- Salvatore "Sam" Anello, the Indiana man accused of negligent homicide in the death of granddaughter Chloe Wiegand, said what happens in the criminal investigation is not important because “the worst thing” has already happened. In an exclusive interview with CBS News correspondent David Begnaud, Anello spoke for the first time about the moment 18-month-old fell from his grasp out of a cruise ship window in Puerto Rico.

Also, surely irrespective of whether colour-blindness is an issue or not, even if you are unable to see a particular
colour, or to see it well - you still perceive it as a ‘shade’ when it’s next to clear glass or no glass at all in a sliding window frame. If you watch a colour movie on an old black and white tv, you can still see the movie - just in shades of grey instead of colour. If I accidentally dropped my kid off a cruise ship the last thing I would want to do is be interviewed on TV.
Unless of course you wanted to try your case in the media. This way, those who have never been on a ship might actually believe you thought there was glass there. This way, when you call it a "children's play area" parents (who have also never been on this ship) get up in arms. Then, when you want to sue the cruise line for your own mistakes, people might be more sympathetic.
They want money
Luck you, you haven't dont judge him
He's holding himself accountable. If he didn't do this people would claim he did it on purpose. I commend him for this interview

No doubt.
Same man I couldn’t live or sleep at bight
But they're not tortured they're just trying to get money
That's what is happening to him. He is probably torturing himself everyday. If he's color-blind. then yeah that's why he couldn't tell the window was open.

I can't imagine how her daddy and mother are dealing with this. Our baby is gone forever because of grandpa's carelessness. R.I.P. little one.
So tragic. Horrible.
I saw the cruise ship video a few days ago. This death was no accident. And the grandfather clearly knew what the window was all about. You can see him walking over to the window and looking out of it, right before lifting his granddaughter up, toward the window. He needs to go to prison for deliberately harming this child.
Where is the video
@@yaurelis15 WTHR surveillance video. It's low quality but you see him leaning out and clearly knowing there's no glass there since he's sticking his head out and all. Then picking up the baby, holding her over the same way and just dropping her out of view.
I believe he murdered that child to sue for money. I won't be surprised if the parents are on it too.
This was no accident, this was for money.
You could see he entered the room and was contemplating the plan. He went, looked out the window 1st, Annalised it, and then went ahead.
How can he put his head out of the glass for 8 seconds, come back, and then think it was magically closed. Also, the glasses are tinted, but he now says he's color blind.
They want money. And that child was the paycheck, in their sick minds.
@@thinishot I don't trust the parents either. i cannot form a hypothesis on what I think gramps might or might not be ok with without a little more info from your analogy. Does the difference in size and weight stay the same between factual event fallen/dropper and in the analogy presented? Do other concepts transfer over as well? IE the toddler (RIP) did not understand the potential danger and had great trust in the holder- would gramps be spared the fear of a potential fall by trust in his holder as well? I ask in seriousness because I read your question and two pictures flashed in my mind- gramps fearing for his life being held over the rail by a socially frustrated beta silverback gorilla that hasn't scored in years and smokes camel straights like a chimney and gramps being held over the rail by his somehow alive and 18ft tall grandpa blind with trust and awe. He stopped and turned those tears off very quick...idk something is just not right at all about this story. They wanted it to look like a accident. All the windows on the ship were closed except for that 1 row he was in? And why would he lean over to check and knock on it? I mean yeah could have been for safety, but whu wouldnt he have done that before he picked her up if he was planning on holding her over the rail? He could have checked first but he didnt?..he had her and acted like he was checking and then she "slipped" and fell. No way its bs.
So whats your point? Youre alleging he intentionally dropped her? Make it make sense
@@TheDonshaz they killed her for life insurance
@@Anthony.and.Bigsis Exactly! Those are my same thoughts.
I think he knew there wasn't glass and i guess he did "accidentally" dropped her. He shouldn't blame the cruise ship or him being colorblind as an excuse. It's his fault at the end of the day.
In a video it shows him sticking out his head and shoulders of a window. Then he picks her up and literally holds her (entire body) out of the window like he was passing her on to someone.
Literally no one disagree that it wasnt he’s fault, because it is his fault. We all also agree that it was an accident. But what they are debating are, how responsibile is he for her death. negligent, ignorance, on purpose, etc.
Of course it's his fault. That's not the argument, we all know he did it. The argument is whether he intentionally did it or if it was accidental. My dog is colorblind and has run through a back door he though was open and hit the glass multiple times, it's not totally unbelievable.
If you watch the actual video, you can see him stick his head out the window then lift her out and right out the window with one arm. Looks extremely suspicious i dont think it was an accident
I felt like he did it intentionally. If he couldn't reach the window, why would he let go of the girl. Even a color blind person can feel the breeze. He stuck his head out for several seconds.

The parents are suing the cruise line because that was part of the collective plan by the family.
Other People: “The windows are tinted.”
Him: “I am colorblind. So, that’s something.”
Me: “B*tch, what kind of defense is that? I’m color blind too and I can attest that you can still see shade differentiation for two different colors of something. I couldn’t tell you want the colors are, but I can see a difference in the shading. Like, if you put a blue m&m in front of me and a red m&m in front of me, I couldn’t tell you which is blue and which is red, but I know they’re two different shades because light reflects off them differently creating a different shading tone for each. F*ck this guy.”
Also, I hate the defense that there should have been warning signs, it’s the cruise line’s fault and they need to fix it. Do all cliffs and bridges need warning signs too? If someone jumps off a bridge and dies, can the family sue the city/town because there wasn’t a warning sign stating that could be the outcome then. What happened to common sense and taking accountability for your own actions? It shouldn’t be on the cruise ship to think of ever possible action a passenger might make and make warning signs telling them not to do it when it could result in injury or death. People should have to think for themselves about the risks that could be involved and act accordingly.
Right? This dude doesn't know what colorblind means

Grandpa can't get away with no responsibility taken, that is setting a bad example to our future generation. People cannot just get away with mistakes, because people have to take responsibility. If we do nothing, then that is just bad conditioning, almost like spoiling kids.
hamachikama no. It’s just a simple mistake. Why wasn’t there a sign or cover up? Guy is an old man, he meant no harm. Y’all know this. That lil girl is not coming back. Stop villainizing him.
I can’t understand how people don’t own up and take full responsibility for their actions! If a tragedy happened in my hands I would feel so guilty that I would accept consequences!!
it's a boomer thing
He is the definition of a ret##d
whose to blame , he is, no on else, , he appears to be blaming anyone but himself. He seems to be able to turn the waterworks on and off on cue.

But look again. There is no water works there's works but no water no tears at all
being on camera can be tough & around people in general to show emotion sometimes can be awkward for some..when my cousin died & I went to his funeral I couldn't cry because of everyone around..it wasn't until I was alone could I actually cry..I've got really bad social anxiety ..especially when this happened I was only 20...I'm better with it now but I still have trouble showing emotions in front of strangers its just awkward for me
He’s putting on a great act. Wow. 🤦🏾♂️
This is what really pisses me off. He doesn’t acknowledge his fault at all. I might have some sympathy if he did. I see people do stupid stuff like this every day from people jumping railings at the zoo to driving the wrong way on a road. People act like life isn’t precious and should be protected.
Anyone that has been on a cruise ship knows that you can tell when there is a window open or not 🤷🏻you can smell, taste & hear the difference.
I cant imagine living the rest of my life with the guilt he must be feeling.
What does having half of your torso out the window have anything to do with color blind??!
This!!!
Seen the security video and he leaned out the window before he picked up Chloe then held her outside for 25 seconds before losing his grip on her. He HAD to KNOW the window was open because he leaned out of it first!! Don’t blame the cruise lines for your personal idiocy!!
Hear what he says. As fellow color blind windows are hard to see well.
@@davidquezada50 feeling a breeze or fresh air on your face will make a person realize the window is open. he knew it was open. He just needs to admit it to himself
@@davidquezada50 if he’s color blind he shouldn’t be picking a child up let alone out a window
HE KILLED HER PURPOSEFULLY TO MAKE OUT OF IT MONEY! HE LEANED OUT, TOOK HER QUICKLY OUT OF WINDOW, HANGING HER WITH ONE HAND OUT OF WINDOW TO AVOID ATTENTION OF SURR. PEOPLE, THEN DROPS HER. I DO NOT EXCLUDE THAT THE WHOLE FAMILY IS INVOLVED IN THIS SWINDLER AFFAIR. THEY IMMED. FOUND A LIYING ATTORNEY TO TELL THE FAIRY TAILS! THE MOTHER WAS NOT EVEN ON ABOARD, WAS SHE?!
People literally aren't that careless with their phones. The fact that this guy is grieving or "thought" The window was closed doesn't make him less responsible.
Exactly. :)
Ppl would cry more if they dropped their new iPhone than he did his granddaughter
It was a terrible accident. What would possibly be the reason this grandfather would deliberately drop his tiny grand daughter off this cruise ship? As painful as it is, it was a careless accident and I pray for healing in the heart of the grandfather and the entire family.
Wouldnt you like to know that there was a new surveillance footage that was shown of him leaning out the railing, the same one he later hung the little girl on and then just suddenly lost his balance and then said "Oh, so she could tap on the glass"? Please- he did this on purpose.
@@kessoslife3021 Show me the footage.
@@gjm2669 czcams.com/video/IaPnhlQCkOg/video.html
What do you have to say now huh?
@@kessoslife3021 I’ve seen this video. It still doesn’t prove he did it on purpose. It was an accident. What would be the motive for the grandfather to purposely drop his little granddaughter into the sea? He did NOT do it on purpose.
@@gjm2669 Ok its an accident but he couldn't use his common sense to know that it wouldnt be smart to hang a baby over a railing that was open? It's not even smart to hang your phone over a railing. Make it make sense. It was not an accident, you just wanna talk.
I truly don’t believe he did it on purpose, he literally dropped her on accident, but what insane person holds a baby, toddler, person, dog, cat, whatever, over a damn railing?!!!!
I can’t figure how this would possibly be the cruise line’s fault.
It's not.
Because blaming the cruise liner is the only way for him to avoid being liable. Unlike some other commenters I don't believe this was intentional, but it is certainly involuntary manslaughter at the very least, and possibly child endangerment and/or criminal negligence.
Blame shifting is what people with low integrity do.
Cruise ships or whatever are not blamable for lack of COMMON SENSE.. which a lot of people obviously lack.
I'm not buying his story not a single tear drop.
4:44 much?
Shiiit,i didnt even see one tear drop.
That was definitely negligence on the grandfather's part it might have been an accident but he's responsible R.I.P baby girl
Exactly what I noticed.
He's Guilty af there's a new video that shows he knew window was open.
He should be in prison evil 👿
HOW CAN YOU BLAME THIS GRANDFATHER? his living with this is enough punishment, my goodness. Court case, how ridiculous.
Lmao everyone knows he’s guilty
They want to blame cruise ship for open window, but the fact he had to pick her up, which means that it was unreachable by children.
And then he let go of one arm, to rap on the window; so she was just being held by one arm. Why would he rap on the window? The poor man. But clearly, he was incredibly negligent.
@@patricias5122 not poor man, can you imagine how much breeze was coming though that open window, way up there?
@@patricias5122 -Because at hockey games she would stand by the glass shield and they would rap on it with their fingers. He attempted the same thing there but by the time he realized there was no glass she fell forward.
It wouldn't have mattered if there sign was there or not because most people don't read signs anyway and will break the rules. You just can't fix the stupidity of some people. Common sense is not so common to everybody... R.I.H little angel👼
4:42 not saying he dropped her on purpose, but that sure is a significant and transient display of emotion to not have any tears. You may also notice as I did that after that display of emotion, he goes from devastated bawling to 100% fine in 0.25 seconds, and that ALONE raises massive red flags.
Something is off and weird about this grammpy
HH 4Lyfe He seems heavily distraught tbh. If he was “normal” I would be concerned.
Maybe it has something to do with the fact that he caused his granddaughter’s death
Probably traumatized 🤷♀️

I’m 27 with two daughters. No matter what age I was at, I had more common sense than this guy. He’s blaming everyone except the obvious idiot here, himself. He sounds more and more guilty in every interview.

Security camera proves he is lying lying lying. He leans out the window!!! NO GLASS there. Then he picks her up with two hands, and holds her out the window with ONE hand (his left hand). He did NOT have her in a bear hug.
So sorry for your pain you must be feeling it's crazy how something so innocent can lead to something so tragic god be with you hopefully you get the help you need to combat your inner self.
Alot of people are punishing him but really he's punishing himself. He will live with that for the rest of his life.
Maybe he shouldn’t have tried to blame the cruise ship for HIS MISTAKE.
He composes himself from his tears so fast everytime
Lee Christine uncommitted actor
I didn’t see tears.
Lee Christine camera are stopping so he is probably crying but it’s edited out
Thats not fair since the interview and interviews like this are highly edited for time. Look at 4:56 and wait for the jump cut. This is why long form, unedited interviews are the most accurate representation of people.
It's edited people. Come on 🤦♀️.
There was no need to lift the little girl up she could see through the bottom glass, he is such a liar.
Who in their right mind would hold a 18 month child outside of an open window, well spending that time in prison he will reflect what a stupid mistake he made, I wonder what the family is thinking about their Grandfather now, will they forgive him or not, I just don't know, if I was the father of my child that was carelessly dropped I would never forgive him and will never contact him in prison.
Why even dangle a baby over a damn railing at all! window open or closed . Its careless and sad even if is was an accident . He should not be blaming anyone but himself wow

There’s something wrong here. I don’t know what it is, but there is definitely more to the story. I’ve got a bad feeling about this one.
Allison Anne OMG, I was thinking the same thing! I don’t know WHAT THAT IS, or WHO THAT IS, but something about this whole story is not making sense and when it doesn’t make “Sense” (In MOST cases) that means what we’re being told is not altogether true. Poor man. Poor man, I'm so sorry.
Wouldn't be able to even look at this man again if i were a member of Chloes family. Completely inexcusable and reckless behaviour towards that babies life when you were the one that had full responsibility. Tragic negligence.
This is a very tragic incident. The child didn't merely walk, run, or playfully crawl to an open window within her reach. She was lifted beyond a child's reach and placed there by her grandfather. The window, whether opened or closed, was beyond the reach of the child.
THIS was no accident
