- We’re back at the St David’s Hotel in Cardiff Bay. We last stayed there over 15 years ago and it wasn’t so good but what is it like now under its latest carnation as the IHG Voco St Davids Hotel
This landmark 5-star hotel in Cardiff first opened in 1999 as part of the Roco Forte group. It has changed management over the years and since 2018 it has been operated under the IHG Voco brand.
We are still impressed by the St David’s Hotel lobby, it’s like a sci-fi prison!
Mel is an IHG member and booked a very good Sunday night rate including breakfast (our own money, NOT sponsored in any way).
As she was an IHG member we were upgraded to a corner room on the top floor with great views over Cardiff Bay.

Lovely room and views. We stayed there once and had views over the other side. The hotel is looks like it could do with a makeover from outside.
Agree, it needs a bit of a makeover but the service we had was excellent.

Got a good deal on a suite for a couple of nights between Christmas and New Year, huge! Absolutely dead in the spa as well at that time of year. And a tree in the room 🎄
You can get good deals if you look around. Apart from being quiet, what was the spa like?
@@flydriveexplore I came to a very similar conclusion to you! A bit tired but fundamentally OK. Clean and tidy and functioning but needs a face lift like the rest of the place as it’s about 25 years old now? Sauna, jacuzzis and a decent pool. Best part is always the lack of people! Enjoyed your vid.

Yes we are. But we are waiting for the 24 hour testing to stop and the price of flights are ridiculous at the moment. Thinking end of August / September time.
All very nice. But I think I would feel a twinge of disappointment if I discovered a posh chocolate on my pillow rather than a Jumbo Sausage.

It looks miserable as hell there.

The day you filmed this I was on the beach and it was 23c 🌞.
It's not always like that in Feb tho.
Sometimes it's 16c. 😅

Thought the meal was small and expensive.
If I tell you a packet of 20 cigs are 1.25(I don't smoke but it's a good yard stick) and my electric bill for Feb was 25 quid (I don't have gas) water bill was 5 quid for Feb.
I think you'll know why I said what I did about the food.
We're Welsh, we're used to wet and windy weather (and sheep). We don't know what to do when the sun's out and we have blue skies.

But seriously I am paying about 240 quid a mth for a modern apt. Fully furnished. It's got a balcony. It's design is similar to what St. David's Hotel is. It's only seven years old. Five minutes walk from the sea.
To the left of your prime location view; are lots of old dock cranes. 😉

Torchwood filmed there?
Yes - the Torchwood base was set under Roald Dahl Plass (where Marcus and Mel stood in front of the bridge in this video).
We will be doing a walk around the bay sometime in the Spring and showing a bit more of the area and it's Torchwood connection. Ianto's shrine is still there!

@@anewbeginningorisit3755 I grew up there, I’m surprised you haven’t heard of it’s famous reputation for incorrigible delinquents and petty crime. Aside from that’s it’s not to bad.
The Hotel is very overrated.
