  • Earlier this year, the negotiations were underway for the Compact of Free Association. Every 20 years, the Freely Associated States and the USA renegotiate and rehash the compact that has given Micronesians unrestricted access to the USA, full access to the Micronesian air and waters for the USA and among other things, the ability for our Micronesian citizens to join the U.S. Armed Forces.
One thing that has been overlooked has been Veterans Administration access for our Micronesian Veterans. After the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, many Veterans need care after their service. But doing so, will require them to stay close to a Veterans Administration Medical Center. There are none in Micronesia, so we have to fly on our bill to Hawaii or Guam and spend money on lodging to get seen. It's very costly.
As more and more Micronesians enter the service, there will be more and more Veterans coming out. Acting now to provide service to these Veterans is a must. It's not just a good idea. It needs to be done.
Sadly, nothing has been done. We will continue to wait and expect some traction on this from our leaders and diplomats.
