      Piano Man is a MASTERPIECE. 😍😍😍

  • @jamesmoyner7499
    @jamesmoyner7499 Před 2 lety +124

    Okay so first and foremost this is a modernized adaptation of the Charles Dickens story Oliver Twist about an orphan boy who sets out for London to seek his fortune and meets Fagin an old man who has a group of Children pick pockets including the main one named Dodger and for a human version of this story I would recommend the musical film version from 1968,
    The opening song is sung by Huey Lewis who did the two songs for Back to the Future and the song was written by Howard Ashman who would work with Alan Menken on Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin before Ashman’s his death from Aids,
    Billy Joel absolutely loves his city of New York and besides voicing Dodger also wrote the song Why Should I Worry and was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Song, if for some reason you don’t know who he is he wrote and sang songs such as Piano Man, New York State of Mind, The Longest Time, Big Shot, etc,
    Bette Midler who voices Georgette is more familiar with live action Disney audiences as Winifred in Hocus Pocus and when you see the pictures of dogs she has one of them is supposed to be Scooby Doo on the far right even though he isn’t a Disney character,
    Cheech Marin is the voice of Tito and was the hyena Bonzai in The Lion King,
    Dom Delouse has been in a couple of films you have watched so far as Jeremy in Secret of NIMH and Tiger in An American Tail,
    Similar to 101 Dalmatians there is a few animal cameos in this film with Pongo from Dalmatians appearing as well as several from Lady and the Tramp all during Why Should I Worry,
    It never made sense to me what Tito was doing in the car with Dodger until I watched along with you and realized they were going to steal the car radio which is why he was cutting the wires so then they could give it to Fagin and he could sell it for money and when Dodger said “work the crowds” while Everyone was focused on Francis in the middle of the road they were going to take the wallets from the people. They don’t make that scene very well explained, but it adds up for me now especially knowing they were scoping out a fancy car to take from,
    Also in regards to Return to Oz just know it is going to be much much darker the classic with Judy Garland as the books are rather dark so the film matches that tone and just a heads up there is no songs in it,

      @vixiestarfire Před 2 lety +1

      I also recommend Oliver!, the musical version of Oliver Twist. It’s extremely long though, like Sound of Music long. It’s so long it has a real time intermission that was never cut out for the video release

    • @forestcatkay14
      @forestcatkay14 Před 2 lety +2

      Don’t forget though the musical is more true to the book than the Disney version. I was going to recommend read the book but, well I’m taking a class on the works of Charles Dickens and we also talk about the Victorian Era. And that era is pretty bleak and depressing I don’t think Nick’s sweet heart could handle it. Especially as Fagin and Sikes, and several more members die. I’m glad they didn’t have a Nancy in this film though I think Rita may be Nancy.

    • @HobGungan
      @HobGungan Před 2 lety +2

      @@forestcatkay14 Plus the fact that in the book Fagin is simply referred to as "The Jew" through 90% of the thing could make first-time readers uncomdortable if not prepared.
      **(As a Jew myself, I actually love Fagin as a character in most incarnations and I fully acknowledge that Charles Dickens did later speak out against anti-semetism and if memory serves apologized for any damage his careless writing in Oliver Twist may have caused, but it's still very jarring)**

      Of course the 68 film is more accurate than the Disney version that is a no brainer. Though either you haven’t seen it or are mixing thing up with the book as Fagin does not die and is very likable in the film so much so Ron Moody was nominated for Best Actor at the Oscars.

    - The last animated Disney movie to use line overlay, also called cel overlay, a technique used to make the backgrounds on xerography pics. Afterwhich Disney transitioned to "CAPS" digital ink and paint.

    Great choice!
    The story itself is a retelling of the story of "Oliver Twist"(Charles Dickens), down to the names. Though the story of Dickens tale itself is a great deal darker, so I can understand them Disneyfying it.
    Tito is voiced by Cheech Marin(who you definitely would know as Banzai, the second of the three hyena's in "Lion King").
    Georgette is voiced by Bette Middler(Winnie from "Hocus Pocus"). I actually had the pleasure of working with her on a movie set a year or two back. :)
    A heartwarming note about Fagin, while he owes so much money to Sikes, he clearly got the bones for the dogs in his first scene.

    I've always resonated with this film's opening sequence, especially after taking in our cat who we found as a baby in our yard. It's been over a year, and she's made an impact on me for the best.
    (side note; you can really tell how much Di$ney has changed since 1988...from brutally killing off villain-owned Dobermans to demonizing Dalmatians in their "make the villain sympathetic AU backstory movie backstory")

    Interesting story, this movie came out in 1988, but for some reason, Disney chose to not release it on VHS. As a kid, I remember having the VHS of Cinderella, (This was early 90s) and it had a preview of Oliver in theaters, featuring why should I worry. I remember loving the song, and wanting to see the movie, but it never came out. Then in 1996, my mom worked at a movie theatre, and Disney did a big promotion where in the first 4 months of the year, they would release a new movie. January was Muppet Treasure Island, February was Homeward Bound 2, and April was James And The Giant Peach, March was Olifver, and I was so excited to finally see it!

None of us knew that he was sick until it was a month before he passed. There’s something special about orange tabby cats that gets looked over. Back then the villains are even more menacing and sinister compared to today’s Disney villains I feel like they toned them down since then, maybe except for some imo,
    I honestly haven’t watched a lot of live action Disney films, I haven’t seen Pete’s dragon(1977 version) until last year and I know how much of a classic that is.

      I actually think the Twist Villains on the 2010s were each smd every one well-done and fit their movies perfectly. The only problem with them was that there were about four or five of them in a row without any classic Bad-As-I-Wanna-Be villains inbetween to break it up so people got fatigued and started looking for twists.
