  • What type of PhD do you do after you do a MBA and an engineering degree? This was my experience, and it makes you very flexible and valuable in a PhD degree.
What type of PhD in Management can you pursue after you do a MBA and an engineering degree? Here is what I would recommend:
PhD in Finance. You can do a PhD in Finance, as your quantitative skills allow you to do some of the difficult Finance equations.
PhD in Strategy / Strategic Management. I think this is the most common pursuit for people that have done an Engineering degree and an MBA. The reason is that a PhD in Strategy allows you to study innovation and technology management.
PhD in Operations Management. This is also a common degree combination. Many people that do operations, industrial engineering, or process control are attracted to operations careers.
PhD in Marketing. You will also see some people pursue a PhD in Marketing career once they have an engineering degree / MBA background. There is a subfield of Marketing Strategy / New Product Development that seems to fit with this combination.
PhD in Supply Chain Management. You also see some people go into Supply Chain Management or do a PhD in Analytics or Logistics, which are becoming more popular in academia.
PhD in Management Information Systems. I also see people that have an IT background go into MIS, and excel at that career.
PhD in Entrepreneurship or PhD in Engineering Management. Some schools have these as separate options, but you have to look at the school. Most often, a PhD in Entrepreneurship is just a Strategy or Organizational Theory degree. Sometimes, PhDs in Engineering are very similar to PhDs in Management.
What would I recommend for you to pursue? I would recommend that you find the courses that most resonate with you during your MBA or Engineering program. Why don’t you create an Excel spreadsheet of the top 10 courses that you enjoyed, create 3-5 decision criteria, and rank order your options? Pick the best 2-3 options, and investigate those career paths in more detail.

David Maslach is a research professor of entrepreneurship, innovation, and business strategy, I discuss topics, such as behavioral science, strategy, innovation, and entrepreneurship, and apply these to my new peer proofreading and editing platform. Topics include the sharing economy, altruism, investing in technology, starting a business, and bounded rationality. My favorite videos pertain to incentives, goal setting, and learning from failure to drive behaviors such as weight loss, stopping telemarketers, creating novel technologies, and creating new movements.
r3ciprocity.com: Peer proofreading and editing platform
A new platform where you can earn credits by editing other people's documents. Use these credits to have your own work edited. If you do a good enough job, you can convert these credits to money.
The goal of the platform is to get people to 'pay it forward' and help other people out by creating incentives for people to give back.

Thanks for this video. Made me re evaluate my choices in my education. My undergrad is Chemical Engineering, completed MS in Management Engineering, and now I am taking PhD in Management. It was indeed a great shift for me but I am enjoying it so far...Still can't decide a dissertation topic though.

A huge fan of all your videos. The decision making model you explained in the end is a huge help for ppl like me coming from diverse backgrounds and looking forward to bridge those domains in a PhD and feeling clueless about it!
As a result of your model I reached a conclusion about myself : I am communicator/marketer who enjoys strategizing, has a knack for technologies and understands customer needs!
I finally have my intro line now.. just need find that topic??!!!!
I do want to be an educator that is for sure.... yet how .. i am still developing the strategy for that!
