    You do not need to be a professional musician or have a multi-million dollar church budget to get started with in-ear monitoring. In my opinion, in-ear monitoring can help the struggling worship band on a tight budget make drastic improvements to their sound without breaking the bank. Here are three options for building a wireless in-ear monitor system for your church. This guide assumes you already have the basics of a sound system such as loudspeakers for your congregation and at least a 16-channel mixer. In this example, I am going to use the Behringer X32 to demonstrate in-ear monitor setup. This board has dominated the market of affordable digital boards the past few years and is a popular choice for smaller churches on a budget.

    We are looking at in ear monitors for our church, and this is the best explanation of options that I have seen so far. Thank you!

    Thanks to this video and other resources I finally made the move to wireless IEMs. I got the Shure wireless PSM300 system. In the past even a wedge didn't help to overcome congregation singing/clapping (out of sync with the backing track). We used the IEM system this past Sunday and it was near perfect.

    You say most people don't need a stereo mix, but I went from a mono setup to the personal mixer with stereo capability and the difference is night and day. I would hate having to go back to a mono mix in my ears. Great video, though. I really appreciated your breakdown of systems.

    The one thing you missed with the stage mixers is that everyone has a stereo mix and you don't have to use the busses on your mixer to break it down for everyone. We have a combo of stage mixers, wired and wireless setups for our IEMs. Works great.

      Stereo, all day long. But I prefer to call it pannable mono because even if all mics and instruments occupy one channel on the sound board, you can still move those mono signals left and right in your head to separate them so turning up one doesn't mask all the others. The personal digital mixers like the P16M allow the panning without making changes to channels and busses on the board. Wireless IEMs are too expensive for me and something else to go wrong. (we're talking RF wireless not bluetooth which I would never consider)

    We have used the Behringer P1 Power play wired iem. It cost us only $50 each unit and work on the xlr that already comes from the snake. It has been an amazing solution and I think easier than using the headphone amp option.

    You don't mention the Behringer P1's here 🙁
    I watched your videos on IEM and went for the P1's. We only have an analogue system and our snake has 4 Aux😬 ..I have routed lead vocals and lead instruments to Aux1, with some ambiance from a condenser mic in FOH, (and a little bass/backing vocals/instruments to fill as required) and then used a splitter on that output. That goes to L input channel on the P1's then the R channel is routed direct from the instrument (eg from the harp/mandolin guy's mini mixer for his mix, and direct out on the bass DI box). Aux2 goes to R channel in P1 for the backing singers (they share a P1 with a earphone splitter) - they may decide to just have their own mono mix from Aux 2, just using one input on P1, but at the moment they like panning the 2 inputs. The other 2 Aux are left for keys, guitar and lead vocals, which I have to set up. I am doing my best to cope with 4 Aux! And by using P1's I can share a lead mix to all of the P1's L or R channel from 1 Aux is a good workaround!
    Thanks for the videos, they really have helped get my mind working!

      Sennheiser G4, although pricey, the sound quality is top notch. If you have 4 of them, you can use Sennheiser's Antenna Combiner to unify the signals of all the units.

    Hi Jake, this video was super helpful!! Is a similar set up also doable without a mixer? I’m currently running a Behringer UMC1820 interface straight into our DAW for our pre-recorded worship set. We need a total of 6 in ear mixes and the HA8000 you recommend appears to be our solution! I’m not really sure how I would hook both of these units up? First time ever doing this, so any feedback you can provide is highly appreciated. Thanks in Advance!!

    Hi I am the minister of music at my church and I'm looking to set up an in-ear monitoring system that gives us flexibility and control. As of right now we have no need for wireless.
    We already have an X32 board, butwe are looking for the band to have our own dry signal that is not dependent on our A/V team. Ultimately we are looking for a plug-and-play situation for the band that is not affected by our sound guy.
    We are about to purchase
    1. Behringer X32 Rack Digital Mixer
    2. Behringer S16 16-channel Digital Snake
    3. Behringer P16M Personal Mixing System with P16D Distribution Module
    Please let me know if this makes sense, or if there is another option that is better. I appreciate it.

    How would you implement limiters on IEM? As a safety measure for unexpected bang (from mic drops, feedback, equipment power shutdown, etc) in your ear which could potentially damage your hearing for lifetime?

    • @kevinh5983
      @kevinh5983 Před 2 lety

      The personal mixer p16 system has built in limiters on each unit that you configure with a single knob. I believe most wireless units have limiters built in to the transmitter as well. For the wired option he mentions, I think you could use compressors on your bus outputs on the x32 to get some protection as well.

  • @EstebanOrtiz_bajissimo

    Hi Jake... Do you know if the first option works with the Behringer XR18, does that mixer have an App like the one you're talking about?

    • @robertguerrero3301
      @robertguerrero3301 Před 5 lety

      Yes it does. That is our portable retreat setup. XR18 6 auxes feed 6 channels on the headphone app for 6 individual mixes controlled by the X AIR Q app. Works great!!! With the behringer headphone app that Jake shows on one of his videos, you can actually connect 2 wired IEMs per channel if you have more members than mixes(2 people sharing a mix). Hope this Helps!!

    Whats the deference between having it in mono to having it in stereo? And how would stereo be connected?
    Thanks

    • @AaronJCourtney
      @AaronJCourtney Před 5 lety +1

      The difference is like listening to a modern, commercially produced album vs plugging your ears into a 1970's era B&W TV with a mono out and listening to content from that era.
      I consider stereo ears monitoring to be the bare minimum for all musicians. I would never be satisfied monitoring in mono. Why spend $1k+ on custom molds 6, 8, etc drivers just to monitor in mono?! The soundstage collapses, there's no spatial depth. It's just a terrible way to monitor that is entirely uninspiring.

    Currently have a PSM 300, if I use two body packs and one transmitter will I still be able to hear the Metronome on the left and Track on the right? At least that's how I have them right now.

    • @Churchfront
      @Churchfront  Před 6 lety

      No, unfortunately you can only have mono signals when you set them up that way, meaning you would hear the same thing in both ears.

  • @jesusbautista7962

    • @Churchfront
      @Churchfront  Před 6 lety

      Yep! So long as each mono signal has it's own mix, you can still have click and tracks in both.

      Use pre-fader aux outs for your monitor mixes. You may need mono-to-stereo adapters to connect them to the headphone amp or wireless transmitter. I'm in the process of seeing what we can do on a budget to go from wedge monitors to in-ear monitors, so I'm in the same boat as you, it seems.
