    Directed by : Roman Polanski
Produced by : RP Productions, Runteam
    Genre: Fiction - Runtime: 2 h 5 min
    French release: 19/10/2005
    Production year: 2004
In an English Victorian orphanage, Oliver Twist just manages to survive, along with his companions of misfortune. Undernourished, exploited, he’s sent to work in a funeral parlor where, yet again, he’s abused and mistreated. Oliver puts up with it all, but one day he’s pushed too far and flees to London.
Exhausted and starving, he’s picked up by a gang of young thieves who work for old Fagin. With Dodger, Bill, Nancy and the others, Oliver discovers a cruel world where only cunning and strong-arm tactics count.
Arrested for an attempted robbery that he didn’t commit, Oliver doesn’t betray his gang. His behavior is viewed favorably by his intended victim, Mr. Browlow, who becomes his benefactor. But Fagin and Bill soon exercise their power over Oliver and force him to participate in a break-in at Brownlow’s home. Oliver gets caught up in a series of tragic events that reveal the true nature of the people around him and force him to choose what path his life will take.

I think it’s amazing how even though Oliver was alone in the world, he was brave and able to make his way in the world in his own.

I cried when Oliver hugged Fagin. Even though Fagin forced children to rob others Oliver still sees the kindness he has given him like taking him in when he doesn't know where to go. I cried a bit at that part.

One of the finest classics. Still as good a literary piece now as when it was first written and still serves as a haunting reminder of the suffering of the poor in those times.

I listened to this book on tape as a young child, and many of the phrases bring back such memories of me, sitting in my room, the same room I'm sitting in right now, and listening to it, being confused because I was 6 years old! But now, I understand so much more of what is going on, and I just love this novel, especially because London has such a special place in my heart.

I first read Oliver Twist when I was 10 or 12 while I was still learning to read and write English. I would find an English book and just read it. Reading it again now, I’m really surprised that I was able to understand and follow what was going on.

I doubt you read the original. If you were indeed LEARNING English, there's no way you would have understood the original. it was probably a simplified version. I read it when I was fourteen and, while I still understood everything, it was a heavy and difficult book. There's just no way you read the original, especially since you were so young and learning English, bruh there's just no way I won't believe it

rubbish. compared to the novel and the original film of the sixties. it takes all the darkness out of it, and that bil sikes has no terrible presence about him compared to the actor who played him in the sixties. and all the other parts-nancy, and the fagin and the artful dodger are all unmemorable. a poor film. i dont feel like ive been transported to that period in london like say i do in taboo and peaky blinders, and other than london-'versailles.' The music is shit, it contributes to me feeling im not in that time period. to be oliver twist right then, i was really really grim and dark, and what do we have- a pleasant lord of the rings in the shire type soundtrack

@Star There i know there was an earlier black and white version, which was pretty mediocre, barely watchable. the well known colour version of the late sixties is the most beloved and most critically acclaimed adaptation of oliver twist. it is not based on the earlier black and white film. there is no resemblance at all. the colour one, is brilliant.it's absolutely epic, very long, giving oliver twist the same level of epic scale as war and peace. one needs to have more than the short attention span of typical skim readers today to appreciate it. and the songs are beloved, memorable and critically acclaimed. probably the best musical songs of any musical. and normally i hate songs in musicals and skip them all. the choice of casting for oliver, sykes, fagin and nancy were so perfect, that no actors can come any where their performances in the lead roles. i'm afraid you are in the tiny minority in not liking it. however there are those of us who grew up watching it once a year when it was played on television during the christmas week. i was an absolute book worm growing up as a child, small novels i would get through in one day's reading sometimes, maximum two sittings, and long novels like dicken's ones- e.g. 500-800 pages, took three days. and had read all dicken's novels by then, with david copperfield by far my favourite as it was set near to where i grew up so i knew the geographical area. this musical adaptation managed to outshine the book in its imaginative scope, in managing to bring alive that time in victorian london of child poverty and child labour from the perspective of the child's eyes. . very few modern tv period adaptations manage to achieve that historical sense of place. the 'taboo' tv series starring tom hardy managed to portray the same sense but from adult perspective.and a few 19th century whaling tv adaptions achieved the same for life on a ship.

@Star There none of those films are remembered. it is yourself that is talking nonsence and do not know what you are saying, you speak from a solitary opinion, isolated from popular and critical film/theatre opinion. the musical however is critically acclaimed as one of the best musicals ever, this is my last reply on this, because i don't have time nor patience to repeat to state the same well known and undisputed facts, (well until you came along), as though i'm talking to a wall. and i do not make a habit of replying to comments on my comments.
the songs are fondly remembered, and famous, and is THE oliver twist film beloved by audiences. barely anyone remembers the black and white films. they are mere footnote and the sixties epic colour musical blew them into footnotes. . well you remember those former black and white crappy films. at least that's one person. and im not dismissing them for being black and white. i studied a full semester in film studies, covering the history of cinema. and i can tell you that there is reason why the colour musical is award winning and beloved, and the previous ones are forgotten by almost all. yes im making an argument from popularity and from authority of critical acclaim, but that's how film and tv work. they are entertainment, and their place in culture is judged by popular assent and secondly by critical assent. if you wish to be a fan of those earlier adaptations. that's fine. but i grew up reading all dicken's works by the age of fourteen, i knew them intimately. that musical captured oliver twist, the setting of london, the child poverty through oliver's eyes in a way dickens would have been delighted with it. with a truly enormous cast. you are talking nonsense about the musical songs, because they are acclaimed and songs such as ''consider yourself'' are the most famous in film/theatre musical history. oliver twist and mary Poppins remain the standout musicals upon which all others are judged. i'm not going to consider your solitary counter opinion as carrying much weight. nor should anyone. so enjoy your early oliver twist films (alone) if that's what you like. your welcome to them.
