  • Update: I do not recommend this device. It has a voltage spike when turned on and some other problems.
    --------
I bought this after watching Julian Ilet's video: • Cute LCD Buck/Boost wi...
Overall, it's a decent boost/buck, but does have some shortcomings.
Mainly a bit concerned about the initial voltage/current surge when the output is turned. If you could set the limits on voltage and current when off, it would make for a handy small bench scale power supply.
To be fair, FNIRSI does not advertise this unit as a power supply.

Please note that despite the description, I don’t consider that this device has over voltage protection. In professional systems, over voltage protection normally means a separate independent detection / sensing system that switches the unit off or otherwise disables the unit (possibly by clamping the output) if an over voltage condition is detected. By independent, I mean not part of the normal voltage feedback regulation system.
The voltage spike at switch on is almost certainly due one or more of the following reasons: Maybe the speed of the DC-DC converter to transfer power is significantly faster than the time the voltage feedback regulation system takes to adjust the output power. It could be due to a capacitor in part of the feedback/control circuit taking time to charge up, or just poor design. Or it maybe that the original design had a ‘soft start’ system (so that the output voltage ramps up more slowly rather than rapidly) and then this feature was removed without further consideration of any unintended impact.
However, considering the relatively low cost, this inexpensive unit is fine for loads that are tolerant of these limitations.

After a bit more usage, and response from FNIRSI on the surge, I don't think its a safe device for projects. They said that you can turn it on with your device not connected, then connect to avoid the surge, that's not a solution.

Hello. Thank you for the video, very informative.I can ask you a few questions.I want to purchase this module, but there are no Russian-language reviews, when translating comments, not everything is correct and accessible in understanding - online translator distorts a lot of things. Can I use this module to charge Li-ion batteries,to power some of my devices within the available characteristics. What would you recommend for cooling this module(whether the regular fan copes or something can be modified yourself), what are the cons and pros. And in fact, is it worth buying this device or looking at a better one than this. Thanks.

No, do not buy this device. It surges power when turned on && It is not meant for recharging Liion, it will probably overcharge them.

      Спасибо.

Could have been even better if you explained the step up feature.

Yeah, I'm still using it for step-down, but really can't recommend it due to the power surge when switching it on...
