  • In this video we’ll compare the performance difference between two laptops running an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 and 970M. The 1050 is newer but from the lower end of the 10 series lineup, is the older 970M still worth considering in a laptop? We’ll perform some gaming benchmarks and see how well each graphics card does in a series of tests to help you choose between the 1050 and 970M for your next laptop, or help you decide if upgrading from the 970M to the 1050 is worth it.

    Another Great review Jarrod! I settled on a acer nitro v15 black edition 2017 model, has a 1060 6gb and a i7 7700hq, I added 8gb more ram so it has 16gb now I also put my samsung 850 evo 2.5" inside of it and it already had a 256gb intel m.2. It's the first time i've ever used a fingerprint scanner on a laptop and it's beautiful! THe dolby Audio is a huge upgrade in terms of sound quality from a phone or a old"ish" amp. 1,119 aud alogether including the ram upgrade.

    Interesting, thanks. I have the 970m and im looking at an upgrade when the newer models come out, but I just assumed all the 10 series would be better than the 9 series. That just doesnt make sense to buy a 1050 at all when you can get an older one for probably cheaper that performs better.

    I would love to know how these laptops perform when on a laptop cooling stand. I wonder if there is perceptible difference.

    • @JarrodsTech
      @JarrodsTech  Před 6 lety +1

      I've been planning on buying a bunch of cooling pads and comparing them, and then possibly including the results of using one in the temperature benchmarks in my laptop review videos, just haven't had time to get around to it yet.

    • @PurushNahiMahaPurush
      @PurushNahiMahaPurush Před 5 lety +1

      Coming from a 1060 laptop owner, the performance would be more consistent since CPU will not thermal throttle often. Despite having a good cooling solution, CPUs can go upto 90C on extreme loads. Having a cooling pad will reduce the temps by around 5C so more consistent performance. But I would recommend undervolting the CPU. There are two kinds of throttling: Power and thermal. While cooling pad will most likely get rid of thermal throtlling, you CPU will still power throttle on demanding games which means your max clock speeds will go down. Even a basic undervolt will fix this issue and reduce your temps by 10C.
      This is particularly helpful if you have a shared heat pipe between the CPU and GPU. Since the CPU is running cooler than before, your GPU temps will also be lower. In case of separate heat pipes, I have not seen the GPU overheating. My laptop has separate heat pipes and cooling fans and my GPU never goes above 80-82C in max load.

  • @_________9996
    @_________9996 Před 5 lety

    In future comparisons like this it would be really nice to see average CPU+GPU frequency to rule out throttling etc

    • @JarrodsTech
      @JarrodsTech  Před 5 lety +1

      In more recent comparisons, I just test with 3 different laptops with each GPU, because throttling these days is a fact of life, so it's good to showcase a range of real data rather than best case.

    • @kingstonharan6800
      @kingstonharan6800 Před 3 lety

      You can't replace GPU on laptops... Only few laptop models can replace graphics cards. Eg- Alienware, HP few models. And those laptop graphics cards care pretty expensive. You can buy a new gaming laptop for that price or you can assemble a pc with high end performance.

    Im likin this chanel, not many do laptop graphics comparisons, could you also include thermal readings of the surface temps ? Cause thats very important with laptops , i actualy went from 970m to 1050 because of the heat

    • @JarrodsTech
      @JarrodsTech  Před 6 lety +1

      I use my thermal camera to test this in the full review videos, however it's not something I felt would have been too useful here, as both laptops were from different companies and had different cooling solutions I didn't think that it would be fair to compare the heat unless they were otherwise the same model, as the other differences between them will contribute to temp differences as well so I can't be sure how much is due to the GPU differences. If I'm able to get the same model laptops but with different hardware then yeah I'll look at including this too.

I know how each one compared against the 1060 6gb notebook but I do wonder how they will pair up against each other as I'd expect 2 different fights in the low (less vram demaning) settings vs the higher (more vram demanding) settings

That's a lot of vram difference. It was a private, out of town sale so is going to be a mission to get a refund. Hmm the 970m is closer to a 1050 Ti, however the 8300H will smash the 6700HQ... Not sure, depends on the game, if you play at higher settings (granted not really something 970M can do in some games) the better GPU would help, otherwise in most cases I'd think the better CPU would be more useful.

    • @JarrodsTech
      @JarrodsTech  Před 5 lety +1

      Better for what? For gaming I'd expect similar performance, maybe a slight edge to the 970m in some games, but that 8300H should dominate the 6700HQ, considering the 8300H is around 10% better than the 7700HQ, which is of course better than the 6700HQ - that's a 2 generation difference there, I'd probably go the 8300H/1050, much more modern.

    Wow I’m surprised, I figured the 1050 would be way better then the 970m. My Alienware 17 I bought a long time ago and at the time was top of the line and came with a gtx980m. I still use it everyday to game on and it still handles any of the new games, like borderlands 3 and control at high setting. Granted I don’t play those online fast paced first person shooters where I hear FPS is important. I’m planning on keeping this older Alienware laptop for around 2 more years. it was a great investment for me and when I do get a new laptop I will probable stick with Alienware. Only problem it ever had was those shitty killer wifi cards and I replaced its with intels and never had a problem since.(knock on wood)

    970m is an excellent videocard for it's time, but I would never buy a laptop with it nowdays. Not only Volta is about to come out really soon, making even Pascal kind of outdated, the 900 series will almost completely come obsolete after that. But what's more important to me personally is the the extra heat the 970m has over 1050 and 1050 ti. Not to mention that that 1000 series is more efficient by itself, it can also be undervolted, while the 900 series ones can't be. Nvidia only allowed undervolting since 1000 series videocards, just like Intel only allowed it since 4-th gen Intel core series.

    • @JarrodsTech
      @JarrodsTech  Před 6 lety

      Yeah I'd probably wait at this point for the new stuff, unless you can get a really good deal on the 970m or something as it still does alright, if you just play lower end games it would be fine for a while I'd think.

    IMO, when it comes to laptop, 1050 ti for the win. Light chassis, good battery, good temperatures, no throttle and amazing performance at 1080p with some tweaked settings... all a laptop need. Ultra settings is just ego and any gpu stronger than that i'd rather go for a desktop. Pair that with 16gb ddr4 2400mhz dual channel, an i7 7700hq, an ssd m.2 and you'll be set until 2020 easy.

    • @JarrodsTech
      @JarrodsTech  Před 6 lety

    You should have got some thermals. The 970M that I have seen you can grill a cheese sandwich on when gaming. I don't think the 1050 gains any benefit from 4GB ram over 2GB while the 1050ti does benefit slightly.

    • @JarrodsTech
      @JarrodsTech  Před 6 lety

      They would have been invalid, as both laptops had different form factors/cooling solutions.

    • @robertkubrick3738
      @robertkubrick3738 Před 6 lety

      Actually I think it would be valid...because the 970m is not going to be made anymore. Just because the 1050 had a different cooling solution wouldn't invalidate that the 970m in any form you bought is going to be MUCH much hotter. You could have just reported the rating on the power supply bricks and let everyone draw their own conclusions.

      Let's take a moment to think about this. This video is almost a year old, could it be that PUBG has undergone a lot of changes over that time? Could there be newer Nvidia drivers that boost performance? Is it more likely that you have a laptop with 8th gen CPU which beats this older 7th gen model? Could it be that FPS differs greatly between map and depends on what other players are doing at the time? I tested in the same area on both machines for comparable results, I don't care about showing optimal performance, I care about performing the same test run.
