn’t the best. This movie hits home for me in more ways than one and never fails to make me tear up now. Easily in my top 5 favorite Disney movies ever made, and it still disappoints me how underrated it is. It deserves more recognition.

My god... the last song and scenes always makes me ugly cry. This movie is super beautiful and special, and I like how Lewis had to pay for the lack of empathy he was having for his friend, who was actually supportive of him from the start, while Lewis didn't bother to even pay attention to his sports talk. Everything could've been avoided if he was more empathetic to Goob from the get-go, and he had to learn it the hard way, but it was wholesome to see him trying to make the Robinsons adopt him too.
I blame this movie for my desire to adopt a child someday, and live a happy life with them, as happy as we can make it. It's sad that it's so underrated.

I've always loved the little easter egg in the future where they show the Space Mountain ride from the Disney parks, which is usually located in each park's "Tomorrowland", but instead called it "Todayland". THAT was a cute little nod.
Fun fact: This was almost like a love letter to the Disney brand itself because this was during the time that the company wasn't sure of the fate of its movie-division, especially with Pixar doing so amazing at the time that they pretty much relied on them. After a few 'underperforming' 2D movies and their 3D ventures not working out, they weren't sure how many more films the Walt Disney Pictures division would create. While this one didn't do tooooo well (despite how awesome it is), it wasn't long after that they hit their 'stride' again and their movies started becoming profitable again.
