  • I was visiting friends in Virginia, but had a small bit of business in southern Delaware to do one day, and used my regular route for that, driving to Norfolk and then taking the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel across. Late in the afternoon/early evening, I returned while it was quite dark.
If you would like to see a similar northbound crossing, you can watch another video I made almost exactly three years earlier, "A November Bridge Odyssey, Part 2"; in that video, the bridge was enveloped in fog, to the "look" of the video is substantially different.

Hi, I have been one of your faithful followers. I really enjoyed this trip. You were right. The other time you filmed this bridge crossing, it was so foggy and rainy. Thank you for sharing.

Nice!!! Thanks for sharing this!! My son and I look forward to crossing that bridge every year when we go on vacation. Such great memories of the area are triggered by this. That bridge signifies the beginning of great vacations and unfortunately the end of great ones as we head back to CT

We lived in Alexandria,VA and headed up a group of trikers and bikers. We did ONCE AROUND THE BAY 10 years ago. We had about 20 trikes and about 10 bikes and a van with a trailer with supplies and personal equipment .
We spent 3 days doing the trip in July 4th weekend.
Hotter than the hinges of hell. We had 1 break down in the 1st 20 miles on one of the trikes. All of the trikes were VW HD . there was a couple store bought trikes. It was incredible 602 miles. We camped out both night and loved it.
My darling Debbie and I have retired and moved back home to Upstate, NY. God we miss those day

Maggieandmissypugs, did your route use the bridge-tunnel, or perhaps a ferry crossing? If you were on actual bicycles and tricycles, I doubt you would have been allowed on the bridge, but since you mention "VW" I assume you were on motorcycles (it seems true that motorcyclists like to use the terns 'bike' and 'trike', although to everyone else those terms belong to the pedal powered machines).

I've been through 4-5 times now [never in the dark]. I stayed in Hampton VA for a week - overlooking the bridge/tunnel. They were still finishing it up [mostly the cosmetic stuff] at the time. I always preferred US Hwys 17 and 13 - rather than get anywhere near I-95. Only in southern New England was I able to tolerate small patches of I-95 - mostly bridges.

I crossed that thing about 3 times in one evening trying to get off at Virginia Beach but every time my exit was coming up I couldn't get in the exit lane because of the traffic. I finally wound up getting off in Portsmouth and called the friend I was attempting to visit to come to where I was and drive me the rest of the way, lol. There wasn't a toll back then, but that was about 25 years ago.

But how, the highway ends in VB, there is no exit it just becomes Independence

@@KGVB757 At that time there was a big loop. I didn't turn around, I went around that loop 3 times and each time I went I went through a tunnel and you could tell it was underwater cause the thing was leaking, lol.

I HATE bridges.. terrible fear. Growing up i would just lay down in the back of the station wagon when we crossed this bridge. But once i had kids i had to Mom up and drive it, shaking the whole time. I was so scared to get trapped in the tunnel..stop laughing 😂
