I laughed uncontrollably at the fire immunity. This is great.
:D
As soon as he said he was using fire, I was saying to myself "wait a moment, aren't imps immune to fire?" but of course the DM can cheat any time he wishes. ;)
@@melkiorwiseman5234 But isn't that fine that he attacked the imp with fire? I mean as a player I wouldn't know that and the DM could say something like: "Firebolt hits the imp but soon after you hear an evil laugh while flames slowly disappear into thin air...The creature is left unscathed" Or how else should this conduct?
@@nemanjaukic4261 I think you're talking about meta-gaming? Like the rationale is that the player's character wouldn't know that imps are immune to fire unless he'd experienced that before? But then you have the argument that certain things would be common knowledge, and other things may be known to the character due to previous experience.
Unless imps have almost never invaded the material plane or people have never told tales about those invasions, it's very likely that "imps are immune to fire" would be known to everyone, unless the person comes from a background of both illiteracy and almost total isolation.
My current D&D character comes from a background of studying the demonic (because "know thy enemy") and so it's highly unlikely that he wouldn't know that imps are immune to fire.
@@melkiorwiseman5234 Huh, I guess that would indeed be common knowledge in most cases. So if I were the DM and the player decided to throw a Firebolt at an imp, I would just tell him that his character knows that imps are immune to fire and he should choose another spell. Seems better than just allowing Fire damage.
I was thrown into being a DM for the first time today (despite only playing dnd a handful of times) and quickly realized I knew nothing. The other players didn't mind but these videos are going to SAVE me during our next meet. thank you so much!!!

Harry Potter or Avatar Aang, so its easier for me, cause
I'm familiar with it, its behavior and most importantly its abilities
and powers?
@@slevinchannel7589 You can create any character you wanted to - as long as it follows the in game rules to a degree. For example, a Human variant Wizard could be an analogue for Harry Potter, with spells that do similar things to the spells in D&D. As for Aang, you could create a Way of the Four Elements Monk and take every elemental skill you desire.
@@TheGamingLegendsOfficial there are some really easy ways to make fictional characters, BUT i would argue that harry potter is a sorcerer, not a wizard, because a spellbook is not seen once in any of the books or movies

Hello, Nate! I'd like to thank you a lot for your work. If you remember I asked you a few questions about the starter set adventure about half a year ago, you were kind enough to help and... well now I'm running my own campaign in my own setting and we're having tonnns of fun. I already have great stories to tell: funny and dramatic and epic, and this is only the beginning.
Certainly I've been reading and watching a lot of stuff about DMing, creating interesting NPCs and keeping players hooked. But WASD20 was a true starting point, an introduction, a "verge of endless worlds of adventure". RPGs and D&D in particular are unbelievably beautiful places to step into, but it sure is confusing for most people to discover. Your guidance reveals this old heavy carving door is but a curtain, waiting to let you in.
I hope to see much more from you, your work is apreciated. Good luck to you, be happy and may the dice be with you!
Tony, man. You're gonna make me cry in the comments section - cut it out! :)
But that's awesome, man. Thanks so much for sharing that. Comments like this keep me going and remind me of why this hobby is so great. It's the people, and the stories we can tell together.
I hope your journeys continue to be full of adventure and good times!
Anton Podolnyy very cool!!!!
I donât mean this in a mean way I promise. But this comment gives me âworship the sunâ vibes for some reason
Whenever I obtain a spell, I write the desc on a sheet of paper that I have handy for all of my spell descriptions. It's really convenient to not have to break out the book except when I learn a spell.
Absolutely. Solid idea. I use index cards, a google doc, or now mostly spell cards.
I'm so glad I found these! I played with my older cousins when I was younger. (Like seriously '85) and we didn't have anything super fancy. I was 10 to 12 years old when we all played and it was mostly my cousin telling me what I should do. haha! I played again in HS but it was 4 of us and 2 people just didn't want to keep going. It's so hard to keep groups together. Now I'm 48 and I really want to find a group I could play with!
Wow, thanks man! As a novice DM, I'm already mid adventure with my group and as to now was unsure of how to handle magic and improvised it. Now I know and have to tweak all the PC's... Regardless, you've saved my game!
Great! Thanks for the comment, and happy gaming.
Just a slight correction: You can actually cast any lower level spell at a higher level; specific instructions for casting them at higher levels are not necessary.
Oh, okay. Thanks for pointing that out. It's just that not all spells will have greater effect at a higher level. Makes sense.
@@WASD20 Late to the party but, the DM can always try to home-brew some effects for spells cast at a higher level which don't usually improve when cast higher.
Awesome job doing these tutorials! I learn much better watching an actual game unfold rather than someone just explaining the rules to me. Super appreciative for you making all of these! On to the next episode!

I'm learning so much from these videos. I just picked up the D&D starter set and I'm gonna try to DM my first campaign with some friends but I've only ever played D&D once in a one shot. Thanks! This channel thinks you're pretty swell too.
Been watching all your videos, thanks for all the great content... Incredibly helpful. Me and 6 friends realized on NYE this year that, at the ages of 35-45, none of us had ever played D&D... And when I revealed my hidden passion to become a DM, everyone got on board. It's been incredibly tuff, and a lot of work, but everyone had a blast setting up their character cards together (even though it took a while!), and we're going to attempt our first game on Sunday đ€

So Iâve playing second ed. for 28 years and I actually been running a 5th ed. while on aircraft carrier for last 7 months. I actually never really learned the rules to 5th just leaning on my past experiences and my players who understood the rules. It worked fine. many campaigns were ran and much fun was had on the high seas. Now, Iâm back and Iâm actually going to play in 5th Ed for the first time and this has been super helpful series with getting some of X and O figured out. Great! Thanks for the comment. Happy gaming to you and your friends!
I've gotta leave a comment. You have inspired me so much and helped me tremendously. I have searched the entire web looking for information on D&D , Pathfinder and other RPGs. It is so hard to come by good easy to follow instructions. this is clear and I am actually understanding rather than quitting because I'm so confused. Thank you so much for your time that you've put into your channel. I am actually creating my own RPG (basically D&D + Pathfinder and a little bit of me..;)) because I don't have enough money to buy anything but dice and have nobody to play with but my family. so I am making it have the ability to play solo more easily. Your channel has brightened my month. Thanks again! May you have lucky dice!
Thanks so much for the comment! Made my day. :) Happy gaming!
9:51 Same feeling. xD Always makes me laugh. lol I still make the best of it like you did, because the DM still has the final say on everything. I just figure that he's an unusual imp with some quirks if anyone is saying he is supposed to have fire immunity and we all forgot until the last minute. xD
Yo this stuff is great! Just played my first game yesterday! Wish i saw this earlier!!

These videos will save me
Best spellbook ever is the 5th edition spellbook app (the mint green one with the open brown book, white pages and little red squiggly lines for letters) 4.5 reviews (don't listen to it... I give this 5 stars easy) 4k+ reviews for Samsung (sorry Apple users). If you download this you will never need to buy one of those decks for any character in the game and the app is free and the cards are identical. The other best app that no D&D player should be without IS for Apple (sorry Samsung users) and it is called Fight Club 5 (for 5e). It is pretty much an electronic character sheet, but it is sooo much more than that. If you are a new user, it is brilliant for double checking your numbers and modifiers, it offers counters, you can plug in your back story, character and race and it will auto-fill in your stats for you, so if you are like me and you art instead of math, you don't make mistakes as long as fill in the other stuff right and don't accidentally fill in the same stuff in different areas like I did by accident the first time I tired it. You can upload an image of you character, take as many notes without running out of space, have more than one character going if you are a DM and want to fill in PCs and Monsters, offers a dice roller, helps you with filling in your level ups and even has a place for multi-classing. The learning curve on a scale of 1-5, one being the slowest/hardest to learn and five being zoom through it with ease, I would give it a 4. The ProD&D initiative tracker and other products are nice, but you won't save any money and the ideas in the book are better. The Complete Reference for 5E (Green dragon and a 5). This one is probably one of my top three. I love it. Especially for running campaigns. That's about it for apps. I just wanted to share. Most of us don't have a lot of play money. This has saved me a bundle and it is super easy fast and convenient during in game. Goes very smooth. Have fun with it! Hope this helps. :)
Omg, thank you so much, understand how spells work now
Nate you can actually always cast lower level spells in a higher level spellslot even if it not states "cast at higher levels", in that case the effect just doesn't change

+WASD20 Yes, he is right :) We always miss some minute details that are not always obvious at first glance!

Absolutely! :) I just added a notation to the video to correct it as well.
I've been into dungeons and dragons since I was like 13 years old but grew up in a time where it was almost extinct... Especially in the rural area which I live! So I am now 27 years old I own a few DM guides and Player/Monster guides. Read them all front to back and honestly know most of the rules. But have never been able to DM an actual game or even play a full quest/campaign with others. I have played a few for a couple days and even ran with some over the course of months even years. But honestly never sat down with more than 3 people and played regularly. But finally at almost 30 years old I can play Dungeons and Dragons! This weekend I will be DMing my first game with a set group who has planned to meet once at minimum and sometimes twice if everyone agrees weekly. Over the past few days I have been watching a few of your videos as a sort of "refresher" on the basic rules so I am not too clunky while running the game. Sure I know I won't be the DM wizard of the East Coast or anything. But hey I already know we are in for a great memorable experience and I am more excited for my friends than myself because they are going to be experiencing dungeons and dragons for their first time mostly and I plan on hitting them hard and immersing them so they continue to enjoy it. Here's to hoping! Thanks for the great videos, super glad I stumbled across your channel because it ended up being geared perfectly for a situation just like this. Don't ever feel like what you're doing is being done better by someone else on here... Because everyone who is doing videos of this type could appeal to a different person. Just so happens you appealed to me more than the other channels. Rock on!
Thanks so much, Evan. This whole comment makes me smile, a lot. I'm excited for you. Hope it goes well and feel free to report back! :)
I appreciate the info provided in these videos. I am just returning to playing D&D after a very long time... I first played in the mid to late '80s. I had a pretty massive collection of original edition, 2nd edition and some newer sets and books. I wish now I still had them... I did have a question about the plastic bases and cardboard "NPC's" You used in the videos, where are they from?
I just bought the 5th Edition Starter Set, Essentials Set, Player Handbook, Reincarnated DM Screen, Druid Folio, several sets of Dice. Also bought an assortment of miniatures, and a massive "Skeleton Dragon" plus D&D Logo LED Light for display. I would like to get back into DM'ing after I learn more about all the changes to the game after all these years and Editions.
you are a Genius. will love to play with you.
